Use "Brand Name" or things like "Free Shipping" in Ecommerce Product Title Tags?
-
Given the current industry best practices and changes to Google algorithms, should I be using "Product name...Brand Name" or something like "Product Name...Free Shipping (or similar)" in my ecommerce title tags? Thanks!

Brand + Product, in that order for Title Tag is definitely recommended not only for your SERP, but also to influence the quality of your Product Feed. Usually we do Brand + Product - SiteName. And if there is room, a USP at the end of that too. so: Brand + Product - SiteName + USP is our usual Title tag pattern.
It's also good to have some variation on the On Page Title (H1) and make it different from the Title Tag. Usually the H1 is just the Product Name itself, and H2, H3's will reiterate the Brand/Category/Offer, etc.

Title tag is great way to catches users attention and including free shipping can be an added point to cater user attention and increase the CTR volume but I believe title tag also have a much SEO value to you have to use it wisely and play it around to a place where you can incorporate branding as well as SEO keywords.
If it is not possible to add website USP in the title but you can include brand name and product titles then I would prefer to go it that way but remember in my experience Meta description also help people increase a click through rate to a greater extent so product testimonials, special features and your business USP can be used in Meta description tag to increase the CTR and conversion rate.
Hope this helps!

Thanks again for taking the time to provide your feedback. Yes I do have each title tag different for each product. Thanks again!

Keep in mind what works for others doesn't necessarily works for you, I guess you will have to run your own tests. The programmatically wording change worked for me to avoid duplication and improve ranking. I will stay tuned to hear what others have been testing.

I understand what you're saying but it's not the answer I'm looking for. I have a history with strong rankings for product pages but am having a discussion with someone else who believes it should be worded differently. I know that rankings and CTR don't always work hand-in-hand when it comes to title tags and changing them later could cause issues with ranking. What I'm looking for is specifics from people who have tried it both ways and have an opinion or who have done it a certain way and have had lots of success. I appreciate your responses, but I'm looking for a specific "I've done it this way and believe it's right based on...."

I think your approach is wrong. You can't tweak the <title>for ranking and then change it for CTR, first because CTR is a factor in ranking too, maybe a little one, but the general consensus is that it counts; second because if you change it once you rank well tweaking it for CTR you risk of loosing ranking... <title> is one of the most powerful on-page factor... <a href="http://moz.com/search-ranking-factors">http://moz.com/search-ranking-factors</a></p> <p>So I strongly believe you should design it for both CTR and ranking from start.</p> <p>Since <title> is so critical for SEO I think you should test it: <a href="http://moz.com/blog/how-do-i-successfully-run-seo-tests-on-my-website-whiteboard-friday">http://moz.com/blog/how-do-i-successfully-run-seo-tests-on-my-website-whiteboard-friday</a></p> <p>I don't think there's much doubts the keywords you are willing to rank should be there, but you don't know how much is too much unless you test.</p> <p>To make an example your original question was "product name" + "brand name" or "product name" + "free shipping"</p> <p>For that business and for the analysis you already did on keywords how much important is "brand name" as a keyword? And a good ranking of the product page for that keyword is good, or it would be better to focus on different keywords for product page and leave the "brand name" for a brand page or category page?</p> <p>"Free shipping" is considered damn important for a website conversion rate, and have been for a while, so having it on the title could improve your serp CTR as well... But in what position? Maybe better to give your target keyword the best placement (the beginning of the title)... But remember title is chopped (read the link I posted in my previous answer <a href="http://moz.com/blog/new-title-tag-guidelines-preview-tool">http://moz.com/blog/new-title-tag-guidelines-preview-tool</a>), which means depending on the lenght of the product name you may have to dynamically change the title wording to accomodate everything you consider relevant.</p> <p>Last thing, looks at zappos and their home, categories, products... The always put the free shipping, but they adapt the title depending on the page.</p> <p>Last last, it's the title of the product pages, you want it to be different for every page, even when product names doesn't differ much, so you need to programmatically change the wording to avoid title duplication.</p> <p>But I am not that much of a SEO expert so take my advices with a grain of salt, and wait for others to support or bash my answer.</p></title>

My question relates to Product Pages only. I'm talking about best practices for ranking and CTR. Which is best for which? Specifically, right now our main goal is to rank first, CTR second, since if we aren't ranking then no one will click.

Which title tags? Product pages? Brand pages? Categories? All of them?
And your doubts about what to put there are related to serp CTR? Ranking?
I think you should keep in mind <title>is very much related to CTR because that's what people will see in a prominent position in serp, so I think you should craft them to be as much related to the search query you are targeting as possible, and of course make it as catchy as possible. Unfortunately I am not aware of any solution to A/B test <title></p> <p>About SEO, as far as I know is one of the strongest asset when it comes to on-page optimization.</p> <p>It's few months old but bet still very much relevant: <a href="http://moz.com/blog/new-title-tag-guidelines-preview-tool">http://moz.com/blog/new-title-tag-guidelines-preview-tool</a></p></title>

We changed our domain, I used the move tool in Google Search Console and I am having our site redirected and go daddy, and now I spoke with someone who suggest we do a 301 redirect for all pages on our site and I’m not sure that’s the correct move.
We just changed our domain name after 15 years. when I bought the new domain name I called Go Daddy and they instructed me to contact my google G sweet admin account and change all of our emails over which I did and then I went into Shopify who is my host and changed my primary domain there and then I went back to Go Daddy and had my old website forwarded to my new site. since then there has been nothing but problems with Google. my product feed from my merchant center account has been suspended three or four times now, I tried to rename and move all of my Google accounts from my old domain to my new one, but I am not an SEO person... after making the changes I have started google chats with analytics department with the merchant center with Google as they all keep saying that it looks fine but I’m not convinced because the product feed keeps getting disapproved. So I posted an ad for help and the Guy I spoke with suggested I do a 301 redirect for every single page on my old site, But I’m concerned that might confuse things further? I’ve already started the move in Google Search console And in Shopify I added the old domain back into the domains section and am having it redirectEd that way too... I guess I’m just looking to know which way I should proceed, any and all advice is warmly welcome thank you in advance Maureen

Should we change branded keywords based on audience knowledge?
Good Morning Moz, Wanted to pose a question to the community that our company has been wrestling with internally for a while now. I think your insights would be tremendously valuable. Our company effectively has two business units, one that is online and one that is offline. Each appeals to a different customer base as well. In one business unit, the larger, more offline and better established of the two, we refer to ourselves as a "manufacturer of high end automobiles" (not true, but using as an example). We've carried this through to the other business unit which is very small, web-based, and growing, but have quickly realized that the majority of would-be customers do not search for "automobiles", they search for "cars." And the keyword volume is night and day. On the order of 5000 searches/mo for automobiles, and 1,000,000 searches/mo for cars (again, not true for these example keywords but this is the actual ratio against our real keywords). So, do we optimize heavily against a lesser known and used keyword, or do we try to target "cars" which sees higher search volume even though it's significantly more competitive? We have this problem with a few different branded keywords, actually, and our search performance reflects as much. If someone were to search for these lesser known keywords they would find us, and we rank well. But the volume isn't there. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Is putting an email address in the page title a good idea?
As our Contact Us page title was a little short I added in sales@example.com So "Contact us : Sales@example.com" We don't get a lot of spam and it hasn't noticeable increased since we did this. Tynt suggests that a reasonable number of people have copied and pasted the email - presumably to contact us Is it worth experimenting with further or a waste of time?

Should I use always the highest bid?
In google adwords the highest bid apparently gets more impressions, but always more clicks? I wonder if I can save money by not targeting the 1st position, but from example 3-6, the ad will still be visible once the search results come in. how do you guys usually set the bid?

What's the most effective web marketing tactic you've seen or used that very few people know about?
I wanted to start a thread to share some of the really cool marketing tactics I've seen on the web that I think few folks are using, AND ask the community here what you've seen, too! Some of my favorite undiscovered or less-used tactics include: Making smart use of bios for conferences, events, interviews, etc. where folks ask you or your team members for a "bio" and you get to control the links, link targets, and anchor text. This is super powerful in my experience, so long as you have a moderately strong profile or regular participation in this type of stuff. Price anchoring on conversion pages, e.g. http://www.trackur.com/options - note how they start with the highest price to help "anchor" the audience to bigger numbers. A great principle of psychology in action. Using re-marketing to draw people to content rather than just purchase/conversion pages. The effectiveness of these is, I've heard, dramatically higher than the usual re-marketing campaigns that take you to a squeeze or purchase page. I can't share the example I'm thinking of, unfortunately, but I'd urge you to try it! Get more social shares and clicks by SHARING MORE THAN ONCE! A lot of folks feel like they are burdening their audience on Twitter/Facebook/G+ or frustrating them if they post multiple times, when in fact, very, very few of your followers are online at any given time. I've tested this myself and I get almost no negative feedback but can triple or more the number of shares/+1s/likes/visits/etc I get just by sharing 2-3X! The key is not to be too repetitive or annoying, and to acknowledge past shares (at least for me). e.g. I'll say "my blog post from last night on XYZ" and get a ton more clicks. What are your favorites? Please share!

Question On Product Review Video Production
We are looking to make reviews of many of the products we have on site (staff reviews). The only problem I am having is our products are not stored at our office (nor can they be as they weigh hundreds of pounds and are super expensive to ship). So what would be a good solution to show in the video? Should we just do a slide share of still shots of the products with a voice overlay or try something more of a hybrid that uses a whiteboard? The products themselves cater to gardeners and the DIY crowd so it doesn't need to be super involved.

The Effects of "Call for Pricing" Pricing Structures
I have a wholesaler who sells great products but they have an internet pricing policy that states we cannot show prices online and that we must have a "call for pricing" or "request a quote/price" button instead because retailers are losing sales due to lower prices online from other retailers. I know, I know.. They are out of their mind. I have already told them that they should have online MAP pricing requirements to protect their retailers but they refuse to even set an MSRP! I've been looking for some articles to show the statistics of customers lost from not having a price on your site. Does anyone have any information or suggested links on this topic? and the final question is if I was to remove the prices from my website, would that in turn affect my rankings?

Is it possible to extract the exact USER search terms used on adwords campaigns?
Suppose I have a adwords campaign, with an adgroup targetting the broad match term "cell phones". Is it possible to get metrics on the exact keywords users have used to create ad impressions, clicks or conversions for that campaign? Many thanks
