Hello,

One my the sites I work with, http://www.oransi.com, has seen a significant decrease in crawl Googlebot activity in the last 90 days. See screenshot.

This decrease in crawl stats runs in conjunction with less Kb downloaded per day & an increase in how much time it took Google to download a page.

The client did just go through a redesign, however that happened on 4/16/15, which was after the decrease in Googlebot activity, so that should not be the issue. Same could be said for the mobilegeddan algorithm change.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this question, but there's no way to compare month to month- or bounce a monthly report, correct? While custom date ranges would be really useful, even if I could just bounce a report at the end of the month and be able to compare month over month (without having to do so manually) would be an incredible enhancement. As it stands, Moz is a great tool for my internal purposes- but as far as reporting for clients it doesn't help me very much at all, as I generally prefer to present most data monthly. Thanks!

I really hope so and that it happens soon. This is a feature that, in my view, significantly hinders the usability of the tool, and would probably be the reason we move off of it if we do. Love the data, just needs more flexibility with how to use it.

Thanks for your response. The domain name is www.Oransi.com and I did use Tamara's advice, which worked for the most part. Certain variables came into play that I wasn't expecting, but overall that did fix my issue. However, if you could indeed suggest to the V13 product team about using product names as H1s, I believe your clientele would benefit indeed.

So I'm working with a client who has no heading tags on his site and I'm wondering if there is an ideal method to implementing these on the product pages specifically, as the wording I ideally want to specify is is the product title, which i can't really code with an H1.

Has anyone run into this issue? If so, what was your solution?

Also, how vital are these heading tags on the product pages, anyways?

I'm actually not having a problem with it per se.  A client I'm working with swears that he was penalized for changing his title tags, and thus was very upset when I optimized his into 2013 SEO conventions.  I had never heard of this kind of penalty and wanted to check in with people and see if they've experienced anything like it- because I'm pretty certain that's not a thing at all.

How often do you guys update title tags?

I'm certain of the answer to this question, however I wanted to get some input from the experts in Moz-land to hopefully provide some additional perspective.  I recently disagree with a client's assertion that there is some penalty Google levels for changing the title tags of your home page.  Now, I understand changing the title tags can influence serp rankings, however, is anyone aware of some penalty Google levels for simply changing the title tags?  Most of what I've read and experienced has people changing them all the time without some phantom penalty.  It seems to me a problem of correlation = causality, in that people often attribute a drop to an action that may not have actually been the cause.

Anyway, if you have any particular insight on this top I would appreciate it greatly.

That's great- I was thinking of trying something similar.  One follow up though, were the sub content pages actually "pages" or were they accessible only through refinement.

For example, if we're talking about "Orange Shoes" - did you actually have a page for Orange Shoes, or is it accessible just by refining Orange shoes from the shoes category?

So part of it is that I'm a little wary of deleting those pages, but also that the search-refinement won't be SEO friendly either.

I don't think I explained it very well, but yes, the second thing you said.  In implementing the search refinement I would be replacing the landing pages with sub-content pages that can be drilled into and my concern is that I will lose the working SEO on those pages. Even though they aren't very user friendly, they're generating some long-tail traffic.

This restructuring is happening in conjunction with a store redesign so it's not as if I'm just implementing it for the heck of it. This is step 1 in a large project, and I don't think tightening up the category structures will considerably improve user experience without search refinement- but in implementing search refinement I'm trying not to demolish the SEO too.

i have an interesting scenario I'd appreciate some feedback on.  I'm working on restructuring a client site for a store design, and he had previously built a bunch of landing pages mostly for SEO value- some of them aren't even accessible from the main nav and contain a lot of long-tail type targets. These pages are generating organic traffic but the whole thing is pretty not user-friendly because it's cumbersome to drill down into specific categories (that many of the landing pages fulfill) without going through 3 or 4 pages to get there. For example, if I want to buy orange shoes, i can see specific kinds of orange shoes, but not ALL the orange shoes, even though there is an SEO page for orange shoes that is otherwise inaccessible from the main navigation.

If that wasn't too confusing, essentially the usability solution to this is implementing some search refinement so that the specific sub categories can be drilled into easily with less steps.

My issue is that I'm hesitant to implement this even though I know it would be an overall benefit to the site, because the existence of these SEO pages and being wary of destroying the organic traffic they're already receiving.

My plan was to see to it that the specific category pages are built with the necessary keywords and content to attract those organic visits, but I'm still nervous it might not be enough.

Does anyone have any suggestions for this circumstance, but also just maximizing SEO efforts on a site with search refinement and how to minimize loss. From a usability standpoint, search refinement is great, but how do you counter the significant SEO risks that come with it?

I have a quick question that I think I know the answer to but I wanted to get some feedback to make sure or see if there's additional feedback.

The long and short of it is that I'm working with a site that currently has a .net domain that they've been running for 6 years. They've recently bought a .com of the same name as well. So the question is:

I think it's obviously preferable to keep the .net and just direct the .com to it. However, if they would prefer to have the .com domain, is 301'ing the .net to the .com going to lose a lot of the equity they've built up in the site over the past  years? And are there any steps that would make such a move easier?

Also, if you have any tips or insight just into a general transition of this nature it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

My client is wondering if I could provide him with a list of his site's 15 Top performing SEO keywords. However, based on the layout of everything I've used here on SEOMoz, I don't believe that's possible. Or, am i incorrect? Can you indeed come up with a list of Top (XX) SEO keywords for a given time period, for a campaign/website?

Well, how do I specify which keywords the pages cater to? It seems like you can only change one keyword (from the top dropdown) on a page basis. Yet, my homepage is telling me I have F-Grades for 'Snowmobile Parts' - 'Water Sport Apparel', for example....but why those (and not any others), when they're set up the exact same way as any of my other keyword combos that are applicable to the homepage?

So, I'm implementing on-page fixes for a site that my company runs SEO services for (www.ShadeTreePowersports.com). However, I was wondering if there was a way to rank a pages' SEO quality, in general?

As of now, it seems like the only way your recommendations can be consumed and altered is on a keyword basis. However, this seems be the reason I have a good amount of my F-Grades.

Since my website sells powersports apparel and accessories, we cover a variety of applicable (but different) keywords like 'Motorcycle parts' or 'snow tubes,' because we sell so many different types of products. But, when I look at my F-Grades - SEOMoz is telling me my homepage is ranking poorly for a multitude of those pertinent keywords - but only because my page isn't catered specifically to each of them (IE: 'Snowmobile Parts' - 'Water Sport Apparel') But, with so many different types of products, catering to a specific one is impossible and would be detrimental.

Is there a way to see how a page ranks, without factoring in those keywords? Or a better way that I can use these recommendations more efficiently?

I'm the copy writer for a marketing firm, who is doing the SEO work for a website that sells wholesale Disney apparel.

I was recently asked to rewrite their homepage blurb, as it was all over the place. However, one thing I'm wondering is if you guys felt the various Disney keyword combinations (IE: Disney Beach Towels, Disney Mugs, Disney Travel Mugs, etc) were necessary for SEO purposes? My site is using search refinement and I am concerned about the URL adding additional characters when it's refined.  My current URL is: http://www.autopartscheaper.com/Air-Conditioning-Heater-Parts-s/10280.htm and when someone chooses their specific year, make, and model then it changes to: http://www.autopartscheaper.com/Air-Conditioning-Heater-Parts-s/10280.htm?searching=Y&Cat=10280&RefineBy_7371=7708.  Will this negatively affect SEO for this URL?  Will the URL be counted twice?  Any help would be great!

Our client would like to include a link break so that part of the product name always showed up on a second line.  Would this affect how Google bots crawl the product name?  Would it also affect how Google would show the product name in a search result page?  Thanks!

Thank you for the response Ryan.  Although the site is not outwardly "hiding" the copy, from a usability standpoint this method does not seem to carry much if any value to the person visiting the page.  I figured Google would see this as a lame attempt at search engine bate and frown upon the practice.

I noticed Moosejaw was adding quite a bit of content to the bottom of category pages via a div tag that makes use of a scroll bar. Could a site be penalized by Google for this technique?
