Duplicate Video within site
-
My questions is about duplicate video content. I haven't been able to get a clear understanding from reading the previous threads.
We are hosting our videos with Vimeo and embedding into our site.
I want to embed them in 2 locations - on our features page with Java (Can be seen here http://simpletexting.com/features/). I also want to embed them in our resource section so that we can link to them directly.
I am wondering what the best way to do this for SEO and whether there is a chance that google will penalize us for duplicate content? If leave out the videos on the features page in the XML sitemap, does that address the problem?
There are 2 threads I saw on the topic and they have somewhat conflicting opinion from the same person.
http://www.seomoz.org/q/duplicate-video-content-question --Duplicate video on the same site is not a problem
http://www.seomoz.org/q/duplicate-video-onsite-how-do-you-treat-this-in-sitemap -- Duplicate videos are a problem as google can recognize them as such due to audio wave patterns, video length etc.
Thanks

Thank you gentlemen.

Phil,
Can you point to a link that explains how they can extract the content of a video? Or is it just meta data? I haven't done video specific work in a while and would appreciate having a source to read / refer to...
-
Also - note the context of the two questions you referenced are different. One person wanted to scale the same video over multiple pages and get rich snippets for all those pages - This is doable but inadvisable.
The other context was someone asking if they can upload the same piece of content to two hosting platforms - which i generally don't advise as you can cannibalize your rankings.
-
Not entirely true. They do have the ability to pull out data from an encapsulated video file and work out where content is indentical. This isn't an issue, like you say, if the pages are different in other ways. But, Google can recognise when videos are unique vs duplicated
-
There isn't an issue with having the same video on two different pages, but there is an issue with uploading the same video twice and behaving as if it were different videos.
In your situation, I would recommend only having an XML video sitemap entry for the page where you want the rich snippet. Embedding the same video on two pages is not a problem
-
Google doesn't "read" the contents of a video file so it's all about the content on the page that is readable and how unique that is from page to page. If you have two pages displaying the same video, but where the text on those two pages is sufficiently unique, there's no problem from an SEO perspective.

Do I need to use a CNAME for wistia video hosting?
I'm using Wisita for video hosting. My strategy is to allow other sites to embed videos to get links - I want the video linking back to my site not wistia or the embeding site. Do I need to use the Wistia CNAME or is a wistia subdomain acceptable?

Where To Add New Content In Site URL?
I'm planning to add a new section to the website that will increase visitor traffic and social sharing by using regularly updated video content. I'm thinking of adding the videos to YouTube and Vimeo as their own channels and then host those videos on the site aswell using a cloud storage solution. Is this a good overall strategy? Where would I add it in the URL so it generates the most SEO benefit for the whole website? www.mysite.com/new-section www.new-section.mysite.com

Video SEO, should I do what Roger does?
As per http://www.seomoz.org/blog/hosting-and-embedding-for-video-seo I want to rank with a rich snippet and improve my domain's overall ranking. So I am going to ignore YouTube and use Vimeo Pro (using old embed code). I will also submit a video XML sitemap and implement schema markup. Gotcha. Now let's check this strategy with what SEOmoz is doing. Let's take 5 Steps to Facebook Advertising - Whiteboard Friday it was uploaded onto the SEOmoz blog on 29 March 2013. Then on 4 April 2013 it was uploaded onto YouTube. As at 7 April 2013 (PST) I am not seeing the latest SEOmoz Whiteboard Friday Evolution of the Local Algorithm - Whiteboard Friday posted on YouTube. SEOmoz blog has a person written transcription, YouTube has an automatic transcript. There is a link to the SEOmoz comments below the YouTube Video. Cricky! They've gone all YouTube. Stop the boat. Or should I? My assumption is that SEOmoz is big enough so that it is willing to risk losing a few links to their YouTube webpages. Indeed they delay posting the video on YouTube for a week after it has been posted on the SEOmoz blog. What's more it ensures that there is a very good transcript on their blog. Top that off with comments (and I assume video sitemap and schema) and it is happy it will gain more from the traffic generated from the YouTube community than the potential loss of links to its domain, forgoing potential domain authority increases and resulting traffic. So Roger, I'm a little boat not a SEOmoz battleship cruiser, should I do what you do and wait for a week before I put my videos on YouTube? Or avoid the dangerous currents of YouTube stealing my domain authority and ignore YouTube all together?

Will hosted videos be indexed and pulled into search results if a video sitemap is submitted, but the video itself is in an iframe?
We're working with a client to create and submit a video site map. All of their videos are on separate pages, with unique copy, etc. The problem is that the videos may have to be within an iframe. Will this be an issue with regards to being included in video and universal search results? Or will the video site map take care of it? While we're on the topic of video site maps, does anyone know conclusively what the best thumbnail size is? Google has conflicting information, one resource says 160 x 120, and another says 120 x 90. Thanks in advance!

How should I resolve duplicate Google Places listings?
I am doing work for a local business who has duplicate Google Places listings. I would like some input from those with experience in this as to how I should go about consolidating these listings. Listing 1 created ~3 years ago by someone in the local business. They don't have the login/password info for this listing. listing has inaccurate info, including the wrong url (it points to their old website which is no longer active, but redirects to the new site) 124 reviews associated with this listing listing is on 3rd page of Local Business results Listing 2 one year old All listing info is current and accurate and I have the login info 18 reviews associated with this listing listing is on 6th page of Local Business results Up until a week or two ago Listing 2 was ranked between 1-3 in the local business results along side the map. Listing 1 was ranked around #6. I assume that the duplicate listings with their conflicting info (different url's associated with each) hit some tripwire in Google and they have now been penalized. Does this sound correct? What is the best method for consolidating the two listings and reestablishing the ranking? Here are my thoughts, please let me know if there is a better way... gain access to Listing 1 by having the business claim/verify the listing update all info in Listing 1 so that it is current and accurate deactivate and/or delete Listing 2 Is this the best course of action? Thanks!
