We are starting a new travel guide for a resort town. I have bought an expired domain with decent related links and PR (which seems to have survived the transfer (4 months ago).

Beofre we launch the new site I am trying to decide if we should use this expired domain as the primary URL for the new site or just do a permanent redirect and buy a new domain that better matches the theme of the site. I am obviously concerned with starting from scatch with a new domain. I am confident we can build some good rellevant links in a short time but this space is very competetive.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I think you should consider how successfully you can fold-in the old domain (name)  into the brand you want to create. Domain names as anchor text isn't that big of a think anymore--looking forward, the brand is more important thing.  If you think you might look back in a year or two and say "this domain name is just not working for us as part of our brand message" I'd go with the new domain.

It's a factor, but not the only one. I wouldn't mind: it's already a win that you can create extra authority from the old domain.
In short term, it's more interesting to keep the old domain name. In the long term it's more interesting to have the new more relevant one, kickstarted with (301) links from the old one.

It's a preference, there's no right or wrong here. If going for the long term, relevance is my number one choice. You should see the old domain as a gift to kickstart it.

What about the fact that the new domain is not "aged" as opposed to the other domain?

The themes are close but not perfect...they should help, especially as we round out with other new links.

Depends. If your domain name isn't that relevant for you business, I would buy the new domain name and do a 301 redirect. That way you can still profit from the authority of the old domain name. You won't get everything, but it will still kickstart your new domain.

Relevance is everything. You don't want to change domain names later on.

If you can get a better domain name, I'd do that because whatever domain name you go with will be referred to all over the place and if the name isn't a great fit with you, it isn't ideal.

I'd say it's not the domain name that's as much of an immediate issue as the link anchor text and the theme of the pages those links are on.  If those are not relevant to your site, and you have a domain name that is more appropriate to your business, I'd go with the new domain--I'm not even sure I'd do a redirect, in that case.  If the links are relevant and of decent quality, I think I'd go ahead and use the expired domain.

Is an iframe redirect on the same Domain bad for SEO

Good morning. We have a vendor that has created a landing page with content  that we want to use.  Because of the way we built the site, the only way to use the content is to create an i-frame.  The i-frame is re-directingon the same Domain.  Would we benefit from the SEO Content?

Move domain to new domain, for how much time should I keep forwarding?

I'm not sure but my website looks like is not getting it's juice as supposed to be. As we already know, google preferred https sites and this is what happened to mine, it was been crawling as https but when the time came to move my domain to new domain, I used 301 or domain forwarding service, unfortunately they didn't have a way to forward from https to new https, they only had regular http to https, when users clicked to my old domain from google search my site was returned to "site does not exist", I used hreflang at least that google would detect my new domain been forwarding and yes it worked but now I'm wondering, for how much time should I keep the forwarding the old domain to the new one, my site looks like is not going up, I have changed all the external links, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Canonical Question: Root Domain Geo Redirects to SubFolder.

Howdy, Working on a larger eComm site that 302s you based on your location. With that in mind should I canonicalize the final page. domain.com => 302 => domain.com/us/, domain.com/fr/, etc... (Should these all have a canonical pointing to the root domain.com?

How do I list the subdomains of a domain?

Hi Mozers, I am trying to find what subdomains are currently active on a particular domain. Is there a way to get a list of this information? The only way I could think of doing it is to run a google search on; site:example.com -site:www.example.com The only issues with this approach is that a majority of the indexed pages exist on the non-www domain and I still have thousands of pages in the results (mainly from the non-www). Is there another way to do it in Google? OR is there a server admin online tool that will tell me this information? Cheers, Dan

                        DNS or 301 Website Redirect

We are running a marketplace site, so we have thousands of vendors selling their products on our site. Each vendor has a Profile page and we are soon to launch a premium store-front that is white label. Many of these vendors will want to point a custom url to their premium store-front (which is a sub domain of the marketplace) and we are trying to get an understanding of how we should instruct them to point their url in a way that will give the main marketplace site the seo juice. We also want to understand what will show up in the address bar.  Will it be their url or our sub domain? Will any of the marketplace seo juice boost their url local listing status?

SEO value in multiple backlinks from same domain and from various sub-domains.

A site has a link to my site as one of their main tabs, which means whenever a user clicks through to another page within the site, my link - being a main tab - is there. This creates thousands of links from this site. How does Google treat this? Do we have a rough formula estimate. In other words, assume it creates 1,000 backlinks would the SEO value be around the same as if I had just 2 link total as a main tab, but on 2 different non-related sites? Or, does it actually count fully as 1,000 links? Links from various sub-domains. Several .EDU's are linking to my site. Different schools within the overall same university. Example: nursing.abc.edu links to my site, but so does business.abc.edu. For SEO does that count as much as if I had links from complete non-related universities, or would Google evaluate that these links are related (since same main domain) and that will discount any links more than 1 to some extent? If discounted, then what do we estimate the discount to be? thank yoyu

My domain name is free with my service with yahoo but it expires every year and gets extended automatically as I continue service, how does this impact my seo efforts? I've heard that the search engines prefer sites to expire in 3 years or more? Is this a fact?
