Custom URL's with Bigcommerce Issue (Is it worth it?)
-
We're building out a store in Bigcommerce, who for all intensive purposes is perfect for SEO besides the fact that you can not change the URL's to be custom. My question is, does this kill the SEO value of bigcommerce, despite everything else being great?
So for example the URL's for a category page would be something like this www.mysite.com/categories/keyword and the product URL's are pulled in by product name, so product URL's could be something like www.mysite.com/products/Product-Description-Long-223.html (notice the words will be capitalized and their is no way to remove the trailing .html)
I could go with Interspire (the liscenced version of Bigcommerce) or Magento so I can custom edit this stuff. But then its a lot more work for my employee's on the buildout.

Thanks, yea I can use canonicals with bigcommerce. I just wasn't sure how much the URL structure really influences the rankings of the page. Like if everything else is perfect, but there is one variable in there that isn't (ie having /categories/ in the URL) how much that would actually effect the results.

The question that matters is what does SEO need from URLs?
-
That they be static.
-
That they feature your keywords.
What does Big Commerce do?
-
Provide static URLs (at least, based on what you've shown; I'm not a salesman or anything and have no affiliation)
-
Features product name (which presumably you control, and can thus include long tail KWs).
Granted, it's slightly less easy to type out the product page URLs for anyone wanting to link (they need to remember the caps and .html) but that's the least of your issues. I'd imagine you can just set up a 301 to make the urls typed in redirect if they get the casing wrong.
Lastly, regarding custom URLs, consider scalability. If the store succeeds ... are you really going to give each product page a custom URL manually? Not likely... So it's not that important.

My company has been working with eCommerce storefronts for close to 7 years and this would be a deal killer for me. Out of all the shopping carts on the Market, Magneto is HANDS DOWN the greatest and offers the most scalability for clients bar none! It is more complicated to setup than most but once you have the hang of it you can get a store built out really quick and in the end its just so much better.
I personally, have worked with infopia, zencart, yahoo stores, volution, channel advisor (crooks), 3Dcarts, pinnicle cart and more.
Bottom line, URL Structure in eCommerce is as crucial as Title and Meta Descriptions.

I think you have answered your question already. This comes down to price over SEO value. Sure, the perfect pretty URL's would add something to the product and category listings pages, but depending on the competition in your market and the ongoing budget for Link Building this may not be an issue if you're on top of it all.
If you'd rather outlay a little more cost upfront, then it might be an idea to get it 100% from day 1
Hope this helps!!

Drupal Domain Access SEO Issues
I'm working with a new developer to redesign several Drupal sites and have 3-4 sites with similar designs and modules. The developer is keen on using Drupal Domain Access to make maintenance and sharing user information easier. Each site currently has a unique domain and content (although the sites are in related niches). Are there issues from an SEO perspective with the Drupal Domain Access Module? With only one instance of Drupal on the backend will Google somehow not view these as independent sites? Thanks for any info!

Website Form Doesn't Work for Visitors from Google Search App
I've got a strange issue where if visitor is viewing a website from within the Google Search App, the app doesn't seem to be able to handle online forms. The form relies users on entering data, which is then POSTed to an external booking engine site. Normally this works fine, except when Google Search App is acting as the browser, the post payload is empty and the URL breaks. We're a bit stumped as to how to move forward. So far the only lead is that Android users can override having the app behave as a browser - but doesn't seem like iOS users can. Any additional ideas/tips are welcome here - thanks. 🙂

Shortened URL is breaking when URL is in Upper Case
Hi there, Currently I'm having some troubling mitigating an odd occurrence with some redirected shortened URLs being in upper case. Here is how they should be behaving - www.rhinosec.com/webapp -> https://rhinosecuritylabs.com/landing/sample-report-webapp-pentest/
Web Design | | BCaudill
www.rhinosec.com/network -> https://rhinosecuritylabs.com/landing/sample-report-network-pentest/
www.rhinosec.com/se -> https://rhinosecuritylabs.com/landing/social-engineering-example-report/ but when the /______ is capitalized - for example - WEBAPP, NETWORK, SE; WordPress either gives me a 404 or guesses the pages and lands on: NETWORK = https://rhinosecuritylabs.com/assessment-services/network-penetration-testing/
SE = https://rhinosecuritylabs.com/assessment-services/secure-code-review/
WEBAPP = 404 I was wondering if this discrepancy should be taken care of in the Htaccess file, Cloudflare, or WordPress redirect plug-in?0 -
Analytics year to year comparisons when Url extensions change?
We manage a website which we recently changed from Drupal to Word Press. In the change, we dropped a small part of the previous URLs - the end extension - .php For example /attractions-rates.php is now
Web Design | | Teamzig
/attractions-rates with no .php. We eliminated the .php to make the URL simpler. How is it possible (and easiest) to do a year to year comparison as Google sees the pages as different? They didn't for the first 8 days (we could see both) but now the pages with the .php extension shows zeros. The content of the page is exactly the same only the .php is different. We know we can manually go back to last year's reports and do side by side but that is time consuming. Hoping there is a filter or process we can use to gen a report? Thanks, Jim0 -
What is the longest you would go back to ressurrect links that should have been 301's?
I have never thought of anything beyond a site that was possibly developed a month or two ago, but an interesting possible client has come along and begs a question. They had their site "redesigned" in April 2014 and it appears whomever did the work did not realize what a 301 was for. Using ahrefs or MajesticSEO, they have gone from roughly 15,000 referring pages to 500 and the time line perfectly intersects the redesign. Sooooo, just wondering if any of you geniuses has ever gone back that far to try and pull off a 301.... I am actually just thinking of a link building / content marketing plan but thought it was an interesting question. Thanks for the help, Robert

Is it worth upgrading php to accomodate new WP version?
my client revisitors.com has a blog blog.revisitors.com that we cannot update to a newer WP version 3.5.1 because his php version apparently must be upgraded first. You cannot update because WordPress 3.5.1 requires PHP version 5.2.4 or higher. You are running version 5.1.6. according to client it would be potentially hazarardous for him to upgrade the php but we cant update or add new plugins because we arent running the current version of WP what is worse? i am responsible for his blog but i feel handicapped bigtime - at the same time i dont want him to do something that could wreck his site functionality either any suggestions? or advice here? thanks

Should I Remove URL extentions for SEO?
We are having a developer design our website with Magento. I noticed the main pages such as About Us have no file extention in the URL. But the product pages have a .html file extention. I was once told to remove the file extentions. Are there benefits to removing the .html file extension and if so, is there a way we can do this using Magento?
