Reverse proxy a successful blog from subdomain to subfolder?
-
I have an ecommerce site that we'll call confusedseo.com. I created a WordPress blog and CNAME'd it to blog.confusedseo.com. Since then, the blog has earned a PageRank of 3 and a decent amount of organic traffic.
I am considering a reverse proxy to forward blog.confusedseo.com to confusedseo.com/blog/. As I understand it, this will greatly help the "link juice" of the root domain. However, I'm concerned about any potential harm done to the existing SEO value of the blog. What, if anything, should I be doing to ensure that the reverse proxy doesn't hurt my "juice" rather than help it?

Hey, I have a question in this:
We have setup a seperate Google Analytics ID and Google Search Console Property for the sub-domain and then if we are using reverse proxy to keep it under sub-directory.
So what happens to the GA tracking and Google Search Console in this case?

Hi there,
Im investigating the same reverse proxy solution for my eCommerce blog. was your implementation successful?
-
Canonical will pass link juice almost exactly like 301s will, so there's no harm in going that route. Matt Cutts explains that in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zW5UL3lzBOA
You sound like you're good to go. You've got duplicate content worked out, and you've got a plan to retain link juice (canonical).
-
Since the subdomain does still exist live, someone doing a reverse proxy would need to take some steps to mitigate duplicate content issues. The first would be to set up the new permalinks and rel canonical tags via Wordpress and Yoast's SEO plugin (which rocks, btw). Then you would need to do the robots.txt/GWT steps that you quoted. If there's anything else that needs doing, I am definitely all ears before I attempt this.
-
Ah! I misunderstood the bit about reverse proxying. In that case... to be perfectly honest, I'm not sure.
When you setup a reverse proxy, what happens to the sub-domain? Does it go away or does it still exist live? If it remains live, you'd end up with a duplicate content issue.
EDIT >> I found this at the source you linked to (which answers my question) -->
"The next thing you can do is add a robots.txt file to the sub-domain that stops robots from indexing it. As Reverse Proxying keeps the requested URL the /blog/ URLs will use the robots.txt from the main domain rather than the sub-domain.
The final (and most extreme) thing you can do is to register Google Webmaster Tools for the sub-domain and remove it from the index. If you are doing this, you need to do it in conjunction with robots.txt."

Thanks for your response, Philip. My research indicates that a 301 redirect on a location that is being reverse proxied would result in an infinite loop. (source) I haven't tested it to confirm, though. Is that true?
-
You need to setup 301 redirects for ALL of the pages and posts on the blog sub-domain to their new locations in the sub-folder. This is very important. Without the proper redirects in place, you will lose all value from links pointing to the blog sub-domain, plus all the history, authority, and rankings that the pages have earned.
As for your reasoning to move it from a sub-domain to a sub-folder, I'm not sure you'll receive any sort of link juice boost on your root domain from doing this. Maybe someone else can prove me wrong/correct me...

Dates in the blog posts - on, off or regularly updated
Hello Moz community, We have a blog where we post what we believe is very valuable, unique content for our niche. The content frequently stays very relevant for our visitor for many many years. In terms of both user engagement and SEO, should we keep the dates in our blog posts? Should we remove them? Should we go through every blog post and edit it slightly every week even if there is no meaningful information we can add? Should employ some kind of plugin that does update the blog post date automatically?

Are subdomains a good seo strategy for a multistore e-commerce?
Hi there I'm wondering what is the best strategy to work with multi-stores on magento: to use or not to use subdomains? Suppose we have the www.website.com and we configure it to use multistore. The url base will not have the store id on it so it will not be like www.website.com/store1 and www.website.com/store2. It will simply rely on the user session so if we have two categories for each store it will acces using: www.website.com/category1 (for store 1) www.website.com/category2 (for store 2) The homepage will allways be set on www.website.com so we should have a single page for several "home pages" (depending on the user session / store he is accessing). I guess this is not a good option if we want to rank for different keywords (for each store). So I was wondering if it is a good solution to set: store1.website.com store2.website.com This way we have 2 "home pages" each one able to rank. Does it make sense? Is it good or bad for seo? Another option I was considering was: www.website.com (for store 1) store2.website.com (for store 2) store3.website.com (for store 3) www.website.com/blog (for blog) Can this work? Good or bad for seo? best regards

Noindex Success?
Has anyone had success implementing noindex/follow to pages from their site which has been hit by a Panda penalty? Our site has a lot of duplicate content for products descriptions that we had permission to use from our distributor (who is also online). We went ahead and noindex/follow those pages in the hopes that google will focus on the products that we carry that do have original descriptions (about 1/3 of our products). We didn't want to just remove those products since they are actually beneficial to our customers. Most of the duplication of content is in the form of ingredients lists.

Effects of significant cross linking between subdomains
A client has noticed in recent months that their traffic from organic search has been declining, little by little. They have a large ecommerce site with several different categories of product - each product type has its own subdomain. They have some big megamenus going on, and the end result is that if you look in their Webmaster Tools for one of their subdomains, under Links to your Site, it says they have nearly 22 million links from their own domain! Client is wondering if this is what is causing the decline in traffic and wondering whether to change the whole structure of their site. Interested to hear the thoughts of the community on this one!

Duplicate title/content errors for blog archives
Hi All Would love some help, fairly new at SEO and using SEOMoz, I've looked through the forums and have just managed to confuse myself. I have a customer with a lot of duplicate page title/content errors in SEOMoz. It's an umbraco CMS and a lot of the errors appear to be blog archives and pagination. i.e. http://example.com/blog http://example.com/blog/ http://example.com/blog/?page=1 http://example.com/blog/?page=2 and then also http://example.com/blog/2011/08 http://example.com/blog/2011/08?page=1 http://example.com/blog/2011/08?page=2 http://example.com/blog/2011/08?page=3 (empty page) http://example.com/blog/2011/08?page=4 (empty page) This continues for different years and months and blog entries and creates hundreds of errors. What's the best way to handle this for the SEOMoz report and the search engines. Should I rel=canonical the /blog page? I think this would probably affect the SEO of all the blog entries? Use robots.txt? Sitemaps? URL parameters in the search engines? Appreciate any assistance/recommendations Thanks in advance Ian

Affects of multiple subdomains on homebrew CDN for images
We're creating our own CDN such that instead of serving images from http://mydomain.com/images/shoe.jpg It will appear at all of the following subdomains: http://cdn1.mydomain.com/images/shoe.jpg http://cdn2.mydomain.com/images/shoe.jpg http://cdn3.mydomain.com/images/shoe.jpg http://cdn4.mydomain.com/images/shoe.jpg Image tags on our pages will randomly choose any subdomain for the src. The thought was this will make page loading faster by paralellizing requests across many cookie-less domains. How does this affect : -Ranking of images on Google image search. -Ranking of pages they appear on -Domain authority (images are linked to heavily in our social media efforts, so we will 301 redirect image urls to cdn1.mydomain.com) Should we disallow all but one CDN domain in robots.txt? Will robots.txt on an image only subdomain even be retrieved? Should we just use 1 CDN subdomain instead?

Subdomain to Subcategory migration for an active news website blog
A very active news website has a very active blog as a sub-domain. For all good SEO reasons, they want to transfer the blog from a subdomain to a subcategory. Now, the issue is this blog is very active, updated daily and lots of people comment on it. So how should the website go about making this change while causing minimal seo loss and ensuring that the commenting process remains active and on going. A detailed answer would be much appreciated! Thanks! I cam accross this blog post that guides on how to change a subcategory to a subdomain: http://devilsworkshop.org/moving-a-wordpress-blog-from-a-subdirectory-to-subdomain-preserving-permalinks/. Any words on this would also be appreciated!
