Duplicate Content Issues with Pagination
-
Hi Moz Community,
We're an eCommerce site so we have a lot of pagination issues but we were able to fix them using the rel=next and rel=prev tags. However, our pages have an option to view 60 items or 180 items at a time. This is now causing duplicate content problems when for example page 2 of the 180 item view is the same as page 4 of the 60 item view. (URL examples below) Wondering if we should just add a canonical tag going to the the main view all page to every page in the paginated series to get ride of this issue.
https://www.example.com/gifts/for-the-couple?view=all&n=180&p=2
https://www.example.com/gifts/for-the-couple?view=all&n=60&p=4
Thoughts, ideas or suggestions are welcome. Thanks

Thanks for your help on this Nigel

Hi Zack
If you have specified No URLs in search console or set to crawl only say, one, it's just a matter of time before they are dropped from the index. Just be patient and it should resolve itself.
There are ways to block them completely using robots.txt or a rewrite in htaccess but I haven't used them - maybe someone else can advise:

Hey Nigel,
These parameters are already in my search console but Moz is still picking them up as duplicates.
-
Hi Zack - That's where parameters come in to play - if you look further down you can specify which one if any to allow to be crawled.
Choose the parameter from the list then choose whether they narrow, sort etc and pick 'narrow' then choose what Google does. You can exclude all sorted pages this way.

Hi Nigel,
Thanks for the response and the post, I've actually read the article before and used the rel=next and rel=prev to fix some duplicate content issues because of pagination in the past.
Right now, the rel=next and rel=prev is not solving my duplication problems because pagination isn't the issue so the speak. The duplication is occurring because i have two page types (one at view 60 items and one at view 180 items - kind of like a filter) Each view (60 & 180) has their own set of pagination rules but it looks like page 4 of the 60 view is a duplicate of page 2 of the 180 view if that makes sense.
It becomes really tricky here to try and find a solution.

Hi Zack
There area number of ways of dealing with this problem all of which are covered here: https://moz.com/blog/seo-guide-to-google-webmaster-recommendations-for-pagination
For me when I have sort problems I go to parameters and specify exactly what Google should do with the result. It's reasonably simply to use parameters in search console and specify NO URLs for the parameter ?view
However, a word of warning - you have to be really careful doing this as you could end up blocking the whole site with the slightest slip. Like canonicals, no indexing and robots.txt - get a good SEO just to take a look.
Best Regards

Duplicate Content from Wordpress Template
Hi Wondering if anyone can help, my site has flagged up with duplicate content on almost every page, i think this is because the person who set up the site created a lot of template pages which are using the same code but have slightly different features on. How would I go about resolving this? Would I need to recode every template page they have created?

Duplicate content for vehicle inventory.
Hey all, In the automotive industry... When uploading vehicle inventory to a website I'm concerned with duplicate content issues. For example, 1 vehicle is uploaded to the main manufacturers website, then again to the actual dealerships website & then again to Craigslist & even sometimes to a group site. The information is all the same, description, notes, car details & images. What would you all recommend for alleviating duplicate content issues? Should I be using the rel canonical back to the manufacturers website? Once the vehicle is sold all pages disappear. Thanks so much for any advice.

Duplicate content in product listing
We have "duplicate content" warning in our moz report which mostly revolve around our product listing (eCommerce site) where various filters return 0 results (and hence show the same content on the page). Do you think those need to be addressed, and if so how would you prevent product listing filters that appearing as duplicate content pages? should we use rel=canonical or actually change the content on the page?

We have e-commerce site selling books. Besides basic information on books, we have content for “About the book” , “Editorial Reviews”, “About the author” etc. But the content in all these section are duplicate and are available on all sites selling similar books. Our question is: 1.Should we worry about the content being duplicate?2.If yes, then will it by a good idea to hide this duplicate content using javascript or iframe?

How damaging is duplicate content in a forum?
Hey all; I hunted around for this in previous questions in the Q&A and didn't see anything. I'm just coming back to SEO after a few years out of the field and am preparing recommendations for our web dev team. We use a custom-coded software for our forums, and it creates a giant swathe of duplicate content, as each post has its own link. For example: domain.com/forum/post_topic domain.com/forum/post_topic/post1 domain.com/forum/post_topic/post2 ...and so on. However, since every page of the forum defaults to showing 20 posts, that means that every single forum thread that's 20 posts long has 21 different pages with identical content. Now, our forum is all user-generated content and is not generally a source of much inbound traffic--with occasional exceptions--but I was curious if having a mess of duplicate content in our forums could damage our ability to rate well in a different directory of the site. I've heard that Panda is really cracking down on duplicate content, and last time I was current on SEO trends, rel="canonical" was the hot new thing that everyone was talking about, so I've got a lot of catching up to do. Any guidance from the community would be much appreciated.

How to resolve duplicate content and title errors?
Hello, I'm new to this resource and SEO. I have taken the time to read other posts but am not entirely sure about the best way to resolve the issues I am experiencing and so am hoping for a helpful hand. My site diagnostics advise me that most of my errors relate to duplicate content and duplicate page titles. Most of these errors seem to relate to our ecommerce product pages. A little about us first, we manufacture and retail over the internet our own line of unique products which can only be purchased through our website. So it’s not so important to make our product pages stand out from competitors. An example of one of our product pages can be found here: http://www.nabru.co.uk/product/Sui+2X2+Corner+Sofa In terms of SEO we are focusing on improving the rankings of our category pages which compete much more with our competitors, but would also like our product pages to be found via a google search for those potential customers that are at the late stage of a buying cycle. So my question: Whilst it would be good to add more content to the product pages, user reviews, individual product descriptions etc (and have good intentions to do this over time, which unfortunately is limited) is there an easy way to fix the duplicate content issues, ensure our products can be found and ensure that the main focus is on our category pages? Many thanks.
