Best tools for an initial website health check?
-
Hi,
I'd like to offer free website health checks (basic audits) and am wondering what tools other people use for this? It would be good to use something that presents the data well.Moz is great but it gets expensive if I want to offer these to many businesses in the hope of taking on just a few as clients and doing a full manual audit for them.
So far I've tried seositecheckup.com (just checks a single page though), metaforensics.io and mysiteauditor.
Thanks!
-
Sounds like a good idea. I'm just trying to provide basic data on a potential clients' site - traffic, rankings, main errors and things that are working for them. Some tools actually do a pretty good job of this, but only seem to do this for the homepage, rather than the entire site. I guess I'll have to use multiple tools and hope the effort is worth it as it's a free service.
Do you use SEO profiler?
-
Hi John,
Do you use SEMRush? I've been thinking of signing up. Can you run unlimited reports do you know? Screaming Frog is great and is what I'll use for thorough Audits but I'm just trying to generate lead generation/potential new client reports.
thanks

I like Ccreaming Frog and SEMRush as well. WebsiteGrader.com is good in a pinch too. SEO Profiler has a nice set of tools that have come a long way in the last 2 years. I think this is one of those tools where we all have a different opinion as to what works best, which would explain so many options!
I feel like I have tons of great data...I just can't find a good way to display it graphically so it is clear to the client and helps me use the research to convert prospects. Maybe we should come up with a killer report template we can all use?

James
For a free report I would start with website.grader.com - a couple of screen grabs, Rand backed it a few weeks ago. For a very low cost report I would use semrush.com.
Hope that assists.

Good point.
-
ScreamingFrog gives all the data you want. Tools for the purpose of a creating a sleek report usually don't give the full picture. It's those issues you draw out yourself that makes a difference.
-
Really it's best to use S. Frog then and to extract that info for a website review instead of trying to find software that gives the overall 'health' of a site and produces a report?
thanks for your answer by the way!
-
I second ScreamingFrog. Nothing else comes close.
-
Hi James,
For page load, network, speed test I have used Pingdom.com in the past. They recently went more pay to use but it is a nice set of tools for basic test. There is still some free stuff you can use at tools.pingdom.com
For a quick SEO pass. Man I love ScreamingFrog! You can quickly identify header errors, long titles, descriptions, lack of h1 tags and so much more. When I do general quick audits for trouble shooting problems posted on this board, its my go to.
Hope this helps,
Don

Why Do Different Tools Report 404s Differently?
Hi Mozers, How come Moz reports just six 404 errors, whereas Google Search Console reports 250 and Screaming Frog only reports a dozen? It seems to me that these results are all over the place. Shouldn't these reports be more consistent? I do understand that Search Console includes historical data and that URLs or issues need to be "marked as fixed" in order for them to go away, however, even if I do this, Google ends up reporting far more errors than anything else. Do 404s reported by Moz and Screaming Frog NOT include external links? It seems to me that this could be partially responsible for the issue. Also, is there a way to efficiently track the source of the 404s besides clicking on "Linked From" within Search Console 250 times? I was looking for something like this is Moz or SF but no luck. Any help is appreciated. Thanksabunch!

SEO impact of redirecting high ranking mirror site to the main website
During SEO audit for a client I noticed that they had over a dozen duplicate websites that are carbon copies of the main website. This was done via CMS platform and DNS. One of the mirror sites has about 400 indexed pages and has Moz DA of 42 and 137k External Equity-Passing Links. Full metrics comparison is attached. I originally planned on doing rel="canonical" on the mirror site but the CMS vendor never even heard of it and is refusing to implement it in the header. My only other option is doing one to one 301 redirects. Since the mirror site ranks well, even competes with main domain for some positions on the 1st page of SERP, what will be the impact after the redirects? Is doing 301's still the best option? Thanks! Potential spam websites with high DA linking back to us
Hey everybody, I'm going through all my sites and disavowing crap links. However, I'm having trouble distinguishing which high DA sites to disavow. What would you do? For example:
Moz Pro | | MEllsworth
https://moz.com/researchtools/ose/spam-analysis?site=busca.starmedia.com&target=domain&source=subdomain&page=1&sort=spam_score and https://moz.com/researchtools/ose/spam-analysis?site=cc879fe.activerain.com&target=domain&source=subdomain&page=1&sort=spam_score They both have tons of backlinks - both good and crap. The first has a DA of 72 and a Moz spam score of 4/17 and the second has a DA of 86 and a Moz spam score of 9/171 -
Checking multiple keywords in Rank tracking
Besides the rankings in the campaigns i want to check 100+ keywords at once in rank tracking. Is this possible and if not why? It says i can check 400 keywords a day but manually entering them is time consuming and that's exactly why i use SEOMOZ, to save time.

Adding new categories to my website and getting them ranked
Hi, I currently run a website and have added a couple of new categories lately. The website is Planes Trains Automobiles Co UK. For example I want to add "Planes for sale" as a new category. What is the best way to go about this? Will each aircraft added add content therefore ranking? I don't want to approach an SEO company yet as the service would be free for the time being? Thanks
