Google Image Search - Is there a way to influence the related icons at the top of the image search results?
-
Google recently added related icons at the top of the image search results page. Some of the icons may be unrelated to the search. Are there any best practices to influence what is positioned in the related image icons section? Thank you.

Don't have an exact date, but the UI feature is relatively new. I agree with @effectdigital that this is a general capability that Google has been building/expanding for a while. It's helpful to look at that underlying logic, as it will spawn new features over time.

I don't personally think so, but some will disagree. It's existed on a functional level (Google drawing relationships between trending entities, and what images it should show) for many years. Throughout the years there have been various search experiments which make some of this information visible to Google's end users, but this is the first one in a long time which has gained any kind of usage
The technology is probably highly related to Google's "people also search for" facility on their standard results, which seems to come and go over the years (sometimes remaining accessible to JS-disabled browsers, even when standard end-users can no longer access the technology)
Some will say it's shiny and new, certainly this particular implementation is a little green. Overall though, no it's not really new technology (just a new spin on it)

Thank you so much for the informative and detailed answer. Is the related image search a new feature in the results?
-
Yes there is, in fact there's a way to influence ALL of the images which are displayed, but it's usually costly and time-intensive
For example, look at this Google search query:
https://www.google.com/search?q=frozen&tbm=isch
... this used to contain loads of pictures of frozen foods and frozen landscapes. Now it's all about a Disney movie! Another good query is "Matrix" which (for image results) used to be very technical, but for over a decade it's been dominated by the Matrix movie franchise
If you create such an online storm, that you 'become' the trend, you can 'take over' Google's image results. Sometimes this only lasts a short while, sometimes it lasts well over 10 years
The 'related' images that run along the top (which can sometimes be derivatives, e.g: 'related movies', or instead they can be search narrowing facilities, e.g: 'frozen foods' as opposed to the generic 'frozen' results) - can be influenced. Usually the related images, are 'runner up' trends that didn't quite manage to dominate Google's results, yet which still count as distinct and highly popular search entities
This one is quite a good example: https://www.google.com/search?tbm=isch&q=automobile - there are related images for specific vehicles, titans in the automobile industry (Henry Ford) / historic, even stuff like 'vector' which covers digital automobile art
Your best bet at influencing which things appear along the top, is to influence which commonly-related pictures people ALSO search for when they use Google. Unfortunately, that's not easy at all and often involves colossal production and / or marketing budgets which extend offline in a big way

Question About Permalink Showing Up in Search Results
Does Google determine how your permalink shows up in the search results or is that a setting on our end? I noticed most of our competitors have their permalink show up in their snippet results. Ours shows "knowledgebase" instead. I think seeing the keywords in the permalink helps with conversions. https://screencast.com/t/fyFyNaWayajx

Blocking Dynamic Search Result Pages From Google
Hi Mozzerds, I have a quick question that probably won't have just one solution. Most of the pages that Moz crawled for duplicate content we're dynamic search result pages on my site. Could this be a simple fix of just blocking these pages from Google altogether? Or would Moz just crawl these pages as critical crawl errors instead of content errors? Ultimately, I contemplated whether or not I wanted to rank for these pages but I don't think it's worth it considering I have multiple product pages that rank well. I think in my case, the best is probably to leave out these search pages since they have more of a negative impact on my site resulting in more content errors than I would like. So would blocking these pages from the Search Engines and Moz be a good idea? Maybe a second opinion would help: what do you think I should do? Is there another way to go about this and would blocking these pages do anything to reduce the number of content errors on my site? I appreciate any feedback! Thanks! Andrew

Why differents browsers return different search results?
Hi everyone, I don't understand the reason why if I delete cookies, chronology, set anonymous way surfing in Chorme and Safari, I have different results on Google. I tried it from the same pc and at the same time. Searching in google the query "vangogh" the internet site "www.vangogh-creative.it" is shown in the first page in Chrome but not in Safari. I asked in Google webmaster forum, but nobody seems to know the reason of this behavior. Can anyone help me? Thanks in advance. Massimiliano

Is there an automated way to test what HREFLANG is ranking for in google and yandex?
Hi everyone, We implemented HREFLANG code for our international sites. We are wondering is there an automated way to test is HREFLANG is working vs. manually browsing in each international search engine? Also, we implemented this a few days ago, and google webmaster tools stlil hasn't picked up that we have it implemented. I've heard it taking anywhere from 2-8 days. At what point would we see results. our site is http://www.datacard.com Is there an order that the site listings have to follow, for example should x-default be the last item listed? Thanks, Laura

OK but what about images that show in search (we have a lot of our images show up high in relevant google image search) will this method work the same or should we do something else to keep the image benefits? many thanks Tom

Does including your site in Google News (and Google) Alerts helps with SEO?
Based on the following article http://homebusiness.about.com/od/yourbusinesswebsite/a/google-alerts.htm in order to check if you are included you need to run site:domain.com and click the news search tab. If you are not there then... I ran the test on MOZ and got no results which surprised me. Next step according to :https://support.google.com/news/publisher/answer/40787?hl=en#ts=3179198 is to submit your site for inclusion. Should I? Will it help? P.S.

Google + pages and SEO results...
Hi, Can anyone give me insight into how people are getting away with naming their business by the SEO search term, creating a BS Google + page, then having that page rank high in the search results. I am speaking specifically about the results you get when you Google: "Los Angeles DUI Lawyer". As you can see from my attached screenshot (I'm doing the search in Los Angeles), the FIRST listing is a Google + business. Strangely, the phone number listed doesn't actually take you to a DUI attorney, but rather to some marketing group that never answers the phone. Can anyone give me insight into why Google even allows this? I just find it odd that Google cares so much about the user experience, but have the first result be something completely misleading. I know it sounds like I'm just jealous (which I am, a little), but I find it disheartening that we work so hard on SEO, and someone takes the top spot with an obvious BS page. UupqBU9

Google Said "Repeat the search with the omitted results included."
We have some pages targeting the different countries but with the Near to Similar content/products, just distinguished with the country name etc. one of the page was assigned to me for optimizing. two or three Similar pages are ranked with in top 50 for the main keyword. I updated some on page content to make it more distinguish from others. After some link building, I found that this page still not showing in Google result, even I found the following message on the google. "In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 698 already displayed.

If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included." I clicked to repeat omitted result and found that my targeted url on 450th place in google (before link building this was not) My questions are Is google consider this page low quality or duplicate content? Is there any role of internal linking to give importance a page on other (when they are near to similar)? Like these pages can hurt the whole site rankings? How to handle this issue?0
