      Hey Mozzers!

Got a question for you. I’ve been assigned my first ecommerce client. He doesn’t want to list his physical business location, as he fears that including his address will hurt him on a national level (he ships all over the world). He’s not particularly interested in ranking locally, although he wouldn’t mind it. He only wants to show a PO box address. Will this help or hurt him? I believe it’s the latter. Also, he has 16 shipping points across the U.S. Is it helpful to add these cities and states to the site?

      Thanks in advance!

      -Kanya

          Hi Kanya,

That's right - if the company is not local, having a P.O. box where they receive mail is totally fine. No worries about that.

Thanks for your response, Miriam! So, since local SEO isn't what he's aiming for, is it safe to say including a PO box on the site will not hurt him on a national scale? Thanks again!

Hi Ryan! He's not interested in having walk in traffic. His goal is to rank nationally and he feels adding a Google + listing and including his address on the site will hurt his national campaign.

                Hi Kanya!

Local SEO and local rankings are meant for businesses that make in-person contact with their customers. This generally does not apply to e-commerce companies, most of which operate virtually. So, whether you use a P.O. box or not may be a bit of a moot point here. If the customer DOES make face-to-face contact and does want to rank locally, he cannot use a P.O. box on most citation platforms - it won't be accepted. He would need a real physical address.

Regarding adding cities and states to the site, of course, he should explain which places he ships to, but if like most businesses he ships to the 48 states or something like that, then this really isn't a reason to create unique content, as presumably the shipping process is the same for all customers. Don't just add a list of states or cities for the sake of SEO. Google frowns on such practices.

Likely, if the client makes no personal contact with his customers, organic SEO is going to be where you need to put focus - not Local SEO. Hope these thoughts are helpful!

Hi Kanya. This would hurt in terms of Local Rankings as Google doesn't want PO Boxes listed, "Use a precise, accurate address to describe your business location. PO Boxes or mailboxes located at remote locations are not acceptable." from: https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177. Is he interested in having walk in traffic to his business? Or is it even set up for that? If not, Local probably isn't the answer. Cheers!

Google My Business: Company listing is showing in search instead of division address - similar names/same city

Hi! I have a client whose company name is very similar to one if their company divisions. This division has multiple locations but its main location is in the same city as the parent company. The problem is that when you search for the division, the parent company shows up. The parent company has a physical address, but most users searching need to be going to the division address which takes customers. They are having problems with customers coming to the parent company address instead. I have made the Google My Business parent company page to show service areas instead of their business address. Yet, their listing still comes up first when searching for the division location. This is because of part of the parent company name is in the division name. My client wants users to be able to find the division more so than the parent company. Anyone had this issue before? Any tips would be great!

Should apartment management companies have a separate website for each of their properties?

I work for a company that owns and manages apartments.  I would like to know which of the two website design decisions are better from an SEO perspective: One single website that contains pages for all of our apartments.  (Example: http://www.equityapartments.com) Separate websites for each apartment and one main corporate website allows users to search through our apartments.  (Example: https://www.greystar.com) I have spoken to three marketing companies have all recommended option 2.  The best reason I have heard is because then the separate apartments are all more likely to rank.  They say Google doesn't want to rank multiple pages of the same website. But Google would still know that I have an administrative relationship between the sites.  (Source: https://moz.com/blog/how-google-knows-what-sites-you-control-and-why-it-matters-whiteboard-friday)  So I don't know why they would treat multiple sites differently than one site? For what it's worth, it seems the majority of apartment management companies use a different website for each property. So should have a separate website for each of their properties?

How to Have Multiple Listings appear on Google maps

Hi my client has two locations for his restaurants: Me Gusta Tacos He wants to have both his locations show up in the map pack, which they currently do when you type in Restaurants, Dinner, food near me etc... However, when you google Me Gusta Tacos the Google listing shows up on the right for one of his locations, but there isn't a Map Pack for his two locations. I wasn't sure if a map pack only shows up when there are 3 or more locations, for instance, a chipotle which I added an image below to compare too. HGOgln5 Jgdoi4Y

                    Duplicate central index listing

Hello Moz community I have a duplicate listing in Central Index (GB) and all communication channels seem unresponsive. I have emailed support and general sales. I even tried contacting them on their facebook account. I am stumped as to how I can get this duplicate listing removed as I have no control over it and the support is non-existent. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

How do you go about updating / correcting bad business listings when you cannot contact the website directly?

There is a business listing I wish to correct / update on 411dir.biz There is no way to contact the website online, and in cases like this, I try to do a whois lookup, and reach out via the email / phone number there. This site seems impossible to connect with, has anybody else come up against situations like this in the past, if so what do you tell your client / what other approaches do people have? Thanks!

What is the best address format to display for a buissness for SEO?

There is a new location opening soon and would like to set up local pages for it.  What is the best/most SEO friendly way to write out the physical address? I looked on USPS and they show: 7227 W GRAND PKWY S
RICHMOND TX 77407 But local businesses seem to have the West and South written out: 7301 West Grand Parkway SouthRichmond, TX 77407Is there a best practice for this, or does it not make much of a difference as long as the website/local listings all match exactly?  Not sure about writing out "West" or using "S." for the cardinal direction.

                    2 Businesses + Same Address = Not a Problem?

Imagine someone who has 2 separate businesses with the same (home) address. Both are verified Google My Business G+ pages, each with its own separate website. Essentially the old business that is being de-emphasized is a guitar lesson teacher's studio. This G+ page is set as a storefront where people come to. The new business is similar, it is music lessons (private in-home instruction). This G+ page is set to have a service area - this goes along with their new business model. We all know that consistent NAP is essential BUT do you think these are competing against each other because they share an address even though the businesses are separate?

What would Cause listing to fall off local search map spot?

Any reason a listing that was showing in Google between the 3 and 5 spot on local map search would suddenly disappear all together from the map position for a specific keyword?
