I have an element from ringcentral that is tracked by google analytics, yet for the life of me I cannot figure out to how to view the entrance keywords to that element. I can view the search metric and see which keywords and how many visits from each keyword onto the site in general, but how do I see which keywords were actually responsible for this 'click to call' code which has GA? I can see the total number of clicks into that code, but not which keywords led to it.

RE: Using mlm and 'scammy' websites to identify brand/reputation management opportunities
Syed
Do you think it would follow then, that a company that devotes a LOT of time to create such garbage articles has 'something to hide'? I know this is a bit off-topic but that's something I think as both a consumer AND an SEO person. I.E. if someone's spraying water, there must have been a fire.

Using mlm and 'scammy' websites to identify brand/reputation management opportunities
I think this almost warrants a youmoz post, but I was wondering if anyone has used MLM or 'shady' industry companies to see where they place their reputation/brand links to dominate the first 2-3 pages of google for things like 'company name + scam' 'company name + reviews'. On a side note what is your opinion of a company that goes to great lengths to create a very strong push to control those keywords? Would you recommend your clients dominate the first 2-3 pages with 'honest review about company x' and 'the truth about company x' fakeditorials? Do you guys think people see right through them.
Take any MLM..for instance
legal shield scam (not my company, but an MLM that I am very wary of)
as professionals what do you think of their reputation management build out......what do you think consumers would see when they read this? is there such a thing as going to far to refute false claims and building sponsored reviews? I'm personally against doing sponsored reviews and spamming with them, but maybe I am naive.

Google+ Business Profile, Places, Company, or Brand
We have a company with 2 offices, 1 on each coast. I was wondering what would be the best way to create a google+ business page for this to maximize them? We'd like to show a nationwide presence with 2 offices. Are there any downsides to picking any 1 of these?
To clarify, there are 3 choices: local business, brand, and company. Which of the 3 would you recommend for a company with a nationwide presence and 2 offices?

That seems really vague but the rock bottom seems to be around $15/published post on a PR2 blog.

RE: List Quick and Dirty places to seo-tag images/content for new brands
Thanks for your help that's a great idea regarding the blogs - 2 questions, 1. would I just need to alt-tag the image and that's it? or would I have to write a blurb on the blog post to discuss a topic that is related and insert the brand's name into the title of the post, and somewhere in the text as well?

Here are the ones I follow AND have gone to personally, and can vouch for.

Distilled is going to be the speaker at the next SEMNE event. Great meetups in Framingham, the other two are smaller but also really nice in Cambridge near MIT usually.

RE: Duplicate exact match domains flagged by google - need help reinclusion
Link profile and exact match. I was able to grab the equivalent of plumberlosangeles in every major city in the country. They were #1 for new york, la, houston, philly, etc.....This was a 7 figure gross generating adventure.
-
RE: Duplicate exact match domains flagged by google - need help reinclusion
What value? Same as ServiceMagic for instance...........We have as much right to be in a city as a local 'plumber'. What does a user in Montana care if the website looks the same as the one in New York?
-
RE: Duplicate exact match domains flagged by google - need help reinclusion
They're split up over 5-6 hosts...but identical WHOIS info......so there's maybe 20-30 per hosting account.
-
RE: Duplicate exact match domains flagged by google - need help reinclusion
No, they were red flagged on Webmaster Tools. It says your site has violated google guidelines.
I'm guessing that means its a manual penalty?

List Quick and Dirty places to seo-tag images/content for new brands
I'm helping a new brand (service industry) to try to dominate the first page for their own name. They have a name that also exists in another state AND a negative Yelp review which (shows up #4, whilst they show up #1 on google unpersonalized search).
Aside from Linkedin/Facebook/twitter, what are good places to Tag Images and have them show up under the search for this company's name. This is a picture/heavy industry (jewelry) and I'm looking to create profiles on several sites that would immediately show up if I tag the content properly. Are quora/pinterest good choices? I need to grab-bag as many properties as possible.
Secondary question: would these properties on quora etc, respond well to exact-match anchor text links to shoot them past the negative yelp rating that is showing up #4 for their brand?

Beaten to death but still have to ask, low comp area spammy directory links
I have a client that wants to rank for low comp local keywords (i.e. service + suburban area). Would several well written blog posts on relevant blogs be more effective than 100's of low level spammy directory links? I just want to give him an initial base of a few links, aside from submitting to the local search engines such as those in whitespark citation finder..... please keep in mind this would be a low competition area where on-page would probably rank in the middle of the 2nd page.

How long until Social Spam achieves the same notoriety/problem as Link Spam used to be
What are people's thoughts on whether or not social spam will become a major problem soon, just like forum profile/blog comment spam, etc, and what do you think the search engines will do about companies that are blatantly gaming the social signals game
I.E. since social proof seems to be google's answer to combating anchor text manipulation and content farms, what do you think will be google's answer to combating the rampant social spam that will surely overtake us.

How to find article sites that will be very picky
I'd like to write good, unique content, and one of the places i was looking at was article repositories. I do understand that most of them have been spammed to death, but I was wondering how I would go about finding ones that would accept my article. I do realize that niche news/forum/informational sites are probably my best bet. Beyond that, would would be a step down or a 'general' article directory where I could get something approved and post content that is high quality. I'm not sure I have time to go around to every niche site and make the handshakes necessary at this time.

Reciprocal linking with same niche in another country
I was wondering if it was still a viable strategy to pull up 'your keyword' on google.uk or google.au, and email all the top ranking sites or call them and personally ask them to reciprocally link to you. Do these links still hold any value in google's eyes? Or is this a well known strategy that no longer holds any weight and is a waste of time?

Anchor text on outbound links on a blog, relevancy detrimental or positive?
We have a blog related to computer support, and we have been using guest posts and promotion of those posts to boost freshness and rankings of the blog. We have been restricting outbound links to prevent words such as 'computer repair, 'computer support' etc, because we were under the impression that if we want to rank for those words, we should only allow INCOMING links with that anchor text, and that outbound links from the page, would rob the other parts of the site of the link juice this page provides. My question is, is this wrong? Should I freely allow outbound links on my blog page that contain anchor text that I my self am trying to rank for? Or was I correct initially? Current the anchor text is in 'related' industries, such as mobile apps, technology news, etc...things that google might think are 'related', but not exactly what the site is about.

Possibly a dumb question - 301 from a banned domain to new domain with NEW content
I was wondering if banned domains pass any page rank, link love, etc. My domain got banned and I AM working to get it unbanned, but in the mean time, would buying a new domain, and creating NEW content that DOES adhere to the google quality guidelines, help at all? Would this force an 'auto-evaluation' or 're-evaluation' of the site by google? or would the new domain simply have ZERO effect from the 301 unless that old domain got into google's good graces again.

Getting sites unbanned in bulk
Prior to the Panda update we had 1 main site, and 300 or so satellite sites. The satellite sites all had an identical template with identical content. The satellite sites all got flagged, and the main site persevered.
We'd like to TRY to get all of these sites unbanned in bulk. My question is...how 'DIFFERENT' should these sites be? I know that a real google employee will be looking. All of these sites will be in the same industry...so how 'different' can the content really be? I am going to try to do this in sets of 10 and purchase a different template for EACH city/satellite site, as well as having varying categories, but realistically how doomed/successful do you think this endeavor will be? Any advice? realistic timeline?

I concur with your thoughts...however myblogguest provides UNIQUE content versus the rss scraper plugins I used to use. I hand pick the content I want on a weekly basis.

MyBlogGuest+Wordpress+Onlywire = viable semi automatic blogging?
Do you guys recommend I pursue this combination? I want a semi-automatic (spend a few minutes a day picking interesting blog articles) blog and to automate its promotion. Is there anything else I could be doing?
Also this combination doesn't seem to post to facebook pages well. I'd like to also add buttons to like/tweet/ etc, right on the blog. What are some best practices for this?

Pop up livechat - annoying or better conversions?

RE: Eliminating outbound links for long tail-targeting pages

Eliminating outbound links for long tail-targeting pages
I have a number of pages that rank on the 1st page for highly long tail phrases, despite the pages having outbound links to things like 'privacy policy' 'terms of use', make a payment, etc...all pages that can be accessed from the home page. Do you recommend I eliminate these administrative pages from the long tail-targeting pages, to reduce outbound page rank flow? Does anyone create a different breadcrumb navigation or remove one altogether for pages that are highly targeted to improve their rank?

Ideas for making a mini-content farm more valuable to end users
I run a mini-content farm so to speak - a nationwide computer repair business. We have screened professionals that are specific to one industry. I was wondering if the SEO community would like to offer ideas on how to make this type of site more interesting to end users. What are some things that could be integrated into the site that are 'location specific' that would be of interest to users. I'd like to be able to offer a list of certified, screen, professionals that is searchable by zip code and town. We are planning on showing the quality control rating, as well as current certifications, and a checkbox showing that they were background checked. Customer testimonials are also in the works. Any other ideas?

RE: For Service Sites, having a phone number in meta description ALWAYS a good idea?
Richard
That assumes that 'wanting to buy' is an off or on state inside a person's mind; there are stages in the buying process. A person is nudged along in the process by various techniques in each stage. In the service searches, most of the initial steps have been done for you; the need has been created, the customer NEEDS your service, the question is will they choose you or your competitors; That's where committment and consistency come into play. Get the customer to commit to your brand even a little bit and they're more likely to buy. Every step that you get the customer to take towards you is a step towards a sale, which is why clicking on your site is DEFINITELY a step towards that. So I would say yes CTR is a BIG part of Conversion Rate Optimization.
-
RE: For Service Sites, having a phone number in meta description ALWAYS a good idea?
Click through rate is part of conversion....you've successfully converted a visitor who is picking between 10 websites to click on yours.....by having a better meta description tag.......that's conversion.....
-
RE: For Service Sites, having a phone number in meta description ALWAYS a good idea?
Richard, I disagree that SEO is just all about 'rankings'. Conversion is also a big part of SEO and in fact may be an indirect factor to rankings, since more visitors equates more natural links.......so yes, a higher conversion would be an seo WIN.
-
For Service Sites, having a phone number in meta description ALWAYS a good idea?
If you have a site that offers a same day service, e.g. plumbing, electrical, computer support: do you think it would always be a good idea to stick the phone # in the meta description?

RE: Duplicate exact match domains flagged by google - need help reinclusion
Sorry if i didn't explain
the sites are all service business-related. THey're not ad-sense in any way. They all do haev 100% identical content except for some keyword replacement where the city keyword is. Each site is related to a different city, for example plumber + los angeles, or plumber + new york. Each site has a different phone number, so I AM servicing those areas, however my problem is the duplicate content. The link profiles are very different.

Duplicate exact match domains flagged by google - need help reinclusion
Okay I admit, I've been naughty....I have 270+ domains that are all exact match for city+keyword and have built tons of back links to all of them. I reaped the benefits....and now google has found my duplicate templates and flagged them all down. Question is, how to get the reincluded quickly?
Do you guys think converting a site to a basic wordpress template and then simply using 275 different templates and begging applying each site manually would do it, or do you recommend.
1. create a unique site template for each site
2. create unique content
any other advice for getting reincluded? Aside from owning up and saying, "hey i used the same template for all the sites, and I have created new templates and unique content, so please let me back".

Using 1 main site for many branch office locations
I have 1 main site with many many city/state pages within the site. I would like to use this site as the 'website' on the google local places pages for all my branch office locations, however I am worried that if my domain authority isn't high enough for the site, google will think I am spamming 'google places'. Are there any best practices I can follow to do this? Ideally I would like my blended search to show

RE: Am I missing something?
I didn't mean it like that......but honestly i'm stumped......
-
RE: Am I missing something?
unrelated anchor text in places with lots of oubound links = NO rankings........so there's something else ranking him that OSE missed??? The only factor OSE doesn't count is domain age.
Also, tell us the seomoz keyword difficulty of the keywords this guy is ranking for that are the 'money' keywords.
-
RE: Am I missing something?
I'm not sure what the money keywords in your industry are, but the guy doesn't have any link anchor text to speak of in the OSE profile, and his few backlinks are not high quality so its doubtful he is ranking for anything. Also, he's nowhere to be found on SEMrush.
Most likely what's happening is you've clicked on his site so many times, google has personalized your search and pushed his site to the top of the results for YOU ONLY. Try logging in with a different browser or running the seomoz keyword difficulty tool for the keyword that you think he ranks highly and see if he shows up.

RE: Factors affecting google places citation indexing
Saibose
The authority sites are fairly established in most areas. They're the citygrid sites like merchant circle, citysearch, etc, also yelp, hotfrog, botw. Then there's the secondary yellow pages like superpages.com, yellowbook, angieslist, brownbook.
The question I'm asking is how to get those sources to STICK once you know what they are.
-
RE: Did Google's Farmer Update Positively/Negatively Affect Your Search Traffic?
actualy I lost about 10 places on my main keyword; strangely NO other keywords were affected and long tail traffic did not get adjusted as well.

Factors affecting google places citation indexing
I'm sure we have all been there; filling out yellowbook/yahoo/citysearch/merchant circle citations flawlessly, only to wait months and months for google to decide if they're worth 'attaching' to your places listing.
I still believe that the number one factor for getting them to stick is consistensy of information, however my question is what factors affect the speed of 'stickiness'.
I've implemented google alerts and rss feed/link pinging services to get citations from hotfrog and BOTW indexed almost the same day, however after examing the google places listing, I'm not showing them as listed as citations; which leads me to my next point; that google places could possibly have their own 'indexing rules and speed?'
I've heard several suggestions on how to accelerate indexing, and quite a few of them included building backlinks TO these citations to improve pagerank. Do mozzers have any 'foolproof' ways of getting these citations to 'stick' to google places listings within days, or weeks, instead of months?
-
RE: Did Google's Farmer Update Positively/Negatively Affect Your Search Traffic?
no, and I noticed that merchantcircle, one of their 'top 25 biggest losers' still ranks quite well for long tail service-industry queries.

RE: Does Frequency of content updates affect likelyhood outbound links will be indexed?
saibose...do you think a service like linklicious? (link->rss) would work?
-
RE: Does Frequency of content updates affect likelyhood outbound links will be indexed?
Thank you guys.
Anthony, I am not sure I agree; indexing and crawling are 2 different things. I guess that is really what I'm getting at here. I can force google to crawl my whole site daily (or almost daily) with rss feeds, sitemaps, proper structure, frequent updates, etc....but WILL that freshness of content force google to go hm....despite the page being very insignificant, it might be important enough to go into my index.
Saibose, unfortunately i'm well beyond the 100 link limit....I am noticing quite a bit of the pages that ARE indexed, ARE ranking since they're well optimized through on-page and they are targeting extremely long-tail keyphrases. So my main goal is to convince goal to index these pages because once I do, they will rank.
What I have done so far:
1. Made sure that the page is easily accessible from at least 1 page on the website
2. Create a sitemap (proper sitemap index and several underlying sitemap files).
3. Submitted the sitemaps and increase google crawl rate; (I noted google is crawling around 1700 pages/day on my site.
4. Made sure that the page is at most 3 levels deep. (site/state/city) (we'er talking about city level pages)
5. created proper urls (/site/state/city)
I think maybe I misspoke. I am not doubting that google will 'crawl' the page. What I am asking is if I can't link externally to it, and the internal page rank passed is very small, will adding fresh content and making google think that the page gets updated frequently convince google to index it? Does frequent crawling finally force indexing or is it possible google may say "no matter how often you update this page, its just NOT important enough for me to index it," if noone links to it outside your site.
-
Does Frequency of content updates affect likelyhood outbound links will be indexed?
I have several pages on our website with low pr, that also themselves link to lots and lots of pages that are service/product specific. Since there are so many outbound links, I know that the small amount of PR will be spread thin as it is. My question is, if I were to supply fresh content to the top level pages, and change it often, would that influence whether or not google indexes the underlying pages? Also if I supply fresh content to the underlying pages, once google crawls them, would that guarantee that google considers them 'important' enough to be indexed"
I guess my real question is, can freshness of content and frequency of update convince google that the underlying pages are 'worthy of being indexed', and can producing fresh content on those pages 'keep google's interest', so to speak, despite having little if any pagerank.
