This is only meant to be a discussion. Is he legit? Is he too blackhat and the next update may make him a lot less relevant? Is he worth paying attention to?

I say go for it and test it to see what sort of traction you can gain with it. Personally I wouldn't do it for a client website or anything but it would make a neat project to test out.

I most want to see if buying aged domains with a bunch of backlinks and then repurposing them into blogs still works to create an authority website.

Look at the wayback machine on that.

Not necessarily, it depends on how you look at it. His specific site brings value to others looking to optimize and learn SEO. You can apply those same techniques to a blog on a subject you feel passionate about to test out some of his techniques.

At first glance, he seems like a sketchy affiliate marketer. However, I could be wrong. If you want to find out if he is legit you could always purchase a domain and try out some of his techniques and see how they work and if Google destroy's your new site.
Could be a fun experiment.
