Reaching a wider audience
City College Plymouth is a large general further education college. We employ approximately 850 members of staff, and are spread over two main campuses (Kings Road and Goschen), plus two technology centres (Camels Head and Estover), the Learning Warehouse and Martin’s Gate. In addition, we have provision based at Deep Blue Sound in the city centre.
Typically, we will have 20,000 full and part-time students enrolling on courses at the College in any one year. While the majority of students are from the Plymouth travel-to-work area, there are also a number of higher education students from across the country, and some overseas students - predominantly from China.
Courses can be short one day or bespoke training courses, through to part or full-time courses running over one or two academic years. Courses range from entry level (for example basic skills), through to higher education and professional development, and not all courses lead to formal qualifications. In addition, while many courses may start at the beginning of the academic year (September), many start at various times throughout the year, some are run on demand and others run on a roll-on-roll-off basis.
The education and training we offer is organised around the following:
• Faculty of Arts and Science - GCSEs, A levels, and vocational qualifications in science, performing arts, media and music
• Faculty of Business and Leisure Industries - business, hospitality and catering, travel and tourism, leisure and sport, and public services
• Faculty of Construction - brickwork, plumbing, plastering, painting and decorating, gas, heating, refrigeration and air conditioning, civil engineering and surveying
• Faculty of Engineering and IT - electrical, marine, mechanical, motor vehicle, welding, IT
• Faculty of Health - hair and beauty, complementary therapies, health, social care, first aid and teaching assistant training
• Faculty of Higher Education
• Faculty of Skills for Life - basic literacy and numeracy, English for speakers of other languages, skills development for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities
• Work-based Learning department - Personalised Learning Programme, Princes’ Trust, Apprenticeships, courses for 14-16 year olds.
Support service areas that are externally-facing, are:
• Community services - training restaurant and brasserie, hair and beauty salons
• Employer Response team - engaging with external organisations to offer training and development solutions (bespoke and government initiatives eg Train to Gain); Apprenticeships; employer forums.
• Human Resources - recruiting staff
• International team - recruiting overseas students
• Learner Support services - additional support to overcome barriers to learning, including dyslexia, physical disabilities
• Partnerships team - managing College provision through external organisations and seeking external funding.
• Student Services and Marketing - run events; press office; course information; provide pre-entry advice and guidance; support applicants through the admissions process; run the College enrichment programme and support the Students’ Union; nursery and childcare provision for students, staff and the local community.
As an educational institution the College has a key role in both the equality and diversity and sustainability agendas. Any promotional mediums should help to reinforce the importance of these to the College, for example to support equality and diversity the intranet site should reflect the needs of a diverse range of customers and stakeholders and be at the forefront of accessibility.
