Content hidden behind a 'read all/more..' etc etc button
-
Hi
Anyone know latest thinking re 'hidden content' such as body copy behind a 'read more' type button/link in light of John Muellers comments toward end of last year (that they discount hidden copy etc) & follow up posts on Search Engine Round Table & Moz etc etc ?
Lots of people were testing it and finding such content was still being crawled & indexed so presumed not a big deal after all but if Google said they discount it surely we now want to reveal/unhide such body copy if it contains text important to the pages seo efforts.
Do you think it could be the case that G is still crawling & indexing such content BUT any contribution that copy may have had to the pages seo efforts is now lost if hidden. So to get its contribution to SEO back one needs to reveal it, have fully displayed ? OR no need to worry and can keep such copy behind a 'read more' button/link ?

Well, we have taken the big parts, like the valuable metas, and made sure those were visible, and over the next month or two we are slowly adding pieces of the content back into the main portion of the page.
A lot of the content was just fluff, and really wasn't helping us. Our original website was 600 pages, of those 600 pages only about 40 were actually ranking, so what we did across the board was make new pages to exemplify our services better, with better URL's, better optimization etc, then we took the old pages that were currently ranked, and brought them over UNTOUCHED with the same url and are putting them in the blog section.
Over the next month, we will slowly be pushing people to the pages we want people to be landing on. So, essentially, all of the ranked content is still on the site, in one way or another, in as untouched as possible. We also added new, optimized content, that is now the core of our website, and did a lot of outside marketing to help add to the potential traffic loss from a site redesign.
We relaunched on Sunday, and so far our numbers are pretty on par! So, we will see, I will keep you updated!

thanks for commenting hashtag
and are you now going to try and show that content as per John Muellers/Googles comments that they will be discounting hidden copy ?
Have you noticed any change in ranking conforming to when you hid the copy ?

Thanks for the excellent response Ray, this is exactly the info i was after
Re crawling indexing, Absolutely !! I think people presumed because it was still being crawled and indexed then everything was ok, but theres no reason why being crawled & indexed means that Google is not heavily discounting it and i think given JM comments that this is now very likely, so as you confirm, best to show all unique copy
Thanks

Thanks Sheena
The scenario im looking into this for is for a client for whom i wrote a load of home page body copy which they then got dev to hide 2 3rds of behind a 'read more' button and then text drops down.
The text inc keywords anchor tex rich links to sub pages to help on page seo so I presume that i should request this recently hidden copy should now be re-revealed since likely not counting towards the on-page seo anymore ? (the sites just been redesigned so no option to redesign again) but can get the copy unhidden or leave 'as is'

Good morning!
I will give you a real world example with the site I am in charge of. Our previous website was a horrendous grouping of words spun together into some sort of readable content. Somehow it did manage to gain some ranking. We redesigned the website and our new homepage has a much more beautiful layout and interactive design full of images.
In order to keep the text we included a tab system that would expand when clicked on it, the text it painful to read, but for now we need it, so we tried to hide it from the user as much as possible. If you look at the actual code it looks something like this (we use wordpress by the way):
[wptab name='Content']
Content here shows up above the tap, bla bla bla bla bla bla bla
[expand title="This is the expand button"]
this is all hidden from the user until they actually click the expand button.
[/expand]
[/wptab]

Google never said that they would not be crawling and indexing the content and a quick Google search of your own pages should show that the content is being indexed, as it should.
However, JM's mention of it being discounted **is very concerning, **especially to ecommerce websites where tabbed information is very popular.
For this reason, I've chosen to look towards Amazon and their product page methodology. Most of us have probably been frustrated that Amazon outranks us in the SERPs, when it comes to ecommerce. They elect to show all the product information in one long, seemingly unfriendly UI. However, it works and works very well.
I'm moving away from tabbed content and electing to show longer product pages. The only content I'm keeping behind tabs is content that is common across my competitors, such as specifications, size charts, ect.
My reviews, product Q&As, and other pertinent information is being moved up to the front of the page to get the most authority as possible. I suggest doing the same.

Thanks Karl
so you think if its hidden is not contributing so i should reveal it ?
The contents wanted/needed so i don't want to get rid of it just want to know if its contributing at all when hidden or if as John Mueller said its discounted, so it should be re-revealed to get the seo benefit of keywords in the copy and anchor text rich links within it to sub department and product pages ?

Yup...the content is not hidden from the googlebot...so it's still read, indexed and used....
But as Sheena noted, that's "old school" design thinking, eh!
-
I agree with Kari's comment. Using this tactic is becoming more and more rare for me, as I have moved towards using tabbed content (which there's also a good amount of debate about its SE-friendliness) and anchor links for having additional content in an easy to navigate, lighter/better designed way. A good example is at http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/macbook-pro.
I hope this helps!

Google still crawls and indexes "hidden content" but from a user point of view if you have to hide it then it probably isn't worth reading. From experience, we use some css to dropdown extra content when the client insists on it being there but it is too long.
If it has to be there then I don't think it will be doing any harm but if you don't need it then get rid.

Will I have duplicate content on my own website?
Hello Moz community, We are an agency providing services to various industries, and among them the hair salon industry. On our website, we have our different service pages in the main menu, as usual. These service pages are general information and apply to any industry. We also have a page on the website that is only intended for the hair salon industry. On this page, we would like to link new service pages: they will be the same services as our “general” services, but specialized for hair salons. My questions relate to duplicate content: Do we have to make the new individual service pages for hair salons with completely different text, even though it’s the same service, in order to avoid having duplicate content? Can we just change a few words from the “general service” page to specifically target hair salons, and somehow avoid Google seeing it as duplicate content? Reminder that these pages will be internal links inside of the hair salon industry page. Thank you in advance for your answers, Gaël

Suggestions on dealing with duplicate content?
What are the best ways to protect / deal with duplicate content? I've added an example scenario, Nike Trainer model 1 – has an overview page that also links to a sub-page about cushioning, one about Gore-Tex and one about breathability. Nike Trainer model 2,3,4,5 – have an overview page that also links to sub-pages page about cushioning , Gore-Tex and breathability. In each of the sub-pages the URL is a child of the parent so a distinct page from each other e.g. /nike-trainer/model-1/gore-tex /nike-trainer/model-2/gore-tex. There is some differences in material composition, some different images and of course the product name is referred multiple times. This makes the page in the region of 80% unique. Any suggestions welcome about the above example or any other ways you guys know of dealing with duplicate content.

Acquired Old, Bad Content Site That Ranks Great. Redirect to Content on My Site?
Hello. my company acquired another website. This website is very old, the content within is decent at best, but still manages to rank very well for valuable phrases. Currently, we're leaving the entire site active on its own for its brand, but i'd like to at least redirect some of the content back to our main website. I can't justify spending the time to create improved content on that site and not our main site though. What would be the best practice here? 1. Cross-domain canonical - and build the new content on our main website? 2. 301 Redirect Old Article to New Location containing better article 3. Leave the content where it is - you won't be able to transfer the ranking across domain. Thanks for your input.

Dates in URL's
I have an issue of duplicate content errors and duplicate page titles which is penalising my site. This has arisen because a number of URLs are suffixed by date(s) and have been spidered . In principle I do not want any url with a suffixed date to be spidered. Eg:- www.carbisbayholidays.co.uk/carbis-bay/houses-in-carbis-bay/seaspray.htm/06_07_13/13_07_13 http://www.carbisbayholidays.co.uk/carbis-bay/houses-in-carbis-bay/seaspray.htm/20_07_13/27_07_13 Only this URL should be spidered:- http://www.carbisbayholidays.co.uk/carbis-bay/houses-in-carbis-bay/seaspray.htm I have over 10,000 of these duplicates and firstly wish to remove them on block from Google ( not one by one ) and secondly wish to amend my robots.txt file so the URL's are not spidered. I do not know the format for either. Can anyone help please.

Exponentially Increasing Duplicate Content On Blogs
Most of the clients that I pick up are either new to SEO best practices, or have worked with sketchy SEO providers in the past, who did little more than build spammy links. Most of them have deployed little if any on-site SEO best practices, and early on I spend a lot of time fixing canonical and duplicate content issues alla 301 redirects. Using SEOMOZ, however, I see a lot of duplicate content issues with blogs that live on the sites I work on. With every new blog article we publish, more duplicate content builds up. I feel like duplicate content on blogs grows exponentially, because every time you write a blog article, it exists provisionally on the blog homepage, the article link, a category page, maybe a tag page, and an author page. I have a two-part question: Is duplicate content like this a problem for a blog -- and for the website that the blog lives on? Are search engines able to parse out that this isn't really duplicate content? If it is a problem, how would you go about solving it? Thanks in advance!

Duplicate Page Content Question
This article was published on fastcompany.com on March 19th. http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/164/designing-facebook It did not receive much traffic, so it was re-posted on Co.Design today (March 27th) where it has received significantly more traffic. http://www.fastcodesign.com/1669366/facebook-agrees-the-secret-to-its-future-success-is-design My question is if google will dock us for reprinting/reusing content on another site (even if it is a sister site within the same company). If they do frown on that, is there a proper way to attribute the content to the source material/site (fastcompany.com)?

Cross Domain Duplicate Content
Hi My client has a series of websies, one main website and several mini websites, articles are created and published daily and weekly, one will go on a the main website and the others on one, two, or three of the mini sites. To combat duplication, i only ever allow one article to be indexed (apply noindex to articles that i don't wanted indexed by google, so, if 3 sites have same article, 2 sites will have noindex tag added to head). I am not completely sure if this is ok, and whether there are any negative affects, apart from the articles tagged as noindex not being indexed. Are there any obvious issues? I am aware of the canonical link rel tag, and know that this can be used on the same domain, but can it be used cross domain, in place of the noindex tag? If so, is it exactly the same in structure as the 'same domain' canonical link rel tag? Thanks Matt
