Subdomains or separate domains for dealers?

We are setting up websites for our dealers. We are considering whether it is better to set them up as independent domains (i.e. www.dealer-state-brand.com) or as subdomains (dealer-state.brand.com)
Any thoughts?

Well, BCMull didn't mention subfolders in the question, so I am unclear as to whether that is because they decided against that for some reason, or if they did not consider subfolders as an option to begin with. Based on the question only, I would vote for subdomains over independent domains.
IMO, whether or not to use subfolders versus subdomains is a business and organizational decision, as well as an information architecture, design, and SEO decision. IOW, I see SEO as part of the larger tradeoffs made in any project. From a purely SEO perspective in terms of link equity, I agree that folders are the way to go and the link equity will bring up the entire brand and site for all dealers.
But would folders make sense within the larger picture and their overall business and project goals? I don't know, as I don't know Bcmull's project details and requirements. Link equity is one consideration, but not the only one.

I would just follow and say that using Google or any other company that large is not the best example for most businesses.
Google does not need to worry about SEO. It has one of the most authoritative websites on the internet. They have baked in traffic due to android, chrome and map users. Yes the sub domain works for them from a product and technical standpoint. They have different groups using different technologies different servers/resources so they need the subdomains to make that all work.
As I read the question, this person is not in that situation. This brand needs link equity to be shared. Links are still super important, I don't see why they would want to dilute that by using sub domains. Everything they want to accomplish can be done w a sub folder.

Subdomains are most beneficial for brands looking to organize specific content that many speak to different audiences, for example by region or product.
In addition, brands use subdomains as a way to separate different product lines, divisions, events, or digital publications. Unlike a subfolder, which is often hosted on the main domain’s site navigation or footer, subdomains are a little more independent."
For your particular business need, the author makes a compelling point that translates into you going with dealer-state.brand.com over www.dealer-state-brand.com, the benefits of which override the link equity you would receive from subfolders.
Notice when you think this through, that Google uses subdomains for the products, too. maps.google.com, news.google.com, etc.

Subfolders will allow you to have one site for which you do the SEO, and Clever is correct that the link equity is shared.
Domains and subdomains allow more independent control of each site's SEO.
If the pages off of the subfolders are SEO'd well, then you can rank those pages to that local market.

The same can be said for the subdomains, that you can rank them locally, but Google will consider them separate sites, and link equity will not be shared.
I'm not sure why you wanted to do domains or subdomains, and not folders. I.e., what your overall business goals are for doing so, unless it is to brand each dealer as an independent dealer in their local market.

Nah - I say subdirectory
You get all the control, plus all the link equity is shared across all site. Rising tides raises all ships. I have done this with independent separate brands under a single brand even. It works.
Yes you can rank for subdomains. But the link equity is not shared. Unless you want all that extra work.

I agree with Julie. In this case, the subdomain would give you a cleaner, more authoritative brand identity for both the overall company, and the individual dealers.

I have had no problem with subdomains and SEO. I have ranked several somewhat difficult keywords and believe that it was easier using the subdomain. I didn't A/B test, so I have no proof, but I am pleased with the result.
For user experience, I think a subdomain is significantly better. The product-geography.com domain looks very spammy to me and doesn't carry the brand's credibility. With the subdomain, I'm certain it's the official site.

If you give him independent site then I don't think you will have any control on each site. So better to give subdirectory for SEO.

Google My Business has confirmed that enabling a G+ business page will no longer be available. Users will need to now create a G+ Brand page for their business on G+. My question is: If we create a separate G+ Brand page, are we still able to tie it up with GMB or are they going to be completely different platforms? What are the repercussions of switching a domain?
We have recently switched the calgaryhomepros.com domain, which used to be a point2 site, to our current site, which is hosted by a Real Estate webpage hosting company called Redman. When we replaced the domain for the Redman site, the old point2 site stopped existing, and because the link structure didn’t line up perfectly to the new host, there were a bunch of 404 error pages which rank high-ish in the SERP. My question is, outside of manually redirecting the high ranking 404 pages to our current site, what can I do to improve my SEO in this situation? Is there anything else I should be doing, and is this hurting my SEO drastically?

2 Domains
Hi, one of my clients owns a dental practice. The business is split into 2 parts. One is general dentistry and the other in cosmetic dentistry. They are both aimed at different markets. The question is, should we have 1 website with all the details for the business under, or could we have two domains and promote both sites differently. Local domains vs. subfolders?
I am in the process of rebranding a B2B website for a UK company that has been established on a .net address for ten years. The CMS is Wordpress. The company has previously had localised content on .net/de, .net/au extensions for various regions where they have offices (US, Oz, various Europe.) I am getting varied and at times conflicting feedback from the creative agency, inhouse digital staff, and IT about the best way to proceed with the new website and in particular its future local language versions. Question 1: If we change the .net website to a .com address, will 301 redirects safeguard our SEO real estate? Question 2: we own the .com extension and have been using it for some back office stuff. It was purchased because it was advised that the .net did not carry much credibility in the US, is this correct? Question 3: If we change the .net to the .com which is hosted in the US, will we wipe our search rankings on Google for the UK and non-US locations? I saw this post and wondered:

A friend has a question about buying and using a domain
My friend is starting a yoga site and needed advice about how to use the domains. BikramYogaSantaClarita.com and BikramSCV.com are the 2 domains. The DBA is Bikram Yoga Santa Clarita. This was her message to me: The person I spoke with at GoDaddy suggested using the DBA name as the website and on advertising and the shorter one for email addresses, as it’s easier to say and write down, and also have the shorter one point to the longer DBA one. What do you think? What are your thoughts?

Subdomain VS Subdirectory
Hi guys i need help i cant decide which path should i take but 1st let me start by discussing about my goal and the company background. The website is a listing more like a classified ads that manually verify each listings before we approve and we only allow listing of condominiums nothing else. We cover 10 countries. Our current website structure is like this http://website.com/singapore http://website.com/thailand http://website.com/malaysia and so on our goal is to dominate each local search queries, like lets say we like to rank our domain http://website.com/singapore where people from singapore who uses local search engine could find condo's in singapore is local search engine like http://google.com.sg whats the best way to do it? should i leave the structure of our site that way or through subdomain? http://singapore.website.com as what i have researched its more beneficial if we use subdomain but most articles are old im not sure if this can still be achieve today. Question about domains with 2 or 3 hyphens
I have a client who has 3 domains in the following format: keywordkeywordkeywordkeyword.co.uk keyword-keyword-keyword.co.uk keyword-keyword-keyword-london.co.uk And needs advice on the best one to use. The client is leaning towards the one with 3 hyphens because it has more keywords but I am a bit worried about using it at the risk of it looking too spammy because of the hyphens. So my question is will 3 hyphens as in the above example cause anything negative in terms of SEO? We will not be doing any black-hat seo tactics but even so will 3 hyphens cause any problems or is it safer to go with just two hyphens? And secondly the client asked if Google can understand different words or is it better to have hyphens so Google can understand that there are different words?
