When should you redirect a domain completely?

We moved a website over to a new domain name. We used 301 redirects to redirect all the pages individually (around 150 redirects).
So my question is, when should we just kill the old site completely and just redirect (forward/point) the old domain over to the new one?

I've been seeing a fairly long time for Google to catch up with 301s and pass along the link juice....a couple of months. Consensus is that something around 90-95% of the link juice passes through a 301. There's some talk about 301s not passing link juice forever, although I haven't heard any evidence of exactly how long that might be, but seems like it would be in the 1-2 year range at least. Just my opinion & recollection of a whole bunch of other people's opinions though :-).

Follow up question - if redirecting a domain completely, how much would doing so affect the rankings? I'm assuming it will take some time for the new domain to catch up to where the old domain was, but how long might that be? And would the links for the old domain still count?

If I would be at your place, I would have checked the links that are pointing to the old URL and see if the links quality is good and will help the new domain, I would have done the page level 301 redirection. If for some reason the links are not helpful for the new website, I would have done the page level redirection until the old pages get removed from the Google index and new pages get crawled.
Once this happened, I would have reduced the redirections to only one that is domain level redirection and this is to let the audience move to the new website.
P.S: Using Change of Address Idea by Mike King sounds powerful to me!

If there are good links out there pointing to the old site, then killing the old site (and its 301s) will throw away that link juice.
If hosting costs are an issue, simply make DNS changes to point the old site at your new servers, then create a little shell of a site on the new servers for the old domain, and 301 redirect just as you are doing today.
There's some thought that 301'ed links don't carry juice forever, but I don't know that I've ever seen that proven out. Regardless, as long as there are real users occasionally landing on those other sites with the old links, you'd want them to end up on the right pages on your new site if they click those old links...and without that 301, they're SOL.

You should fill out a Change of Address in Webmaster Tools as well and then confirm that all of the old URLs are out of the index. The redirects however should remain in place as long as you have links pointing from the old site.

Is domain authority lost if you create a 301 redirect but mark it as noindex, nofollow?
Hi everyone, Our company sells products in various divisions. While we've been selling Product A and Product B under our original brand, we've recently created a new division with a new domain to focus on a Product B. The new domain has virtually no domain authority (3) while the original domain has some (37). We want customers to arrive on the new domain when they search for key search terms related to Product B instead of the pages that previously existed on our main website. If we create 301 redirects for the pages and content on the main site and add noindex, nofollow tags, will we lose the domain authority that we have from our original domain because the pages now have the noindex, nofollow tags? I read a few blog posts from Moz that said there isn't any domain authority lost with 301 redirects but I'm not sure if that is true if the pages are noindex, nonofollow. Redirect old image that has backlinks
Hi Moz Community! I'm doing an audit of a website and did a backlink analysis. In the backlink analysis, there is an image that has 66 backlinks but the image doesn't exist on the website anymore (it was on a website that was created in 2011 - 2 web launches ago). I don't believe a 301 redirect will work for an image that doesn't exist anymore. How would I redirect the image URL (it's WordPress so we have a specific URL that other websites are linking to but get 404 errors) without going to each individual website and requesting they change the URL link? Any advice or recommendations would be great. Thanks!

I'm a newb, built a website with Wix want to redirect it to a domain I own, but am reading that Wix is bad for this
Hi, I am building this site for my boss http://charlesfridmanpr.wix.com/real-estate and am still working on it. I'm getting close to the stage where I want to redirect it to the URL we want to use, but in reading these forums, it says that because all of subpages (?) have a # in them, they will not be read or indexed by google. I am very new to this, and while it may not look like it, the website has taken me quite a while to design. Is there a way to fix this? We want to appear high up for a non competitive keyword. Thanks

Unique domains vs. single domain for UGC sites?
Working on a client project - a UGC community that has a DTC model as well as a white label model. Is it categorically better to have them all under the same domain? Trying to figure which is better: XXX,XXX pages on one site vs. A smaller XXX,XXX pages on one site and XX,XXX pages on 10-20 other sites all pointing to the primary site. The thinking on the second was that those domains would likely achieve high DA as well as the primary, and would passing their value to the primary. Thoughts? Any other considerations we should be thinking about?

Community inside the domain or in a separate domain
Hi there, I work for an ecommerce company as an online marketing consultant. They make kitchenware, microware and so on. The are reviewing their overall strategy and as such they want to build up a community. Ideally, they would want to have the community in a separate domain. This domain wouldn't have the logo of the brand. This community wouldn't promote the brand itself. The brand would post content occassionally and link the store domain. The reasoning of this approach is to not interfere in the way of the community users and also the fact that the branded traffic acquired doesn't end up buying at the store I like this approach but I am concerned because the brand is not that big to have two domains separated and lose all the authority associated with one strong domain. I would definitely have everything under the same domain, store and community, otherwise we would have to acquire traffic for two domains. 1. What do you think of both scenarios, one domain versus two? Which one is better? 2. Do you know any examples of ecommerce companies with successful communities within the store domain? Redirect ruined domain to new domain without passing link juice
A new client has a domain which has been hammered by bad links, updates etc and it's basically on its arse because of previous SEO guys. They have various domains for their business (brand.com, brand.co.uk) and want to use a fresh domain and take it from there. Their current domain is brand.com (the ruined one). They're not bothered about the rankings for brand.com but they want to redirect brand.com to brand.co.uk so that previous clients can find them easily. Would a 302 redirect work for this? I don't want to set up a 301 redirect as I don't want any of the crappy links pointing across. Thanks!

How do I list the subdomains of a domain?
Hi Mozers, I am trying to find what subdomains are currently active on a particular domain. Is there a way to get a list of this information? The only way I could think of doing it is to run a google search on; site:example.com -site:www.example.com The only issues with this approach is that a majority of the indexed pages exist on the non-www domain and I still have thousands of pages in the results (mainly from the non-www). Is there another way to do it in Google? OR is there a server admin online tool that will tell me this information? Cheers, Dan
