I know it might sound subjective, but we can’t assume that a nofollow link doesn’t provide value. Given that Google can choose to crawl and credit the link if they so choose. I wouldn’t say it does you any harm as the link was placed for a user. If someone found it worthwhile to place the link then maybe there are other opportunities to meet their need for other resources.

RE: PDF Cached by Google, but not showing as link
'Not all links are created equal' but it makes good logical sense to see links like these naturally occur with the above PDF. Yet many 3rd party link databases are limited to how deep they can crawl the web. Google can choose to go as deep as they like and still not show you where they found the citation. So it might not be easy to quantify using link metrics. I’d think of it as more of a trust signal from an authoritative source.

RE: How do you calculate Share of Voice?
That’s a really tough question, which I’m unsure if there’s a correct answer, in other forms of market segmentation, there are boundaries limited by media form or by the channel market etc. but the net is really too broad to gain an exact answer because it’s quite subjective.
If you’re looking more at the competitive environment you could use the moz Keyword Difficulty & SERP Analysis to try and understand rankings vs authority + competition but be mindful that the long tail has many more variants that make it tough to get an exact answer, in the past I’ve looked at syfu to gain an understanding of paid market share based on spend but the limitations are on account structure.
You can look at adwords to gain an understanding of local/ global impressions vs rankings to understand impressions share.
For social Joanne Lord did a great video via distilled about social, I think it was on last month’s free video list.
You can only make an educated guess by pulling as much competitive data from as many sources as you can. Sorry if that’s a bit broad!

Home page canonical issues
I think I’ve got a canonical issue with a client’s site that I’m having problems with
I’ve noticed in their analytics that they receive traffic from themselves.
I’ve used ‘ rel canonical’ throughout the site to avoid any dup issues and I have 301’ed every other variation of the home page I can think of.
I don’t have full access to the back end of the host to control any of the iis as it’s an asp site.
They seem to be getting traffic from their site under the URL of,
I’ve 301 redirected
And 'rel canonical' the home page to www.example.com but still seem to be having the same problem any ideas?
Thanks

RE: Variable alt tags per page
Hi Phillipp
Thank you for your quick reply, yes I was targeting the keywords but relevent to the particular page theme. I didn’t want to use too many images over the entire site as the subject matter is a lot more text based so finding images would be difficult.
But I take your piont and will give it some further thought!
Many thanks,
Farky

Variable alt tags per page
I have a site where most of the pages don't use images. i use the logo on each page as part of the header.
As the header is on each page, if i added a keyword into the alt tag, relevant to the specific page as below
Would that be bad SEO?
Thanks,
Farky
