Hi Mark,

There are several plugins for wordpress that you can use to get around this dupe content issue with tags, categories, author pages etc. The fact that you are running a hosted WP and not your own install means you can't add these extra plugins as far as I am aware. Again using a hosted WP you also can't change the URL structure to a custom one.

So you mention you have a 17 year old site. Is the setting up of the blog on WP to drive traffic and some links to your main site?

Have you considered adding a wp install to your own site, and ading those 18 articles you've written to your site, that way you can take advantage of all the great SEO plugins and optimisie everything as needed.

Hi Justin,

Yes you have to use the code on all pages that are marked as duplicate. So for example if you have 5 pages shoeing as duplicate content you will have one as main page or the master or whatever you want to call it. You tehn place the code supplied by Aaran and Craig in the head section of the other 4 pages.

what about all the domains registered under the same account, so the same whois info. Just wondering how that will play out if I build 5 or so of these sites?

Thanks for that Anthony, I apprecaite your reply. I'm not a black hatter either but when I got started online I started building sites for myself and did all the usual link type stuff, articles, blog posts, comments, profiles etc ( you know the drill ), and as you mentioned I ranked these sites and they have maintained their rank.

I've since moved to doing SEO for other people so now I am much more concerend and aware of building links from these types of sites. The last thing I want to do is damage my clients site, even though I have successfully used these types of sites on my own websites.

So, as a director of search, can I ask if your you and your tem use links for web 2.0 properties/article sites etc?

Thanks anthony, It's amazing to think that it's possible to do that with companies spending so much on SEO and online reputation management.tey can then be targeted by links from known spam  c blocks. It's an interesting topic that I'd love to get m,ore clarity on.

Just curious how you know this? for me I've never understood or agreed with all the mentions on here ( an other sites ) about being penalized by Google. It's like SEOs are afraid to create a link on a site that other marketers use for links ( article directories etc ) for fear of being "penalized". It's crazy to think that. Worst case scenario is that they are discounted ( I think you still get a little bit of juice ), even from abused methods like blog comments or forum profiles etc.

I have a personal site that's about 3 years old and been on the 1st page of G for 2.5 years that has nothing but links from "low quality neightbourhoods"

Thanks Geoff. And thanks to Alan for that link I found a section in that post that answers my question

"And your website URL should obviously match your company’s website. Because with the changes to local listings back in October, your Places Page and organic listing will be combined, and Google needs to figure out which ones match up. So don’t list some microsite, and then wonder why your organic listing isn’t displaying the Google Places info."

So I'll use the brand website as all the SEO is done for that site and i'll want to appear in the blended results nicely. Thanks for your help Geoff, got you on twitter!

Hey, thanks for that Geoff, i appreciate that.  Alan, I haven't seen those posts so i'll make sure to check them out (I've got local SEO information overload going on, ha ).

Geoff, on point 1, there's nothing dodgy going on. It's a well known brand name in the industry and all the SEO is for that site whereas the actual company name is different. So I'm wondering whether or not to have that as the company name and then the brand site as the URL.

It's probably not a big deal but just want to make sure I do it the right way

Howdy Local Experts, I'm hoping you can clear up something for me..

I'm setting up some places for a company that's spread across 5 cities. I am creaitng 5 separate locations for this. The company name is not the same as the website name. All the SEO efforts are for the website name ( the brand ) not the parent company name., so...

1. When creating the places do I enter the business name in "company/organisation" and put the brand name in the web site field? Or is it better for seo to have the brand name here as the company name too?

2. Are all 5 listings more or less going to be the same except for the address and phone numbers? I suppose unique photos etc for each location is better here?

3. When creating citations i am essentially going to be building 5 separate "links", one for each place is that correct. So adding the specific location details into the matching state and city business directories etc?

3. The exact business category doesn't accurately show up in the list. Do i select the closest thing here or create custom categories to better match the business.
