Years? I saw 3 competitor companies boosting (alle-noten.de, notenbuch.de, stretta-music.com) their DA from 30 to 50 within a couple of weeks.
Obviously concentratation on what the customers wants gets more and more irrelevant. Instead the massive purchse of links is key. -

You've left off a very important fact.
Are you trying to go from 0 to 20 or from 20 to 40. The time required is completely different.

Years. Domain authority uses a logarithmic scale like the Richter scale used to measure earthquakes. Every notch you move up the rung takes exponentially more time, discipline, creativity, outreach, and energy.
If you're asking the question b/c you have to set expectations with someone, I'm with Gaston and would suggest you set business goals and a realistic timeline to reach them versus relying on a metric that correlates with high rankings. Think leads and downloads. If it's an e-commerce site, think sales. Things that are easier to measure and explain to the business.
What are the most important factors to increase a website's domain authority?
Someone from Moz would have to answer that. Here is the page on their site that best explains it. My understanding is the domain authority metric tries to mirror Google's interpretation of a website's importance and would expect incoming links and their sources to be given considerable weight in the calculation.

This brings a bigger question: Why do you need a 20 point increase ?
You MUST know that having higher metrics will not make you rank higher. It will increase the chances of ranking higher and impress your clients/supervisors.
In my opinion, you should not focus in metrics, such as PA or DA. Focus in doing what google wants.To answer your questions, just get (somehow) links with higher PA/DA than your page and make your link profile to have more and more of those links. Timeline? a few per week for the entire life.
Remember, moz's metrics look at the most, the backlinks pointing to your page and the links in the pages related to the backlink and you website... So the key in Moz' s metrics: BACKLINKS!Hope I've helped.

When creating a sub-domain, does that sub-domain automatically start with the DA of the main domain?
We have a website with a high DA and we are considering sub-folder or sub-domain. One of the great benefits of a sub-folder is that we know we get to keep the high DA, is this also the case for sub-domains? Why is my domain authority still 1?
I changed the domain of my website from www.vanillacrush.co.uk to www.carissamay.co.uk at the end of December and yet my DA for carissamay is still 1. As advised, I set up a 301 redirect from VC to CM which seems to be working fine. However when I check on redirect detective it tells me I also have a 302 set up. Could this be confusing things? http://www.vanillacrush.co.uk

Consolidating Multiple Domains into A Single Domain
I have a client who's website is an amalgamation of multiple domains. jacksonhole.net is the main domain but the site passes traffic back and forth from the following domains/sites. My questions is, would it it be better for SEO to consolidate all of these domains under the single high authority domain and 301 redirect the rest or is that a really bad idea? Redirect ruined domain to new domain without passing link juice
A new client has a domain which has been hammered by bad links, updates etc and it's basically on its arse because of previous SEO guys. They have various domains for their business (brand.com, brand.co.uk) and want to use a fresh domain and take it from there. Their current domain is brand.com (the ruined one). They're not bothered about the rankings for brand.com but they want to redirect brand.com to brand.co.uk so that previous clients can find them easily. Would a 302 redirect work for this? I don't want to set up a 301 redirect as I don't want any of the crappy links pointing across. Thanks!

Keep multiple domains or combine them?
I need some help figuring out if I should combine multiple domains or if I should let them be separate? I have domain1.com, domain2.com, and domain3.com. Well, domain1.com owns domain2.com and domain3.com. And currently domain1.com points to domain2.com and domain3.com from the homepage. They are going through some changes at their business, and now the option is on the table to combine the domains or still let them be separate as long as they link to each other. What is the best way to handle this and are there more things I should go through before making a decision? None of them have a ton of links to them, and they aren't super robust, but would just to have some advice. Thanks a lot

Multiple IPs (load balancing) for same domain
Hello, I'm considering moving our main website to a multiple servers, perhaps in multiple different datacenters and use a DNS round robin load balancing by assigning it 4 different IP addresses (probably from 4 different C classes). example:

ourdomain.com A 4.4.4.4 Every time you ping the domain you will get a response from another IP of the group. Therefore search engines will see a different IP each time they scan the site. We have used the main IP for our website for past 6 years without changing it. We have a quite good SEO in our niche which I don't want to loose of course. My question is, will adding more IPs to the domain affect any how on the ranking ? What is the suggested way to do it anyway? What is recommended to do before and after? Recovery during domain migration
On average, how long does it takes to recover 80% of the rankings if two high authority domains are combined without chaging any content? I totally understand that each domain is different and search engines can treat them differently but if all the steps are followed to the T what are the chances?
