How long does a new domain need to get a specific level of trust?
-
We are a small start-up in germany in the Sports and health sector. We currently are building a network of people in that sector and give each person a seperate wordpress blog. The idea is to create a big network of experts.
My question is: How long is the period for google to trust a completely new URL?
We set up each project and create content on the page. Each week the owner of the site puts up an expert article that contain keywords. And we set certain links from other blogs, etc.
Also, do you think it is more important for a site to get say, 20 backlinks from anywhere. Or 5 backlinks from very trusted blogs, etc.?

I would not give the experts a blog on the wordpress sub domain be sure that when they blog it is on a sub folder for your website so when links are built they benefit your site directly and not wordpress.

I would suggest you take a look at this page on MozTrust. As the name indicates, MozTrust is an tool which measures trust factors for a website.
MozTrust and PR are similar metrics. They are both attempts to determine a site's importance and credibility. The largest factor is your site's ability to earn credible external links from other credible sites.
Example 1- you create a natural viagra-like sex supplement using common ingredients from other similar pills. You set up an e-commerce site and sell your product. It will likely take you a long time (i.e. years) to build up trust unless you pour an enormous amount of resources (i.e. money) into the site.
Example 2 - you create a natural viagra-like sex supplement based on credible research from UC Berkeley or another credible institution. You perform authentic studies by doctors and the results are published in the New England Journal of Medicine and other credible medical journals. The doctors and researchers involved in the study all post numerous articles on your site, and respond to questions.
As a result of the above activities, the New York Times, CNN and other credible news sources cover the story and link to your site. Additionally the doctors involved with the study are asked to be interviewed on Oprah and other television shows. All the media hype turns into hundreds of links from highly credibly sites and a lot of social media buzz.
The second example can help a brand new site very quickly earn a lot of trust. Then the product begins selling, authentic testimonials are received, further research is performed, more doctors and patients begin working with the product, leading to even more credibility and trust.

Thanks for you quick answer Ryan,
what I mean with trust is that at a certain point google starts to trust a website based on the content it has. Google pays more attention to that website and links count more from it. It gets a kind of jump in importance.
At least, that is what I have noticed. Do you know if there are key factors that trigger this or if there is a certain time period which google needs?

How long is the period for google to trust a completely new URL?
Trust is earned over time with links. Some sites will gain it very quickly, while others will never achieve high levels of trust.
The first question is, how exactly do you define "trust"? You could use PR to measure trust, but everything is relative. If you only consider a PR 10 site as trustworthy, it is 99.99% likely that your site will never be trustworthy. As of Aug 4th, 2011 there are only 14 PR 10 websites (pages) worldwide, yet there are tens of millions of websites.
Even if you establish a certain level as trustworthy, such as PR 7, the next issue is measuring PR. Google only releases PR toolbar updates 3-4 times each year, but the figures are updated daily internally.
If you decided PR 7 was your goal (as an example) then it is possible to achieve a PR 7 site quickly if you could pump enough resources (i.e. money) into the site. If you created a well-designed, quality site which offered a product, service or information that was credible enough to cause enough interest, then it can certainly be done.
do you think it is more important for a site to get say, 20 backlinks from anywhere. Or 5 backlinks from very trusted blogs, etc.?
I would prefer 1 quality link in content from a trusted blog or other quality source then 100 "backlinks from anywhere".

How long will old pages stay in Google's cache index. We have a new site that is two months old but we are seeing old pages even though we used 301 redirects.
Two months ago we launched a new website (same domain) and implemented 301 re-directs for all of the pages. Two months later we are still seeing old pages in Google's cache index. So how long should I tell the client this should take for them all to be removed in search?

Domain Level Redirects - HTTP and HTTPS
About 2 years ago (well before I started with the company), we did an http=>https migration. It was not done correctly. The http=>https redirect was never inserted into the .htaccess file. In essence, we have 2 websites. According to Google search console, we have 19,000 HTTP URLs indexed and 9,500 HTTPS URLs indexed. I've done a larger scale http=>https migration (60,000 SKUs), and our rankings dropped significantly for 6-8 weeks. We did this the right way, using sitemaps, and http and https GSC properties. Google came out recently and said that this type of rankings drop is normal for large sites. I need to set the appropriate expectations for management. Questions: How badly is the domain split affecting our rankings, if at all? Our rankings aren't bad, but I believe we are underperforming our backlink profile. Can we expect a net rankings gain when the smoke clears? There are a number of other technical SEO issues going on as well. How badly will our rankings drop (temporarily) and for how long when we add the redirect to the .htaccess file? Is there a way to mitigate the rankings impact? For example, only submitting partial sitemaps to our GSC http property? Has anyone gone through this before?

How to handle the 301 of a complete domain on URL level
We will be shutting down an old website with many (good) links, since the site has no strategic relevance anymore. We do have many other sites, but none of them has exactly the same content/topic. Nonetheless, I would like to keep the juice and redirect the site to another newer project. However, I want to redirect certain URLs of the old site to probably even different domains, depending on which content matches best with the alternative newer site. Does this make sense? Or would youjust redirect the whole domain to one other domain although they don't really have the same topic And how would you handle the URL redirects if the old site has more than 50k URLs? Because that is the case. Thanks for any advice

7 years old domain sandboxed for 8 months, wait or make a domain change?
Hello folks The questions is, if a domain, 7 years old being sandboxed due to "notice of unnatural links to website" does it make sense to make a domain change (301 permanent redirect and make a "domain change" under google webmaster tools) to another, aged(!) domain name?

Website being sandboxed for over 8 months already and there is no chance to do anything with those "unnatural" links to website... Any suggestions?0 -
Is this Domain Change Worthwhile?
Hi- I have a client who has setup a new criminal law firm in the last few months. The URL is like: www.somenamelawyers.com ['somename' is the same # characters as their company name] I have run a successful AdWords a/c for them and many of the big traffic and conversion keywords include 'criminal lawyers'. From a SEO perspective, the long goal is to get traffic for 'criminal lawyers' and keywords that phrase match that. So I am considering migrating them to www.somenamecriminallawyers.com. I have researched this issue and understand the technicalities involved in moving. My question here is 'is this change worthwhile'. I think it is worthwhile because it really is in a sense rebranding them to be more clearly in a specific business domain, ie. criminal law. Also, they are a new outfit so they don't have a lot of backlinks yet. And mainly, they will get a SEO boost to their core keywords 'criminal lawyers'. Thanks in advance for your thoughts- Jules

New domain name for existing site
Hi all, Our business has aquired a new domain name because there are several organisations closely related to ours that use similar domain names to target a niche group of users. We would like to use this new domain name to link to an existing website with content targeted at this user group as we feel that they will be more comfortable getting to the content via this new URL. After a useful search in these forums the majority of SEOMOZ gurus suggest that the new URL should be redirected to our current site using a 301 and we are happy to do this. However do we have to link the URL to our homepage or is it acceptable to link to a subfolder within the domain and then targeting content on this page to the user niche? Thanks for any input. Kind regards. Edit 11:38 The old url is oldcommunity.charity.com (we know having a subdomain is bad) this is where we manage all community engagement. The new url is www.newparticularcommunity.com and we would redirect this to oldcommunity.charity.com. The reason we have bought www.oldparticularcommunity.com is because the url is used by other charities for community engagement and is recognised by the community we are targeting. We are redirecting to our old site because we do not want to engage with them on this new url as our old site oldcommunity.charity.com already does this and can cater for the new community and perhaps they haven't realised that we can.
