International architecture: Country specific subfolders > domain mapping to tld
-
Hi
Ive got a clients dev saying they are setting up with country/language specific subfolders (as i recommended) BUT now they are saying they want to set up on network.domain.com (for example) and then each language will have its own sub-folder BUT will be domain mapped to the TLD as and when they get them.
I have asked them to clarify since sounds a bit strange since thought best to have domain.com then /uk and /us etc etc and sure ok to forward country specific TLD's to these subfolders. Its this new subdomain (network.) thats concerning me and mapping rather than forwarding (or is it the same thing) but anyone know off hand if above sounds ok or also thinks a bit strange or know issues with such a set up ?
many thanks
dan

This is all they are saying thus far, make any sense ?
We've set it up as network.domain.com so that every language site - including the UK version - can be subfoldered from one master place. So in actuality the UK site is www.domain.com/uk but it is domain mapped to the central URL www.domain.com

HI Andy
ive got another client going over to international targeting via browser location too, although that involves IP sniffing which can be a nightmare and cause all sorts of probs not helping anxiety levels
Good luck !
All Best

We are working on a client site at the moment which is all over the place, they have a different Wordpress instance for each language and have subdomains for each, usa.site.com, fr.site.com.
This makes it an absolute nightmare for updating, understanding analytic and managing. We are looking at moving them over to Magento and having just the site.com and showing the correct currency/language based on their browser location. With an override just in case.
I am not sure how this will impact rankings but from an onsite management and conversion perspective I know it will help.

i will do

I agree with you completely. When you get more information please post it. I am curious.

Thanks for your comment Vizergy !
i think so but asking them for clarification
if so though, i would have thought best to just fwd/redirect the tld to the subfolder (rather than the other way round)
i will find out what they mean and come back though
cheers

We have tested sub-folders vs. sub-domains with international clients in the same region of the same country - each received very similar SEO (on-page, links etc...) and found that neither appeared to work better than the other as far as ranking went. However I am not clear on what they mean by 'mapped to the TLD'. Are they saying that each language variant has its own TLD and that the sub-folder from the main TLD will redirect to it?

Is repurposing an old sub domain better than creating a new sub domain?
We have a good sub domain like** art.ourwebsite.com** which currently sells custom canvas art. We have owned the domain since 2013 but it has only been live for the past few weeks. We want to redesign & repurpose the page to continue to sell custom canvas art but will eventually include other merchandise like mugs, tshirts, etc which wouldn't be custom. Would it be best to keep art.ourwebsite.com since is a shorter/more memorible & older sub domain or would it be best to update the name to something that encompasses our new products? Our marketing team has suggested yourart.ourwebsite.com

Local site under generic domain
Howdy Mozers, We have main website on .com domain and local websites for each language like .es, .fr, .in etc. We decided to move all local sites under main domain .com using subdirectories with gTLDs. One of the local sites has a manual penalty. Right now we are redirecting local site which have penalty using 302 redirect. So my question is. Will 302 redirect hurt our main site? Is there any other way to redirect visitors from local site without passing penalty? We have few thousands monthly users who are still using local domain links to get to our site, so we can't remove redirect at all. Best Regards,

I've consolidated other domains to a single one with 301 redirects, yet the new domain authority in MOZ is much less that the redirected ones. Is that right?
I'm trying to increase the domain authority of my main site, so decided to consolidate other sites. One of the other sites has a much higher domain authority, but I don't know why after a 301 redirect, the new site's domain authority hasn't changed on over a month. Does MOZ take account of thes types of things?

Redirecting old domain to new domain with wordpress
Hi all, I need to change domain name to a website published on wordpress. I'd think to make these steps: trasferring the website (files+db) to a new hosting space to redirect old site (www.oldsite.com) to the new one (www.newsite.com) using rewrite rules. With these steps I'd need to transfer and reinstall files and wordpress so I would like to discover if there's some less time expending procedure to consider. Thanks and ciao Bob

Crawling a subfolder with a dev site
I am trying to set up a campaign where I am crawling a subfolder of our main site where I have dev version of the new site. However, even though the new site resolves and I have included the full resolving URL but the crawl results come back saying that only one page has been crawled. The site has had a protected block on it for a period of time but this has now been removed. Any ideas? Thanks Nick

Internal linking with Old Content
Hello, I have a sports website in which users write their opinions about the sporting events that take place every day throughout the year. Each of these sporting events generates a new page or URL indicating the match with date. For example: www.domain.com/baseball/boston-v-yankees-04-24-2012-1234.html The teams face several times a year, and each match creates a different URL or page. I would like to link old pages to new pages and vice versa. How would you recommend these pages to be linked? Linking them to each other or linking old pages to new pages that are generated or otherwise? I would appreciate your orientation and help in this case. Thank you.

Sub-domain dilema - variations
Hi All, We're creating a sub-domain for a new program launch on a client site and we need to choose the "right" sub-domain name that properly reflects the offering and hopefully keyword driven. The client is already using the preferred sub-domain name but until we get clarification that we can take it over, I'm doing my due diligence and expecting a worst case scenario in that we cannot use it. The current preferred sub-domain is only a landing page (not a full site) and it does NOT rank for anything and it's not being built out further. My question: Would pluralizing our preferred keyword have any effect in the way SEs see the two sub-domains as they're very closely related? hardcandy.sitename.com or hardcandies.sitename.com The new sub-domain would be a fully-functional-SEO-friendly site (well that's the plan anyway). Thanks for all your help.
