Keyword Diversity: What Does it Mean?
-
I recently read this awesome article by Ian Lurie on the Portent blog: http://www.portent.com/blog/analytics/seo-analytics-middle-earth-style.htm
However, I keep getting stumped by what he means under the "Grade Yourself" section by "keyword diversity." Of course, I've tried to ask him, but he hasn't yet responded. Besides, I like to get the opinion of the SEOMoz crowd anyway.
So what is "keyword diversity"?
- Is it the total number different link texts out there linking to my site?
- The total number of keywords I'm actively tracking and optimizing for?
- The total number of phrases for which I rank in a Google search engine (if it's even possible to know that)?
Thanks,
Benjamin

Personally, I don't go by score. I go by content and what's best for the user and what's most "matched" or "alike" so it reads naturally. My intention isn't to sound smug, but when writing content, I can tell when it's stilted and the same word is used over and over (both my reading and doing a count of it) vs using variations of it. Also, there's tools that I use to at least get an indication if Google might think something's up (i.e., not diverse enough).
Also, my site isn't about one topic - we have a few core things, but we sell more than 30,000 SKUs so it's easier to be more diverse, even if there are similar variations (arc flash labels, cable labels, etc.) which makes it easier.
I track my site/words in a spreadsheet so I can make sure we're not optimizing the pages for the same words and competing against ourselves.
As for backlinks, that can get a bit trickier because I have less control on how people select to link to our site. For that, I monitor and when I feel it's needed, make suggestions and/or collaborate with other sites. (Keep in mind I have 50,000+ pages.)

So how would you go about assigning a score or a rank to your site's keyword diversity? For example, when would you say that a site's keywords are "too diverse" or "not diverse enough"?
-
It's all of those. Those are all ways you seem too fake and "perfect" and it flags Google. Similar phrases (ex: labels, labeling, labeling printers, identification labels, etc.) are all more natural variations of each other that hit home the essential core message (we're know labels!) in a more natural way than having just the word "label" everywhere.

Alternative tools for Keyword Traffic
Hi There, Wondering if anyone has any other tools they would recommend using for finding out keyword traffic on websites. Currently (and I'm sure like most), my website is connected to Google Analytics and Google Search Console. My biggest frustration becomes the "(not set)" variable that appears when I go to review the keywords section. It's always such a large number and I have no way of finding out what people might be typing in and coming across my website. Of course, I understand the privacy factor as to why Google must do this but it's certainly difficult to analyze what's working and what's not. Any tips, tricks or suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks, Lindsay

Where to find "Keywords that Sent Organic Search Visits" in Google Analytics?
Hi everyone, Tried searching for this answer but couldn't find it. In the new analytics, I can see that there is a graph that shows the number of unique keywords that brought traffic to our site sorted by weeks. I can't seem to find this data in Google Analytics. I can only find the number of visits but not sorted by how many keywords, instead it is just # of visits from all of the keywords. Thanks in advance. SZ

Massive decrease in search volumes from Keyword planner
The search volumes that I'm getting out of Keyword planner are approximately 10% (some as low as 1%) of the search volumes for the same keywords back in April. Is there something I missed in this time? I'm using the same account, same language and location settings. Anyone have an explanation for this? To be honest these new search volumes sound a lot more plausible to me - I'm just intrigued by what might have happened!

Google Analytics Organic Search Keywords Suddenly Displaying FulL Urls
In my Google Analytics, the top keywords for Organic Search are suddenyl displaying full URLs. For example, now the third and fourth keywords are http://www.domain.com/highly-specific-URL. These have all started recently around the same day, July 12th. I've checked back, and we've made no internal changes to the site around that time that could affect this. Any thoughts on this? Thanks! P.S. It might be related to rich snippets, but I cannot tell at this point.

How come de results from the old Google Keyword Tool are so different from the results from the keyword planner?
When I insert the keyword 'IT jobs' with Belgium as country and Dutch as the language, there is a huge difference between the results in the keyword planner and the keyword tool. Keyword tool says 1,000,000 local searches per month Keyword planner says 590 local searches per month This is a really big difference and I don't know which results I should trust. Can anybody help me with this?

Can you filter referring keywords in Google Analytics by language?
Hi All! So yes, I know that you can see/filter the language that the computer or browser was set to (en-us, ru, fr, etc.), but if you look at the keywords used by visitors falling under "fr", some are in English. Is there any way to get, say, just the keywords in Russian - regardless of what the visitor's browser language was set to? Thanks! Aviva

Any updates regarding 'not provided' organic keyword referrals in Google Analytics?
I know that the encrypted searches done by people logged into their Google accounts is causing the error, is there any workaround or any update from Google as to IF they will give us our keyword data back? I'm currently losing data on about 20% of my daily searches . . .
