RE: What vanity Url should I use for Google+ business page?
Hi Ceclilia.
What did you go for? We just got our Vanity URL invite and I have accepted what Google was offering. It is a bit frustrating that we did not have the option to alter the vanity URL to simply Binarydrive, without the CoUK at the end (especially as we do own the .com) ... either way, it is far more attractive, and memorable, than the old numeric string.
Regardng your question, I agree with Kane, go for BRAND over keywords / location etc. I think over the next 12 months we will see even more penalties for location / keyword spammed URL's .... it really frustrates me to see poorly consrtucted websites ranking at the top when you search for "engine tuners in Norfolk" and get a top listing of "enginetunersinnorfolk.co.uk" or SIMILAR !! Build your brand.. think big.. one day you might want to be National or even Global

The effect of having CR LF HT commands in a <title>tag</title>
Hello.
I am looking at a customer site with a CMS system that is controlling the population of the meta TITLE
Currently it has the TITLE set as this
<title>(CR)(LF)<br />(HT)Site Details REMOVED - Customer name REMOVED(CR)(LF)<br /></title>
Naturally, we would prefer it to be
<title>Site Details REMOVED - Customer name REMOVED</title>
What affect would these commands have in the title! Google shows their title when you Google the company website... so I guess it can see it .... but GA "Top Site Content" widget shows it as blank ?
Any ideas?
Cheers

RE: Backlink question
Many thanks Lynn, that all makes sense to me. We will suggest moving forward with NEW logo's set as BRAND and no-follow only. We will leave the home page alone

Backlink question
Hi all.
Here's the scenario.
There is a company who provide financial services to their online clients. On ALL their clients sites they have a "payments-by-us" style logo with backlink to their homepage domain name. This means they have over 3,000 links from a multitude of non-related websites - with just 3 or 4 anchor text keywords in these backlinks.
No surprise they have been hit by Penguin
My questions
- What it the best practice for these type of linking LOGO's.
- Should they link to a dedicated page, and NOT the homepage?
- Should they have branded + anchor text, no text, or just branded? or a combination of each
- Should they even be a link at all as they are coming from such a diverse group of sites?
- I understand how Penguin penalises for overuse of money word keywords as anchor text. This is something that has definitely happened here (by the bucket load) ... Assume the anchor text is "Green Chips Finance" and that phrase is also overused and a bit "stuffy" in their homepage. Here's my question - could simply lowering the prominence / significance of "Green Chips Finance" on the actual home page, help in reducing the impact of the damage caused by the thousands of backlinks with "Green Chips Finance" as the anchor text?
I say this as they have a similar number of back links saying "Red Chips Finance", but there is no mention of "Red Chips Finance" on their homepage other than in the keywords and a couple of standard text mentions (no H1, H2, alt text etc) ... interestingly, "Red Chips Finance" (not the real words) is Google No1 whereas "Green Chips Finance" has been demoted from longtime No1 to about 4.
Cheers

Have had years looking at effects of SEO on my own businesses.. built up a very successful business from 1999 to 2011. Was hit by Penguin in 2012 and had to take huge remedial action to fix things. Have now sold business and moved to full time SEO consultancy.
