Studies on influence of meta description on CTR
-
After having answered quite a lot of questions here, I figured it was about time to ask one of my own.
Can anybody point me to decent (experimental) research articles or blogs that actually show variations in meta descriptions influence the Click Through Rate (CTR) of searchers?
On dozens of websites on the internet it is stated that 'meta descriptions affect CTR', but (good scientific) sources for those statements are nowhere to be found. The only research I can find that comes closest to providing any evidence is a translated study by dynamical.biz, which states that searchers LOOK a lot at the meta description, but this study (atleast in the translation) mentions nothing of searchers actually CLICKING it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Theo, did you ever find any more information on this? Would love to see anything you did find, as it is a topic others have asked about. Thanks!

For any type of test, remember that an engine doesn't necessarily show the meta description as the snippet in the SERP.

I also gave that a thumbs up, but I think that some of the claims about PPC tweaking are over-blown. I can see tremendous variation in CTR and conversions on my keywords WITHOUT making any changes. I think that people spend a lot of time making changes based on what is essentially random variation:
- Ad A is shown to 1000 people, 200 of whom are actually interested in buying the product
- Ad B is shown to 1000 people, 50 of whom are actually interested in buying.
Ad A will show a big edge in CTR and conversions, but this will have nothing to do with the content.

People were paying riduclus prices for houses here in Western Australia, now rthey wish they didnt. People tend to follow each other when spending money, if he is spending that much then its ok for me to do so, atitude.
This is how we get bubbles.
Having said that i dont know any other stats you could use, but I do think description is very important for conversion. -
Thanks a lot for the responses so far people! What I would like to use this data for is to back up the argument 'that good meta descriptions boost organic CTR' during a presentation. While I'm almost certain I'll find evidence that this is the case for ppc, I can't just generalize that data to organic seo. As kdaly100 suggested I'd think this is actually testable in a lab study. Present people with manipulated SERPS varying just one element at a time (meta description, title, url, etc.) and see what result gets the highest CTR. Strangely enough there doesn't seem to be any (public) studies that investigated this?
-
That's a great point from Daniel - Thumbs up! When people are paying for those words, you can bet the data is out there.
Scientific data for this kind of thing is tricky though, have you done testing of your own on your own projects? I have seen improvements for clients of around 30% with improved meta tags but it's very much a test, tweak, test, tweak, test, tweak (ad infinitum) process.
-
I havent seen any studies but you could create two pages with different meta and see the results. It is hard to be empirical with this I would think as Google now limits it to two lines but ther could be options for A/B studies that you could follow?
-
I wouldn't necessarily look for stats or studies about meta descriptions here, but look at research done on PPC copy as well. There is likely a whole lot more of it for one, and its a very similar concept. Which words get more clicks? That's what it boils down to. I'm sure if you look more for stats in the PPC side of things you can find more concrete sources on what language is most effective.

Deceptive site warning from Google: Java script and meta descriptions deployed.
Hi all, We received a deceptive site warning from Google recently. Seems like there is a deceptive content on some pages of the website. Some pages are removed from Google index. Meta descriptions have been deployed on the site few days ago. There is also java script on the website which we use for tracking visitors like GA. I wonder what's the reason for this alert? We believe its due to the Java script. Do you think meta descriptions will harm this bad? Any ideas? Thanks

Wouldn't it be great to add a visitor intent field in a keyword study ?
Hello everybody, With hummingbird update i think i understand that two pages like exclusive dating website chic dating services which could have been targeted on 2 different pages can now be targeted in a single one.
Search Behavior | | Sindicic_Alexis
In the end google is asking "Well... isn't an "exclusive" dating website the.. same as a "chic" one ? isn't it the same visitor intent which is triggered ? ". I'm building a new keyword study for one of my websites and i'm trying to be more in the "intent" point of view than in the "keyword" one. I've added a new column to my study which includes transactional / navigational and informational dropdown. I think this information is great but i feel that something is missing... I wonder if we could include a column which describes the real visitor intent in the form of a "user story"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_story for example : As a visitor i want to land on a page that proves that the company is only working with "exclusive" people.
-> We could optimise this page for all the "exclusive" "chic" "fancy" "elegant" "elite" keywords. Just a thought, i'd be really interested in knowing your point of view. Thanks a lot for your answers 🙂0 -
Vanish from google after choosing preferred domain and fixing 40 duplicate meta descriptions?
I recently followed 2 Google webmaster suggestions to clean up the on page SEO for our site. I chose a preferred domain 2 weeks ago(to www.website.com) and fixed the duplicate meta descriptions that our CMS was setting to unique and more natural descriptions for each page. I did that 3 days ago. Webmaster tools still says they are duplicates because it hasn't crawled the whole site yet. We have been fortunate enough to have some of our blog posts be covered by yahoo.com, cnet.com, huffingtonpost.com, gizmodo.com, etc. That is some major backlink juice and, as recently as 2 weeks ago, our website would be the #1 result when searching Google for "ourwebsite.com exact title of very popular blog post". Now it is on the 3rd page, and the top results are the websites that linked to our blog post. So....what gives? Is there a specific area I should look at? Our should I wait for Google to fully index our whole site now that changes have been made? It should be noted that our rankings have stayed the same in yahoo and bing. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Does the title attribute affect CTR?
I've been trying to find some research or studies regarding the title attribute on links and if it affects CTR or perhaps another benefit to using it. I know that it's not a factor in search engines and there's some problems with the compatibility of it in various devices and browsers, but looking for any stats that show using could affect your CTR. Would love some actual studies versus opinions, but haven't found any.

Meta description of homepage, changing to latest post
Here's something strange I noticed. The meta description for Engadget when doing a Google search is their latest blog entry. However, if you land on the homepage and view source the page, the meta description is a standard one for their homepage. My first impressions : Wha? How? and Wha? Could it be because it is a "news" site, Google goes "go on, have custom meta descriptions of your latest entry.." Thoughts?

Theme influence in your SERP
Hello SeoMoz community. I'm a new member here and i took the 30 day trial to test out your tools and to check if i find a need to them. I've a situation that is bugging my mind for a few days and i wish i had more data to have more accurate information. I have a website that stayed on first in my SERP for a competitive term. I did it with a very few links because i focused a lot on the UX (mostly on site performance & layout) and the outcome was a good usability for my site. Since the latest panda my site dropped from first to fifth and then came the Google dance between 5th and the 15th position. Then i decided to change the theme because i saw loads of problems like the page titles, i fixed loads of 301's and 404's, gave it a more clean UX, removed some ads and fixed some of the url's making them shorter and more accrued. This stopped the Google dance completely! And now the site is on the 10th position. I'm not complaining about the positions or panda updates or whatever happened. I just would like some comments on this situation. And i would like to ask if a theme update making the site better (better is a very complicated word in the SEO world know) can give negative feedback to the search engines? Thank you.

How long til meta robots noindex takes effect?
I have a wordpress site with about 3,000 posts and over 1,000 tags. All of the tag archives are currently indexed in Google and I don't want them to be. I just set the meta robots to no-index all the tag archives and was wondering how long it will take til they're out of the search engines? Since there are close to 1,500 of these and they are duplicate content it would be nice to have them gone asap. I noticed Webmaster Tools allows me to resubmit my site to index if my site has changed significantly... should I try that?? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!
