What is the relationship between inbound links and linking domains?
-
In doing competitor research, there's a specific competitor that has fewer linking domains, but dramatically more inbound links. How do these two relate to each other? I do have a higher domain authority and more internal followed links with them having more internal nofollow and external (both follow and nofollow) links. I'm trying to understand how they can have 3.7k linking domains and 4.8 million inbound links while I have 4.1k linking domains and only 601k inbound links. What really defines an inbound link and what's there relationship between inbound links and linking domains?

Quality over quantity... Always a good thing.
I work on this constantly but get overwhelmed with all the information. How to you prioritize your tasks to ensure you are efficiently getting quality backlinks?
-
Yes – Inbound links are a ranking factor.
No – Quantity of inbound links is not a ranking factor. To be clear, this just means increasing your raw number of backlinks won’t help you, especially if the links are low-quality.
However, there is one way that quantity can matter: having tons of great links is always better than having a small number of great links.
Yes – Relevance and quality of the referring domain is a ranking factor.
There is no direct correlation between the number of outbound and inbound link ratios, although you can imagine the more outbound links on a page the more the link juices you're spreading away from a page.
-
@grayloon one linking domain can have multiple inbound links. When you are reviewing competitors' backlinks profiles, focus on linking domains to scout for opportunities to build links within your niche.
Also, it is worth thinking about the inbound traffic from these websites before building links. It is the quality not the number of links that will matter.

Unsolved Google results linking domains
When I check the linking domains of a root domain, a lot of Google results from other countries appear. Does this mean all of these domains are linking to my root domain? Can anybody explain this and tell me if this can be seen as spam or not? linking-domain-moz.png

Unsolved Inbound Links Sudden Decline
Hi,
Link Explorer | | Jane090987
There is a question of my site that the number of linking domains has experienced a sudden decline - lost inbound links for around 100k in several days.
We are wondering the reason of this sudden decline, is it a common fluctation or is there some problems in our site? Thanks for your answers in advance!0 -

# of links and how it impacts ranking
Hi everyone I was running a competitor analysis in Moz Pro of my site and 3 competitors that are ranked above me. One of the things I noticed is that my # of total links is very high compared to 2 of my competitors(please see attachment). Other seo tools are telling me the same. This is mainly due to a few affiliate sites that have us in their footer. I was wondering if this could impact our ranking if some of these sites have very low domain authority and have thousands of backlinks to our site? I am looking into starting the disavowing process. Internal/External link ratio
I have a client who ranked #3 for a very important and highly competitive keyword phrase. Using the 'Compare Pages' tool in open site explorer I could see that we were far better optimized than the two websites that were out ranking my client. Our PA was higher, the MozRank was higher, more internal and external links (and the external are all high quality) more linking C blocks etc.. etc... not just the page but the website, in general, was better optimized. The one thing I did notice was that although we had more internal and external links, our ratio was far heavier to the external side than the ratio of either competitor. So, at a loss of what else to do, I went through the website and beefed up the internal links to the specific page in question. I didn't over do it, just moved up from about 6% to about 12% (one competitor was at about 20% while the other was about 65%). Six days later we are number two rather than number three. Coincidence? Should I beef it up even more? Has anyone ever come across anything like this? Thank you for your comments in advance.

Links in the independent.co.uk
So I was doing some research in OSE and come across links in different articles on the independent.co.uk. There are more than three but I have included three below. Do a find for "blinds" on the articles. What I find interesting is that each article has a different author. Which probably rules out a friend doing a favour. As far as I can see, of all the many different types of advertising programmes the Independent has, this is not one of them. Which begs the question, how are they getting these links? http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/ashcroft--belize-the-only-thing-he-respects-is-dollars-1811725.html http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/house-and-home/gardening/shooting-stars-a-new-book-by-anna-pavord-pays-homage-to-the-glorious-bulb-1785219.html http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/reviews/outbreak-1939-imperial-war-museum-london-1776002.html What do you think?

How does a site get to no 3 in Google with no KW in their links?!!
Hello everyone, my first post - ahhh I'm investigating a niche and there is a site that should have no right being there in my view. It's no. 3 Google UK for 'company formation' with a small site with 65 weak links from only 7 domains and hosted in the US. But more importantly, the Open Site Explorer says there is not 1 link with that term in its anchor text. This I find crazy and makes me suspicious. But before I go back to my client saying "oh they must be black hat" I would like your expert views. I'm not sure whether to tut or congratulate them and for the first time I'm not sure what reasons to give for their amazing performance! What's your views?

Viewing Specific Links in OSE - For a Specific Month
(1) Can I use OSE to see the number of links per month a site acauired over the past year (month by month)? For example, I might be interested if I see a competitor acquired a surprisingly high number of links during December, 2010. (2) Can I use OSE to see the a list of links a site acquired during a specific time, such as December of 2010? For example, if I see a competitor suddenly acquired an unusually high number of links in December, 2010, I'd like to see a list of those links, to figure out how they acquired those links. Thanks!
