SEO Considerations for merging two brand website into one
-
Hello fellow Mozzers,
We have two websites for two similar brands at my place of employment, the two brands currently serve slighly different products but could be held quite happily under one branded site. As part of a potential group merger into one sole brand, we will have to create one joined up website which will then feature all our products. The newly merged site will also have more scope to allow us to expand our product range where as currently one brand is kind of specific to a particular market due to its name.
So as part of the Merge, I have to consider the potential implications for our search traffic, as this is an integral part of our business.
Brand A - older, more authorative, great content, good organic positions - top 10 for pretty much all terms we favour.
Brand B - younger, but has more marketing scope due to name, still good site and lots of content.
Unfortunately Brand B has more in terms of potential lifespan, but is currently the less authorative of the two sites we run. it has lower DA and PR according to my Moz Analytics, a lower number of quality links and less content. In order to give the Brand B website the boost that is needed and in effect replace Brand A in the serps which has great organic positions, I need to make sure all bases are ticked for an action plan.
So far this is what I have.
- Transfer all exisiting Brand A web pages to Brand B website.
- Rel canonical all Brand A pages to now point to Brand B websites new pages.
- 301 redirect all pages on Brand A to Brand B during the transfer.
- Once 301 redirects are in place then request external sites to actually repoint to Brand B website for any links.
- Update xml Sitemaps
- Update any content that mentions Brand B to now be Brand A.
- resubmit sitemaps to Webmaster tools
- Update all social profiles
- Update all local search profiles and listings
- Update all review sites with new brand name / merge any with both brands
On a supplementary note for customer information, looking to also keep the older Brand A Home page up for a short time to help people understand the transition rather than a complete redirect which to our demographic could confuse and alienate people. Will also look to send a mass email to roughly 400K people informing them of the move abd how it affects them.
I have no doubt there will be some glaringly obvious additions, any further advice would be much appreciated.
Hope you are all well.
Tim

Are there any other considerations I may be missing when moving website?

These are great links and tips Thomas.
I particularly liked the infographic from Aleydasolis.
Thanks for the help!

Thank you Thomas, I am glad it was understandable, I have a habit of waffling on a bit when trying to explain things
What is your username so I can DM you the two domains privately.
Cheers in advance Tim.

Hi Tim,
I think you did a great job of writing everything out. Would you mind sharing your URL's with me via private message if you are uncomfortable sharing it here?
I would be very hesitant to tell you to merge sites without knowing what type of content they have.
However having said that Granger.com is a good example of a site that sells just about everything. The only common theme is industrial products. But those range so vastly that you can understand what I mean.
as far as the best way to do it take the domain with the most authority and keep that domain 301 redirect the other domain page by page to it.
Here is some information

let me know if this is enough information I'd be happy to field any questions.
All the best,
Thomas

ANSWER SEEN 'WITHIN THE QUESTION' BRACKET So you ask, why is the sky blue?
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | RedFrog
Well, the answer is not so simple; In the day-time, when it's clear and cloudless,
the sky is blue because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light.
When we look towards the sun at sunset, we see red and orange colours because the blue light has been scattered out and away from the line of sight. SEO Audit Strategy For A Complex Website?
I am looking for a list of SEO audit tools and strategies for a complex website. The things I am looking for include (but not limited to): finding all the subdomains of the website listing all the 301's, 302's, 404's, etc finding current canonical tags suggesting canonical tags for certain links listing / finding all current rel=nofollow's on the website listing internal links which use & don't use 'www.' finding duplicate content on additional domains owned by this website I know how to find some of the items above, but not sure if my methods are optimal and/or the most accurate. Thank you in advance for your input!

Novice Question - Can Browsers realistically distinguish words within concatenated strings e.g. text55fun or should one use text-55-fun? What about foreign languages especially more obscure ones like Finnish which Google Translate often miss-translates?
I am attempting to understand what is realistically possible within Google, Yahoo and Bing as they search websites for KeyWords. Technically my understanding is that they should be able to distinguish common words within concatenated strings, although there can be confusion between word boundaries when ambiguity is involved. So in the simple example of text55fun, do search engines actually distinguish text, 55 and fun separately? There are practical processing, databased and algorithm limitations that might turn a technically possible solution into a unrealistic one at a commercial scale. What about more ambiguous strings like stringsstrummingstrongly would that be parsed as string s strummings trongly or strings strummings trongly or strings strumming strongly? Does one need to use dashes or underscores to make it unambiguous to the search engine? My guess is that the engine would recognize the dash or space and better understand the word boundaries yet ignore the dash or underscore from an overall concatenated string perspective. Thanks in advance to whoever can provide any insight to an old coder who is new to this field.

Hot to move 3 websites into 1 SEO wise and recover from penaltys in the process?
I decided to migrate 3 EMDs and all of its content into 1 big new website. 1.) I will manually move each page/post to the new website, on new hosting. 2.) Redirect each old url to new via htaccess (how long do I have to wait before I simply change DNS records on my old domains, and just point it to the new domain - want to drop one hosting plan in the process) 3.) Tell Google via Webmaster tools, that my site has moved to the new domain. Website A suffered from Penguin update, Website B suffered from EMD update and Website C is OK. I removed most of "bad" and "exect anchor text" links from websites. Could I just move the content, change DNS records and tell Google that my website moved. Any thoughts, advices and pointers are appreciated. Tnx Marko Strbac

Website Is In Tables
Our website www.accupos.com is mainly created with TABLES, which I've heard is a practice from Neanderthal times. Nevertheless, it is my job as the new Dir. of Marketing to SEO the hell out of it. Would you recommend converting the ENTIRE website into Divs or changing the current Tables situation? Or is this not a big deal for SEO? The site APPEARS fine, but I want to get our keywords ranked as well as possible, putting my time in the most efficient places (like link building!). How much of a high priority might this Tables fix be? We are also running an AdWords campaign spending LOTS every month. Please Moz me! Derek

Website rebranding, what should I worry about?
Hey guys, A client of mine will be doing a rebranding exercise, this include changing their brand name and their domain name. They are considered a well known brand within their industry (Their brand name shows up in Google's "Search Related to..." section) My question is: Apart from making sure all 301 are put in place, changing all the links to point to the new domain and doing PR exercise, is there anything else I should keep in mind / be aware of to ensure a smooth transition? Also can anyone come up with possible issues we might encounter during the move? Apart from having a significant drop in traffic and rankings? Thanks, Clement

What To Do For A Website That is Mainly Images
I have a website that is a desktop wallpaper script. People can come and upload 100's of wallpapers to share with the community. This is were the problems comes in. Files are normally called 27636dark.jpg or whatever and come with no description. This leads to 2 things. no text content that google can use to know what the page/image is about. Meta descriptions, URL's just look like spam. Example: /car-wallpapers/7636dark.jpg If a text description was added, it would still only be like "Green Trees in the distance". Which as you may guess, with 1,000's of wallpapers... would end up having a lot of descriptions the same. Is there any advice for sites that focus on image driven content?
