Google, Twitter, Foursquare, Yelp - I thought these were mainly for local. GMB for example- isn't that local?

Are there any online directories that an online ONLY store should list itself in?
I watched the Whiteboard Friday Video about this, but didn't hear it deal with directories exclusively.
Should an online only store use online directories- and if so, how? Would there be a NAP involved?

In the Moz Site Crawl, what does "External Links" mean?
I thought I knew what it meant but am finding instances where the value in the column, "Linking Root Domains" is greater than the value in the column, "External Links?"
Thanks!

Doing SEO for single page applications / Prerender.io
My dev and I are migrating an existing multi page application to a single page application with prerender.io.
Does anybody have any experience with doing SEO for single page applications? Any other consequences we should take into account? Anything important to expect.
Any insights would be 10/10 appreciated.

RE: Why is my DA still only 1 :(
Ditto on this answer. Took me a few months (2-3 I believe) before seeing traction on my site, even with incoming links.

Does Google’s Algorithm Populate Answer Boxes with Its Own Independent Research?
If you search 'best games to play for youtube' you get an answer box with answers pulled independently from the article at hand. Here's an image:
Here are all the games from my article, in the order in which they appear. Google's chosen games for Answer Box are bolded:
- Battlefield 1
- Bloodborne
- GTA V
- FiFA 16
- TrackMania Turbo
- Garry’s Mod
- League of Legends
- Call of Duty: Black Ops III
- Tom Clancy’s The Division
- Overwatch
- Just Cause 3
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Brawlhalla
- Rocket League
- Dark Souls III
- Unravel
- Firewatch
- GoldenEye 007 (this was put in as a joke, but coded as an H2 nonetheless)
- Destiny
- Dead by Daylight
- Fallout 4
- Undertale
- No Man’s Sky
- Minecraft
As you can see, Google is choosing which games to display to its searchers.
My Crazy Egg data shows that these were not picked by click volume (each of these H2s are hyperlinked), which means Google must be using some other popularity metric, such as its own search volume data or external sales data.
I wrote this up in a post on my site, for anybody who's curious.

RE: What's the best redirect to use for a newer version of a blog post?
I like the banner idea. Maybe what I'd do is use a canonical so people could still view the article, but then also put in a banner.
-
What's the best redirect to use for a newer version of a blog post?
For example: suppose you have a post "The Best Games to Play for YouTube Gamers in 2016" and you want to make this a yearly series.
Should you 301 the 2016 version to the new 2017 one? Should you use the canonical attribute? If 2016 isn't in the URL, should you make the 2017 one the new URL?

RE: What is your opinion on Alex Becker / Sourcewave?
Yeah definitely not with a client website lol
-
RE: What is your opinion on Alex Becker / Sourcewave?
I most want to see if buying aged domains with a bunch of backlinks and then repurposing them into blogs still works to create an authority website.
Example:
Look at the wayback machine on that.
-
RE: What is your opinion on Alex Becker / Sourcewave?
Thinking about it. I hate how it brings no value to the world though.
-
What is your opinion on Alex Becker / Sourcewave?
This is only meant to be a discussion. Is he legit? Is he too blackhat and the next update may make him a lot less relevant? Is he worth paying attention to?

RE: Just implemented microdata, what should one typically expect?
Just the Search Console results or the structured data testing tool results? Or any other results?
-
Just implemented microdata, what should one typically expect?
Should I expect my rankings to do any weird things over the next couple of days or weeks?

RE: Mozbar Keeps Crashing
Thanks. I tried reinstalling it a few hours ago and that seemed to fix the issue

Mozbar Keeps Crashing
Below are some images. Is anybody else having similar problems?
-
RE: Why do some reputable publishers have problems with their microdata?
Haven't tried that, but that's not a bad idea, thanks. I assumed I wouldn't hear back.
-
RE: Why do some reputable publishers have problems with their microdata?
Basically what I mean is if the validator made by Google isn't validating, that would indicate that the code should be cleaned up right?
-
RE: Why do some reputable publishers have problems with their microdata?
Interesting. Could this mean that the structured data is somehow being blocked. Should the Google Structured Data tool be the gold standard? What does it mean if it can't read the structured data?
-
RE: Why do some reputable publishers have problems with their microdata?
Sure, this is a typical example: https://search.google.com/structured-data/testing-tool#url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.womenshealthmag.com%2Flife%2Fthis-bride-walked-down-the-aisle-with-the-man-who-got-her-fathers-donor-heart
This link won't even get validated in the tool: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/08/10/sports/olympics/gymnastics-parents.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&clickSource=image&module=photo-spot-regionion=top-news&WT.nav=top-news&_r=0
This one is using schema.org markup but its not being recognized in the structured data testing tool: http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/olympics/hope-solos-mistake-helps-colombia-tie-usa/ar-BBvsb4J?li=BBnb7Kz
Hell, check SI.com, it doesn't even use RDF, microdata, or JSON. I don't get it.
-
RE: Why do some reputable publishers have problems with their microdata?
It looks like Women's Health is using RDFa. Why they would be using this instead of JSON-LD or microdata I don't know...
They're not even doing it right according to the google structured data testing tool.
-
Why do some reputable publishers have problems with their microdata?
I'm using the Google Structured Data Testing Tool to test: https://search.google.com/structured-data/testing-tool
NY Times and Women's Health being two good examples.
These two reputable publishers don't seem to have the microdata they've implemented recognized. Are they doing something wrong or is there a problem with the tool?

RE: 8 point decrease in DA, increase in search traffic- should I disavow links?
For anybody who's curious, my editor got a link from an external source pointing to our home page. Her name, next to a link to Edwardsturm.com, must have decreased my site's relevance for the branded keyword of my name. The decrease in rank for this branded keyword happened at the same time that my editor was mentioned in this external source, so I'm assuming they're related. Kind of crazy.
-
8 point decrease in DA, increase in search traffic- should I disavow links?
Would a decrease in DA reflect the need to disavow junk links?
My branded keywords recently bumped down two spots, whereas the keywords which have been bringing me the most traffic have been unaffected.
Site: Edwardsturm.com
DA decrease of 8 over past 3 months.
Keyword "Edward Sturm" recently moved to second spot.

How do companies protect against Adword sabotage?
What's to stop a company from buying a service to click on competitors' adwords thereby frivolously spending companies' ad budgets?

RE: Google only indexed 19/94 images
For anybody wondering, the problem is stemming from me using the Photon CDN by the Jetpack plugin. Photon is great, it really enhances UX, and their support is pretty top of the line, but since I put a lot of work into my post images, I'd like them to be indexed.
I'm going to try switching to AWS, because I see that that's what Moz is using.
-
RE: Why doesn't the Wikipedia homepage have meta tags?
Thank you Matt. I meant to write meta description, completely my fault.
So you're saying Wikipedia's main reasoning, if you had to guess, for them not having a meta desc. would be just because they don't need it?

RE: Google only indexed 19/94 images
Thanks Dan. I've figured out that I'm having problems because I'm using a CDN. I'm finding a workaround to this right now.
-
RE: Google only indexed 19/94 images
Thanks. The strange thing is that it appears that only my post images aren't being indexed. My Facebook and Twitter images are, but the images that appear in the actual post are not, making it seem like this is purely a technical issue.
-
Google only indexed 19/94 images
I'm using Yoast SEO and have images (attachments) excluded from sitemaps, which is the recommended method (but could this be wrong?).
Most of my images are in my posts; here's the sitemap for posts: https://edwardsturm.com/post-sitemap.xml
I also appear on p1 for some good keywords, and my site is getting organic traffic, so I'm not sure why the images aren't being indexed. Here's an example of a well performing article: https://edwardsturm.com/best-games-youtube-2016/
Thanks!

What sort of knowledge differentiates a good SEO from a great SEO?
This is definitely more of a discussion than a clear cut answer.

When Will the OSE Index Increase in Size
It's an amazing tool and the rest of Moz Pro is excellent, but the index is just so small. Does anybody know when we can expect it to increase?

RE: How does one submit data to the Knowledge Graph?
That's true. This compiler is very reputable as well, but it's in a not super popular niche, so bloggers aren't going to be writing about it a ton. It's reputable, but undiscovered.
From my understanding, Google would like all sorts of reputable information for the KG. The question is, with things that aren't as popular, how does one achieve this?
Thanks.
-
RE: How does one submit data to the Knowledge Graph?
Right, but the Knowledge Graph already leverages authoritative sources, such as Wikipedia, so why can't this be one more source?
-
RE: How does one submit data to the Knowledge Graph?
Do you guys think it's possible to e-mail Google and ask to be included in the Knowledge Graph? The company that owns this compiler will likely have connections to them.
-
How does one submit data to the Knowledge Graph?
I'm working with a very reputable open source civic data compiler who'd like to give their data to the knowledge graph for it to be used. Does anybody know where I should start with this?
Or, do you think it's possible to e-mail Google and ask to be included in the Knowledge Graph? The company that owns this compiler will likely have connections to them.

RE: Putting review aggregation in product's navigation
Thanks! I didn't mean in terms of penalization. I was just wondering if the people here thought it would negatively affect conversions, which is what I believe Rand was suggesting.
Sorry, I should have given more backup.

Putting review aggregation in product's navigation
Do you guys think it's a bad idea to put a review aggregation page in a product's navigation? Such as: "Which Brand of Men's Shampoo Is Best for You?"
Rand suggests against it in this Whiteboard Friday as it interferes with a product's funnel, but I wonder if including it in navigation will give a domain and that page increased authority for a head keyword, such as "men's shampoo."
What do you guys think?
