What would cause the wrong category page to come up?

I am trying to figure out why the wrong thing is coming up in the serps. For example, we are trying to rank for used widgets. But when you type in used widgets in google the primary widget page doesn't come up, one of the secondary categories under used widgets comes up. What would cause this? What are things I should check?

Is it possible for you to give a clearer description of the categories? You say they are different products but that one is a second category of the other
Does the page you want to rank show up for any other searches? In your analytics are you getting any traffic from Google to that page?

I did the site search that you suggest- site:www.site.com widgets and it was in the correct order.
When I added the word used to the search it came up in the wrong order. They both have the word used, used the same amount of time. It makes no sense to me.

They actually are two separate types of items so I don't think I can canonical because I still want people to find the other category if that is what they are looking for. The names are so similar it is a problem.
I have an x category, y category, and xy category. Even though the names are the same, they are very different products.

Hi,
The best way I find to see what the search engines thinks is the best page from your site for a term is to do a site search with the term you are checking.
E.g.
site:yousite.com + Term
In your case : yousite.com + used widgets
This shows you the pages in order that Googles ranks them. Also its a good way to identify duplicated title tags.

You could use a canonical tag to tell google which page is the desired page. Unless the other page also had targeted key terms on it. Then I would avoid the canonical tag and try to find a better way to optimize the other page for key terms not so closely related.

It is unfortunate, but they have almost the exact same name. I don't know how to differentiate them.

These titles are so close that google is probably flipping a coin.

For the term "used widget" ,the title for the page I want to rank is "used widget for sale". For the page I do not want it to rank for this term it is "used widget - type for sale".

It It has breadcrumbs and it shows the category in the level up mechanism for the category sort.

Proofread the title tags. Be sure that the one that you want to rank is the best optimized.

it can be that both pages are semantically similar and the robot is not sure which one from both should it rank
You could try to create an internal link in secondary category "url" to the url you want to rank, using the keyword as anchor. It may helps

What are we doing wrong?
So, we run seo tests via moz, gtmetrix and other sites. On many keywords (NSFW) we appear around 3-7 on the first page. Our biggest issue is that we are following all the rules moz etc say and we don't move but, but the teo tops sites fail on almost everything we are told to do..... Why? It confuses us. When serving a 410 for page gone, should I serve an error page?
I'm removing a bunch of old & rubbish pages and was going to serve 410 to tell google they're gone (my understanding is it'll get them out of the index a bit quicker than a 404). I should still serve an error page though, right? Similar to a 404. That doesn't muddy the "gone" message that I'm giving Google? There's no need to 410 and die?

How would you handle these pages? Should they be indexed?
If a site has about 100 pages offering specific discounts for employees at various companies, for example... mysite.com/discounts/target mysite.com/discounts/kohls mysite.com/discounts/jcpenney and all these pages are nearly 100% duplicates, how would you handle them? My recommendation to my client was to use noindex, follow. These pages tend to receive backlinks from the actual companies receiving the discounts, so obviously they are valuable from a linking standpoint. But say the content is nearly identical between each page; should they be indexed? Is there any value for someone at Kohl's, for example, to be able to find this landing page in the search results? What is the benefit of directory pages?
I recently started at a new job running ecommerce websites. We sell yoga equipment and on 2 of our sites we built directory pages for yoga studios to list their calendars and whatnot. They are pretty old and out of date, but my question is, is there any benefit to these types of directories? If they do, we need to look at refreshing them. But if not, then they need to go. Client would like to 301 redirect the homepage to a category page
Hello MOZ Community!!! I would like your expert opinions on a scenario, please! My client is an ecommerce company, and currently has one of its category pages outranking its homepage for a few key phrases. The homepage, however, has a better conversion rate. So, the client is asking that we make the homepage the category URL, so http://www.theirsite.com/blue-clothes. The existing homepage URL - http://www.theirsite.com - would 301 REDIRECT to the category page - which would render the current version of the homepage. Therefore, there would be nothing, ZERO content, on the MAIN URL: http://www.theirsite.com Has anyone ever done this before? What are the pros and the cons of this practice? Is it best to condense 2 similar category pages?
After reading Rand's great article about building Seo focused pages to serve topics, not keywords (http://moz.com/blog/topics-people-over-keywords-rankings-whiteboard-friday ) I started looking at my site. Question: I have 2 very similar category pages, orginally built to go after similar but different keyword terms. For example, one is: domain.com/blue-rings.html and the other is domain.com/blue-bands.com. (bridal jewelry) "Blue" is just a hypothetical type. At one time I could rank for "blue-rings" and "blue-bands". But with google changes, I think it's better to focus on a general term, right? Not set up similar pages, with same product, for very similar keywords. I'm thinking that having these 2 pages could be actually hurting, as they are competing with each other. Any recommendations? Google Is Indexing The Wrong Page For My Keyword
For a long time (almost 3 mounth) google indexing the wrong page for my main keyword.

The problem is that each time google indexed another page each time for a period of 4-7 days, Sometimes i see the home page, sometimes a category page and sometimes a product page.
It seems though Google has not yet decided what his favorite / better page for this keyword. In addition I have many links I get from bloggers that asked to do a review on one of my products, I'm very careful about that and so I'm always checking the blogger and their website only if it is something good, I allowed it. also i never ask for a link back (must of the time i receive without asking), and as I said, most of their links are anchor with my website name.
