Job Title: President
Company: Get on the Map
I worked for the original search engine, the YELLOW PAGES, in Sacramento for AT&T, SBC and before that PacBell. We didn't know it, but we were optimizing and doing key word research before it was a thing. 916-265-2521. Now I use that knowledge to help my clients grow their business with SEO and social media. Over 20 years, I worked with several thousand local, small businesses about their marketing goals and I understand the challenges a biz owner faces. I specialize in businesses that back in the day would have generated a significant number of leads from the yellow pages: attorneys, plumbers, dentists, roofers, restaurants, salons, etc. My turf is Sacramento, Folsom, Roseville, Elk Grove and the Greater Sacramento area. I'm a jazz singer, San Francisco Giants fan (from before they started winning) and I love red wine.

RE: Partner outranking main site in local
They're positive for both. I don't think he's well known.
There may be a few more searches for the partner's name because there are other attorneys, in other states, with the same name but according to ahrefs it's not a huge number.
If a person searched for the partner, it would be nice if they saw his one box, but our main goal is to get the firm on the map.

Partner outranking main site in local
I've been working on local for a client, and it looks like the partner's name and one review is outranking the firm name and it's 20 reviews. The firm's GMB profile is better, but they're still buried.
Any advice?

What do you think of these profile links for SEO?
In my Google Search Console today, I saw a link from Creative Market. In Moz last week I saw a link from Instructables. In Moz, they have high numbers. DO you think these type of profiles have a big impact?

RE: Are These Links Junk?
They don't look junkie to me. On Ahrefs, Inman has a UR 80, DR 82.

RE: Jump links?
Thank you so much! I suspected this, but wanted to make sure by asking the Big Brains at Moz. You always come thru!

Jump links?
I am using a directory plug-in that doesn't have separate urls for each profile. Is there any way to set up a link to go directly to a particular business?

Html extensions
I have remodeled an old html site using wordpress.
I see some instructions in wordpress that says I can add an .html extension to some of the pages, but it looks pretty complicated. Is there any benefit in going through that hassle? or should I just ask my web guy to rewrite via htaccess

RE: Does this link building actually work?
Wouldn't you hate to be the SEO consultant who had all his clients penalized at the same time? Sheesh!

RE: Panda, rankings and other non-sense issues
I think it's like the Highway Patrol.
Everyone speeds, but everyone doesn't get caught. You point to a similar web page that hasn't been penalized, but there are many who have.

RE: Reviews - Google & Third Party
I use an app created by some of the super smart local SEO guys, called Get Five Stars. It lets you direct your client to whatever review sites are the most beneficial for you.

RE: Beware of Fishy 4-Star Reviews
Thanks Miriam,
I got one of these recently, but I think a 4.8 looks more realistic than a 5.0 so I don't mind. Do you think they're doing it just to get Google points? The person who wrote mine is clearly not a client or prospect. She wrote a review about Starbucks being too expensive, so she certainly isn't going to be hiring a marketing consultant.

RE: Panda, rankings and other non-sense issues
I feel bad for you. I don't have any answers, but I'm a singer, and your website is excellent. This is not an example of Google rewards quality.

RE: Can Google+ help you to rank?
I have seen zero results from Google+ - I don't even see people's own Google+ profiles ranking (when Twitter, LinkedIn, etc. easily rank).

RE: Client Wants To Use A .io Domain Name - How Bad For Organic?
How much does he plan to spend on marketing to reinforce his brand? I believe .io will rank on Google just as easily as .net .info .us etc. but how much will it take to rank in their customer's brain? I have a .us and 7.5 years later I still have to reinforce the domain when I am talking to a client. It's like trying to get a client to say chartreuse instead of lime green.

RE: The best link building tactics for small business' which don't include asking for links or guest blogging?
What is the reason they want to avoid those techniques? It would make it easier to suggest something that fits in with their strengths.

RE: Alt Tags
Are the products on those pages important to you? Do you have another method of getting those products sold if you don't add the alt tags? Are you getting as much out of those pages now as you need to?
There's a million things you can do with SEO, but adding alt tags is one of the easiest ways to improve a page's performance.
Only you know if that page matters.

RE: How do you do Local SEO in a small town?
I love doing charity & event sponsorships. Often I can get a link for a client in exchange for helping promote their event. Match the events up with the client's actual interest and they get good publicity, referrals and personal satisfaction in addition to an SEO benefit.

Looks like your connection to Moz was lost, please wait while we try to reconnect.
