Fastest way to get new backlinks recognised by Moz?

Hi all,
I have seen a few discussions / advice pieces around this, but wondered what the current view is on the fastest way to get new backlinks recognised by Moz?
I have seen people say that the content needs to be shared (e.g. on Twitter), and advice around creating Bitly links. I am not convinced that these techniques are working.
On a related note, my website is very large. I have around 2.5m pages. Most of these pages are 3-4 clicks from the home page, but I have a small amount of important content much higher up in the site (1-2 clicks from the home page). Does Moz crawl pages nearer the home page more frequently, or does it make a pass of all pages on the site before it starts at the beginning again? If it makes a complete pass of all pages, then presumably making my site smaller will help to get Moz to see new content more quickly? Is there any other value to be gained in making a large site smaller?

Hey Neil,
We used to use bit.ly links for this purpose, but we've switched over to feed.ly links. When I said that both a) and b) would help to get your links indexed and picked up by Open Site Explorer, I suppose I meant that a two-pronged approach would be best. I would recommend doing both!

Many thanks for your response, it's really useful. I will be sure to check out Deep Crawl as I hadn't heard of that tool before.
Unfortunately, in my line of business, my site's Moz DA has a direct impact on my revenue, it's actually more important than my Google search rankings (crazy world we live in when the performance indicator matters more than the performance!!).

If you replace all of your mentions of "Moz" with "Google / search engines" your original post makes more sense.
It doesn't matter if Moz sees your links and it's a waste of your time to try and speed up Moz recognizing your new links - it will not help your organic performance in the slightest.
Also, I believe Moz has a crawl limit of 50,000 pages per site (someone from Moz can confirm / correct this) so it will only ever be scratching the surface of your 2.5m page site.
If you want to do a full crawl of your site to analyse issues, you might want to try Screaming Frog or Deep Crawl.

Firstly, are you saying to do both (a) and (b) in order to get new content indexed, or are you saying to do either (a) or (b), If the latter, which one is faster?
Secondly, is that definitely feed.ly? I thought we needed to use bitly.com?

Hey there! Tawny from Moz's Help Team here. These are great questions!
All of the links that end up in Just Discovered Links (JDL) come from tweeted feed.ly links.
This is separate to the Mozscape Index, which is what powers Open Site Explorer and the Links section of Moz Pro campaigns. Links that we discover are crawled for inclusion in our main index based on the authority of those URLs.
I’m afraid we don’t have a specific timeframe for when links from Just Discovered Links would appear in the Mozscape index. Because of the time it takes to identify links, schedule, crawl and index them, it can be one to two indexes before the links in JDL become established links in our index. A higher domain authority of linking domains will help ensure the links are included in the index, but do not help in speeding the process of getting links indexed.
The fastest way to get links indexed would be to a) tweet them as feed.ly links and b) search for your site in Open Site Explorer, which will prompt our tools to revisit your site and crawl it to include more links in the index. We start from your homepage and crawl the links we find from there, so it's possible that our tools might miss links that are more deeply buried into your site.

The Link Explorer project is the result of an incredible amount of perseverance and hard work by the team, and we’re proud to be able to finally share it with you — we know it’s going to revolutionize how you approach link building and make your job easier. You can read more about the tool here in Sarah Bird’s announcement post. Because Link Explorer improves on almost every aspect of Open Site Explorer, the metrics have improved, too. That means you’re likely going to see some Domain Authority and Page Authority discrepancies between OSE’s index and Link Explorer’s index. We definitely suggest you use the new DA/PA from Link Explorer, as they’re more accurate and refresh daily rather than monthly, as was the case with OSE’s index. However, we also realize that many of you use these metrics to report to your clients and colleagues, and a sudden change or fluctuation could potentially make your job harder. Which DA is the real DA? The new DA is based on a much larger index that has many improvements, several of which are designed to make the index more like Google’s than ever before. You should consider moving towards the new DA (and the old DA won’t be updated after April 26th 2018, so the sooner the better). While there will be fluctuations as we improve the model and add features to the index, we expect it to remain largely stable and to be a far more accurate picture of a site’s authority according to how it’s seen by Google. Why is Link Explorer’s DA/PA considered better than OSE’s, and which should I trust? The larger link index with improved crawl selection allows us to produce a stronger model that includes a much larger proportion of the web. That being said, DA and PA should always be considered in the context of your competitors. A drop in PA or DA relative to the old OSE is of little concern if your competitors saw similar movement. Is Domain Authority/Page Authority an absolute score or a relative one? Both DA and PA are relative to the Internet as a whole. If Facebook acquired a billion new links, everyone’s PA and DA would drop relative to Facebook. Because of this, it’s always best to look at PA and DA in comparison to your competitors. What does a drop/raise in DA mean in Link Explorer vs OSE? How can I explain this to my clients when I’m reporting it? DA and PA should always be considered in the context of your competitors. A drop or raise in PA or DA relative to the old OSE is of little concern if your competitors saw similar movement. Reporting that your site has moved from a DA of 45 to a DA of 42 doesn’t tell the whole story, but reporting that your site has a DA of 42 while your main competitor moved from a 43 to a 37 shows that, relative to the sites you’re competing against in the SERPs, your site has significantly more authority and ranking power. What’s happening to MozTrust and MozRank and why, and what should I replace those with? The improvements to our DA/PA and Spam Score metrics now now account for more important nuances in helping you determine one site’s ability to rank higher than another. Because they no longer correlate with Google’s ranking model as well as they used to, MozRank and MozTrust are being deprecated for better metrics. Users should rely on Page Authority, Domain Authority, and Spam Score to determine the importance and quality of pages, domains, and links. I have historical data I use to help my clients benchmark their progress. What do I do now that DA is calculated differently? You should annotate any KPI changes referencing the change in DA and PA. However, most importantly, you should compare those changes to your competitors, as this will best show how strong your site’s authority is relative to the sites you’re competing against in the SERPs. We take updating our metrics very seriously, and our last major update to the model was 7 years ago. Users of Domain Authority and Page Authority can expect us to continue to produce steady, reliable metrics for the long haul, and only make changes to these metrics when we believe the benefits dramatically outweigh the stability of the metric. Is Moz's backlink checker.... just... not good?
Hey everyone! Can somebody explain to me why this keeps happening: Whenever I'm trying to backlink my competitors, I typically use RavenTools. Every time, without fail, if I put that same URL into Moz's Open Site Explorer - It gives me about 1/20th of what RavenTools shows me. Sometimes it literally comes up with 2 or 3 links total. Unfortunately, RavenTools has a cap on how many backlink checks you can perform in a month - so once I've used those up, I have to start using OSE... But, it just doesn't work. Does anyone else have this issue? Thanks!

Moz crawling bot
Hi guys, in OpenSiteExplorer -> Top Pages, there are no page titles displayed in a raport for certain domain, and "HTTP Status" column shows: "Blocked by robots.txt". I tried to find out what the ID of Moz crawling bot is, and on this page: http://moz.com/community/q/seomoz-spider-bot-details someone says it's: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; rogerBot/1.0; http://www.seomoz.org/dp/rogerbot). However, my robots.txt doesn't have such entry.
