What is your Biggest SEO selling point to prospective clients?

Typically, our SEO questions are around "how to's" and etc. So, to change it up I will ask a business question: What is your biggest selling point when presenting your SEO services to a new client?
In a spirit of transparency, I will tell you mine ahead of time. With PPC, TV, Radio, and Print at some point in time that ad comes to an end. When it ends, that is it. There is no residual from that advertisement - or very minimal at best. With SEO, once you are ranked well and well optimized you continue to get clients for a much longer period of time.
With clients who TV and print, this rings especially true and is easily provable. I can't wait to hear yours.

I am also of the opinion that Link Building is the main argument in favor of my client. Currently my attention is focused on the development of the mcpecube project. I also agree that Links embedded in content relevant to the topic of the linked page are more valuable.

Good answer Dan, thanks. I have used the screenshot of where their business ranks on that name as well and it is good. One thing I avoid is ever using their computer to show them rankings for anything so as to not pull rankings influenced by their searches.

Hey, thought I'd chime in! Those are all great ways of selling SEO.
I try to show the prospect a real pain point in their specific situation.
For example, for one local business I actually took a screenshot of a search for their brand, where they were not even showing up, and printed it and brought it to them. When they saw a search for their own business didn't even bring a result, that was motivating!
Or I'll do a really quick competitive analysis (nothing very scientific, just a real good guess at a desired keyword) and find where they don't rank well but a competitor does, and show them that.
Or, if a slightly more tech savvy prospect, I'll find a few things really wrong with the website, some 404s or crawlability issues.
If you can present these things in a way where you don't alarm people too much but generate that reaction of "wow, we need to do something about this". Present them in a way where you're also helping, educating and can provide a solution.
So my angle sometimes isn't "here's why SEO is important" it's "here's why YOU need SEO".

Thanks James, all three are good points.
In sales training, we called the first one the moment of need. When a person sees your business at the moment that is an issue, they are likely to explore and buy from you. So sales people should be forever knocking as that need is not static.
The second one is great as well, especially for those who don't like to think of "Selling" their services. Based on research, more people by far and those with higher education by far choose organic placements versus paid search. (last I saw was 7.5 to 1 better CTR). -
Hi Robert, that is a really interesting selling point for SEO as a practice. I think it is quite surprising the number of individuals who won't sell SEO services because it feels cheap. My feeling is that this is a business like any other and provided we are offering a high-quality service, educating clients and managing their expectations SEO should be sold.
Here are some of the major selling points that we use when pitching to clients...
- Getting your products and services in front of prospective customers at the moment they are actively looking for (or at least thinking about looking for) whatever it is you offer
- SEO is subtle and doesn't interrupt - you're not stopping them from doing something like a TV, radio or print ad does, you are assisting them in their problem solving quest. (related to the first point but this one is a clear comparison of SEO vs other marketing methods).
- Build trust and credibility in your industry - this point can certainly be debated but we remind clients that with other forms of marketing you are simply buying attention whereas with SEO (and the peripheral activities) you are earning and building trust. Ranking #1 organically for an important term can be beneficial to your business beyond the traffic it provides.

Do you think that i should enable the nofollow so as not to get penalized by Google. We tend to use the same cross network linking scheme (in the header) for all branded sites. SEO For Local Searches
I run a driving school of over 100 instructors in the UK. We cover around 60 different areas. My homepage www.driveJohnsons.co.uk is optimised for 'driving lessons' and 'driving school' search terms mainly. My area pages are optimised for the same but with the area included ie: Driving Lessons Birmingham or Driving Lessons Leeds I've taken a drop in many areas... I've cleaned up my incoming links using the disavow too and upped more relevant links associated with the same industry as myself. The question i have is should i change my URL's for my area pages from www.driveJohnsons.co.uk/driving-lessons-leeds to: www.driveJohnsons.co.uk/leeds I've been told stuffing the URL with keywords for an area actually dilutes the strength of my homepage and all the other areas. At the moment i have 60 area pages with: www.drivejohnsons.co.uk/driving-lessons-area It use to work a treat, but i've started seeing some companies change their URLs to: /area and excluding the driving-lessons If i make this change then i'm either going to have to bit the bullet on build up links for those areas again or do a redirect for each area. I've added most areas to google places and i've added google map to many of area pages too. If anyone knows a bit more, please let me know...

Redirecting International ccTLD affect SEO?
I've watched Rand's Whiteboard Friday video on How to Host and Where to Host for International Websites and read Gianluca's article on International SEO; however, I am still unable to find an answer or solution to this. ABC Company is a US based company with the website www.abcexample.com and plans to target people in Hong Kong. Therefore, they purchase .hk ccTLD. However, with the time restraint and budget limit, ABC Company is unable to create a completely new website under .hk ccTLD. Scenario 1: ABC Company plans to create different pages for each service offered in HK and 302 redirect .hk ccTLD blank service page to www.abcexample.com's same service page. Quesiton 1: Will this have the same benefit of creating a .hk website? Although ABC Company is redirecting, does the .hk ccTLD still tell Serach Engines that we are targeting people in Hong Kong? Will this solution harm or help with SEO with other search engines in Hong Kong? Scenario 2: ABC creates a /hk subdirectory under www.abcexample.com and have exactly same content in the same language as www.abcexample.com but use rel="alternate" hreflang="x" and use Webmaster to Geotarget Hong Kong. Question 2: By using rel="alternate" hreflang="x" and geotarget, will this avoid duplicate content if ABC Company has exact content in the /hk folder? Please let me know if my questions and scenarios are unclear. I understand that these are not best practices. Please advise the best way to work around this. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Questions to help get to know a potential client and see what the possibilities are for there campaign?
OK so I am putting together a list of questions to refer potential clients to. The purpose of these questions is to: 1, Help them understand the difference between "just give us your keywords and we will make you rank" seo and the full range of options that are advocated here on seo moz. .... 2, Get them to see that there are different levels of involvement that are available for different aspects of a campaign and give them ideas and options on how much input they want to have as well as make them see that we can help them with even the stuff they are gonna do themselves or do it for them with there input and permission. Thats where things get a bit confusing I was thinking of having a list of fifty linkbuilding/linkbaiting techniques and check box options beside each one so that they can read a little bit about the particular technique ie forum participation for example and then see how they felt like that related to there industry , wether they would want there staff to do it with some training from us wther they would want us to help them find the right forums and show them how to link back and to which page, or wether they would just want us to handle everything or simply not feel that that was right for there business .. then they would move on to the next thing ie video creation or user generated content and in the end we would have a big list of things to discuss with them and they would have a better understandiing of how much there is to good seo and what might work for them and also how we could help them and how a relationship/ partnership might look I would love some feed back on this is it possible will it help us to build trust with potential clients (which is diffucult for a new biz in this industry) how would you lay it out would it be a usefull resource for other seo companies etc thanks so much seo mozzers this forum is awsome and i know you will steer me in the right direction oh ps this would be something we would keep on our site
