Should my commerce store be on a separate domain to my main website
-
Hi, I have a brochure style website mycompanyname.com that gives lots of detail about my company and what services we offer etc. I am soon going to be adding an commerce solution (haven't decided on opencart or paid such as shopify yet).
I was wondering... is the best way to have a shop to have it on a completely separate domain like mycompanynameonlinestore.com or simply add it to a sub folder on my main brochure style website like mycompanyname.com/onlinestore
Many thanks to anyone who takes the time to help me make up my mind!!!

Hi
It will be the same as putting on the main domain. It will get crawled as part of the main site. Blogs tend to site on sub domains, so start with www.blog.xxxx.com or the shop could be www.shop.xxxx.com

Sorry to butt in, what if you put it on a subdomain?

Thanks for this guys. Some great help and points made.

Hi-
I would tend to agree with Bruce that you want to keep it on the same domain, otherwise you are starting from scratch for SEO on the new domain.
Good Luck

Hi Johnas
In our view add it to the main site. If you go for a split solution you dilute all the great work done from both sites. Adding a shopping section to the site will add more traffic to the XXX.com site and therefore will also bring in product specific links and recommendations.
There are some very learned colleagues here on Moz, who will be able to offer more thoughts about your thinking.
As always with SEO, distill the essence of your company and present it in a unique way. Unique in respect of making sure all reading material is written with your own words, with a moderate sprinkling of keywords.
Adding your ecommerce to the site enhances and leads the reader from reader to buyer
Hope that this helps

Does anyone know of a predictive demographics software that helps a website predict its audience based on cookies, or whatever info it has?
Hi guys, I'm looking for a predictive analytics software for better understanding our audience online. Has anyone heard of or used a software that takes the visitors currently coming to your site and uses that data to 'predict' more information about them? Such as age, location, purchasing power, etc? Please let me know if you have!

Subfolder on existing domain or new domain? Which would you choose?
I have been giving it a lot of thought lately. I manage five brand websites for well recognized national brands in the child care vertical. Our websites primarily serve as brochures and lead generators. While we have a blog on each site, I am leaning toward creating content separate from our "brochure style sales copy" that targets each of our individual personas. While it is our primary objective to drive lead volume up, I think people are at various stages in the decision process and even post decision, where we can do a better job nurturing them, engaging them, proving brand worth and all of the psychological reasons people choose and stay with a brand. With that, if it was your call to make, would you create a subfolder for each persona target, i.e. example.com/persona1/target-theme-1, or would you create a brand new experience on a new domain? Essentially, both options will provide interesting content, tips, advice, videos, downloads, etc. But, creating a new domain may help separate people from our sales copy, so they don't feel so pressured. I would build out linking for those who wish to engage at that level, but don't want to treat all visitors the same, like we currently do. I look forward to an interesting conversation about this. Also, if anyone has done this very well in the past or currently, I would love to see some example sites.

Spammy website dominating SERPs! Why!?
Hey guys, I've recently noticed that a series of EMDs have been setup to completely spam an extensive set of keywords - and it seems to be working. All of the URLs are keyword targeted with tons of keyword variations. And they're getting massive ranking preference over a number of more established websites. These are just an example of some of the domains; diykitchens1.co.uk fittedkitchens1.co.uk cheapkitchens1.co.uk kitchenunits1.co.uk And then there's loads of local targeted domains such as; kitchensglasgow1.co.uk kitchensedinburgh1.co.uk Again, all of these are getting high ranking with what seems to be duplicated websites. It's pretty bizarre. Will Google penalise these sites? Surely they will?

Will creating sub folders for foreign versions of the website, remove rank juice from the main site?
Hi, We plan to create sub-folders for our german, spanish and italian language versions. If we do will this pass rank juice to the new sites, but at the same time badly effect our main site, regards link juice/serp? Or is this not such a huge factor in people's experience? Many thanks. James.

E-commerce SEO when products are shared between sites
We have a couple of e-commerce sites that sell the same product. One focuses more on a niche category of the products, while the others contains a wide variety of products. Will we be hit with a penalty from google if the product descriptions are the same? If so, how much of a difference in content does there need to be? There are only so many ways to describe the product and it is usually done in a couple sentences. The rest of the product description contains bullet points of the products and is the same for each product. We are also looking for a SEO company to work with and wondered if there are companies out there that specialize in e-commerce seo that can work with a small ($500 month) budget. I've looked through the recommended companies directory here, but it seems most have minimum retainers around $1000 a month. Also, what should I look for in an SEO company?

Hi guys.. post-penguin my website coming in and out of serps every other day... what reason for that? ie. #11 --> #300+
We had one of the pre-penguin "unnatural links " messages in WMT - then Penguin hit April 24th/25th.. wee then set to work on Link profile... since 19th May we have had numerous search phrases come 'back' into rank pre-penguin for a day ie.. #5 - #10 and then drop the next.. ie 300+ this has been happening across a wide range of key phrases.... in fact it may well be that the key phrases are added to the serps 'briefly' or for a set amount of time... but our ranking checker checks daily so while it appears to be every other day in and out there may be another pattern... but the question is What is Google doing here and Why? any suggestions?

Spam like visits to website
I am having a problem where I'm getting an enormous amount of unique visitors that bounce from a small area in Oregon even though we never market there. It appears to be some type of ping. It messes up our tracking and inflates the bounce rate. Is there a way to block this? I'm OK with any type of block because our reach is statewide in Florida. ANy feedback?

Website coming up in omitted results for search term?
Hi, My website is coming up in omitted results for search term. Now I have heard before if this is the case then its mainly due to a duplicate content penalty. But the content I used is unique and produced by a copywriter so its good. Its a new site and was in the results for about 2 weeks, I changed the non www to www in webmaster tools 1 day ago and now its sitting in omitted results. In webmaster tools I had to add the domain twice one non www and one www. Both accounts I hooked up a sitemap. Is it just because the site is new and its just working out where to rank me? Just so you know the non www was indexed for the 2 weeks changed it in webmaster tools so I wanted the www one indexed and now gone into omitted results. Cheers
