      II'm a newbie. I have a website using the default home page filename: index.htm. I have total control over the web server. I was wondering whether I can get any SEO improvements for my main keyword if I change the default filename with a filename that contains the main keyword, like our-main-product.htm (doing the 301 redirect and changing the server search order, of course)?

          Hey Oscar - my second language is French and I couldn't possibly have asked the question in my other language as well as you have here, so don't worry about the language issue at all!

          For your question about changing the index.htm to something with a keyword: no, that would have absolutely no effect. As long as the redirect was with a 301 code, the search engines and the visitors will never know that page even exists. That's the whole purpose of the 301-redirect. it makes that page invisible to the search engines.

          I would also strongly advise not to switch to a keyword-rich subdomain. that's just asking for a lot of headaches and problems in the future.

          What you are suggesting here is trying to create what is called and Exact Match Domain (EMD), meaning the title of your domain matches the keyword you are trying to rank for. The value of these has recently been lowered by Google anyway, and as I say, doing it using a subdomain will cause all kinds of hassles, not to mention confusion for your users.

          If I were you, the area i would be focusing most of my efforts would be on building and earning links form other websites. At the moment, you essentially only have one other domain linking to you.

          In addition, trying to rank with a very competitive general term like impresión digital will be very difficult for a new site. Better to use terms like impresión digital en Chihuahua and others related to where you offer your services. This is assuming that most of your customers are fairly local, not from all over the Internet.

            I already got rid of the index.htm name appearing in the url homepage, and also I have all the needed 301 redirects for the mydomain.com, mydomain.com.mx and mydomain.mx pointing to www.grafimart.com. Please, take alook at: www.grafimart.com

            What I really want to know is whether I can get some SEO benefit if I change the index.htm main home page filename for my main keyword: impresion-digital.htm, even when it is not to be shown to the users. In other words: Does the google bots consider as a valid keyword the index page name, even when it is not shown?

            http://www.grafimart.com/impresion-digital.htm

            instead of:

            http://www.grafimart.com/index.htm

            I´m thinking on this based on the fact that my domain name is a branded name and I find difficult to get better SEO for my main page using a subdomain like

            (impresion-digital.grafimart.com)

              Google weights most of its SEO 'strength' to the actual domain name iteself - and even then, from left to right i.e the further right your main keyword is, the less juice it will get.

              However, if you have relevant content on the page and name the page accordingly then you are making what is called an 'seo friendly' URL. Many people who use Wordpress for example, change their permalinks to change the url from something like mysite.com/p1 to mysite.com/keyword - which WILL make a difference, albeit not a huge one.
              So if it's straightforward for you to do so, then by all means do it. Outside of SEO it will help your visitors better understand what the page is about, and will look a lot prettier in the SERPs too.

              Also, rather than 301'ing each page, you may be able to change the structure of your permalinks within your .htaccess file so that it will happen automatically e.g by naming the file with the title of your page or postname.

                What you actually want to do is get rid of that index.htm address for your home page altogether, Oscar. You want your visitors to only be able to reach your homepage at one URL. This means you need to use 301 rewrites to make your /index.htm page redirect to your primary domain name. (E.g. the website name with no filename after it.)

                You also want to make sure that you have chosen between www.youdomain.com and yourdomain.com (without the www) as the primary address, and rewritten the other one to point to the primary. This is called canonicalisation of the home page. The search engines see each of those addresses as completely different pages because they have different URLs - even though they display the same page. As a result, they'll be considered duplicate content and will effectively be competing against each other.

                There are many questions here in Q&A that explain how to do these kind of redirects. Let us know if you can't find one that works for you.

                  Does Google avoid indexing pages that include registered trademark signs?

                  I am suspecting that Google often hesitates to index pages that have registered trademarks on them that are marked with a ®.   For example EGOL® used in the title tag or in the tag at the top of the page. Registered trademarks are everywhere and most retail product pages contain at least one of them.  However, most people use the registered trademark names as text in their writing without adding the registered trademark sign of ®. Have you experienced a problem getting such pages indexed or have you read any articles about how Google treats registered trademarks?

                  Getting the Titles and Headings Right on Product Pages. Userbility vs SEO

                  Hey Mozzers, I am optimising a chaotic section of the site including many similar products. Writing unique content etc. The titles and urls were all over the place so my first job was to tidy them up so I could make some sense of the situation, especially as sometimes they didn't even match! I should point out were on Magento, so product name = Both the Heading and Title of the page, the meta title can be set separately. When i refer to title I mean both <title>and <h1></strong><br /><br />Before they existed as such<br />URL:  domain.com/200-x-0-5-g-rs-232-balance.html<br />TItle:   PC-1234 200 x 0.5g x 0.3 RS-232 Balance<br /><br />This format was (Product Code, Capacities, Resolutions, Accuracy, Product Title)<br /><br />The issue was all 60 products in a page followed this format. Navigating through the page was a nightmare and was just a jumble of numbers and highly confusing even to me who learnt what they all mean, especially when you had 8 products from the same range you got presented with<br /><br />APC-1234 200 x 0.5g x 0.3 RS-232 Balance<br />APC-1235 500 x 1g x 0.3 RS-232 Balance<br />APC-1236 1000 x 2g x 0.3 RS-232 Balance<br />APC-1238 5000 x 10g x 0.3 RS-232 Balance<br />APC-1239 10000 x 15g x 0.3 RS-232 Balance<br />APC-1210 20000 x 25g x 0.3 RS-232 Balance<br />APC-1211 50000 x 50g x 0.3 RS-232 Balance</p> <p>I changed them to something more user friendly.<br /><br />URL: domain.com/200g-precision-balance.html<br />Title: 200g Precision Balance<br /><br />This has seen the following benefits<br />- URL is now clear and means something to the user<br />- Product titles are easy to navigate and the page is more pleasing to the eye<br />- The jumble of numbers in the title are now all labelled and shown below each product listing in bullet point so the user can see the basic spec of a product without having to decipher any titles<br /><br />Upon reflection I has a couple of concerns I was hoping you could discuss, I am wondering if I have made the titles too simple.<br />1) I have no product code in the title<br />We have our own products manufactured and sell existing brands with their own product codes.                   NOINDEX, FOLLOW on product page - how about images indexing?

                  Hi, Since we have a lot of similar products with duplicate descriptions, I decided to NOINDEX, FOLLOW most of these different variants which have duplicate content. However, I guess it would be useful in marketing terms if Google image search still listed the images of the products in image search. How does the image search of Google actually work - does it read the NOINDEX on the product page and therefore skip the image also or is the image search completely dependent on the ALT tag of any image found on our site?                   Target keywords on homepage or sub page?

                  Is it better to target main keywords on a site's homepage, or in a sub page. I would usually assume the homepage, but if the domain for the homepage doesn't include the keyword is it better to have a sub page with an exact match URL? For example we target the keyword "abc123" Is it better to optimise the homepage: brandname.com Or create a page to target it: brandname.com/abc123/ And leave the homepage to target brand keywords, but link to the "abc123" page. Whats the best option?

                  Missing meta descriptions on indexed pages, portfolio, tags, author and archive pages. I am using SEO all in one, any advice?

                  I am having a few problems that I can't seem to work out.....I am fairly new to this and can't seem to work out the following: Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙂 1. I am missing alot of meta description tags. I have installed "All in One SEO" but there seems to be no options to add meta descriptions in portfolio posts. I have also written meta descriptions for 'tags' and whilst I can see them in WP they don't seem to be activated. 2. The blog has pages indexed by WP- called Part 2 (/page/2), Part 3 (/page/3) etc. How do I solve this issue of meta descriptions and indexed pages? 3. There is also a page for myself, the author, that has multiple indexes for all the blog posts I have written, and I can't edit these archives to add meta descriptions. This also applies to the month archives for the blog. 4. Also, SEOmoz tells me that I have too many links on my blog page (also indexed) and their consequent tags.
