Can Google Read Text in Carousel
so what is the best practice for getting Google to be able to read text that populates via JQuery in a carousel. If the text is originally display none, is Google going to be able to crawl it?
Are there any limits to what Google can crawl when it comes to JavaScript and text? Or is it always better just to hardcopy the text on the page source?

RE: SEO moz poor rankings reporting
This is Scott with IWS --
I see what you are saying...would you say we can rely on the reporting we get to be accurate then, or are you suggesting we double check using the keyword tool or a third party tool?
I hope you can see that i as the owner, find this a bit cumbersome to review when my SEO team presents me with things that don't reflect reality...and this is not the only time this has happened. . I don't know why Google changed things either...but its important to me to get accurate rankings for all our customers without having to use multiple tools. We manage many clients so we really planned on your system being our solution...if you have another recommendation please let me know. Thanks. And thanks for such a good reply.

SEO moz poor rankings reporting
How are we supposed to send ranking reports to clients if the rankings are constantly reporting false metrics
This is not the first time this has happened, but the rankings are WAAAAAAY off. What is the point of reporting rankings that are not accurate? What is the possible cause of this. Is there a solution? What is SEOmoz doing to improve their ranking programs.
Our client actually ranked #2 for "northern Virginia HVAC contractors" when moz had us not in the top 50!
How are we supposed to bank on information that is so consistently unreliable?

Migrating a very large site
hello,
we are thinking about changing imageworksstudio.com to imageworkscreative.com
we have TONS of of pages and want to make sure that our Page Rank and Rankings are maintained. Are there any best practices or specific guides for redirecting for such a large site (which already has a bunch of redirects in place in the first place)
Thanks!

Total link graph question
how is it that our website and our two competitors basically have the exact same link graph, except for at different levels?

RE: Do GoogleWacks still exist?
my guess is they would have to be pretty longtail these days.

RE: Yahoo Showing Adwords URLS in Organic Results
woops forgot link to forum post - here it is!

Yahoo Showing Adwords URLS in Organic Results
a client is getting adwords campaign url's showing up high in the SERPs, like 2 spots under the original page.
The actual unique page is number one, and number three is the same page except the url is pulled from and adwords click
My guess is that yahoo is crawling adsense and mistakenly following it as a link. It's crazy that it ranks on the 3rd page though...
At the same time I have recently seen 25 pages deindexed in Google!
How could this happen - could these two be related. I read this forum post about similar things happening in yahoo to their site
Could this be a duplicate content issue (copyscape is showing no duplicate content) or are my pages getting indexed for some other reason?

RE: Applying for an SEO position
SEO's are looking for you to convert, and not just be able to do SEO
Things that will help your case:
- being fluent in HTML and CSS would definitely help your case, as well as having fmailiarity with CMS's like wordpress and drupal
- Being an outstanding writer
- Having experience with AdWords (and maybe even adsense)
- Being a problem solver
- Having heavy industry involvement
- Know how to get leads from twitter (or at least get followers)
- Being an expert at onsite optimization
- being able to tell which strategies are going to be able to pan out in the short run and in the long run
- knowing your SEO tools in and out
I encourage you to try to code up your own site (even if it is extremely simple) and get it up on the web. Perhaps even put your resume up

RE: Guest Blog Posting : Is that all it is made out to be?

Redirect or Rewrite? 2 pages ranking
We have two pages ranking for "Custom Web Design"
http://www.imageworksstudio.com/custom-web-design
ranks higher (consistently 9-13)
and
http://www.imageworksstudio.com/content/custom-web-design
ranks around 35-40
the latter is actually an older version of the article that never was replaced or taken down - but it has the majority of the links to it
Wondering if we should update the old content so it is not similar to the one that is ranking better or if we should redirect everything to /custom-web-design to see if it can secure better rankings?

RE: I must be tripping. How is this site ranking for the term "SEO Company"??????

Haha. I'm just kidding of course

RE: Having Content be the First thing the bots see
it should only be the first line as h1, not the content. We styled it all the same so it didn't look silly. WE did make local cities h2....not sure if that's good or bad...but it stinks to serve so many cities and only rank at your physical location. Especially when there are 20 cities with in 20 miles here in DC metro.
Not sure if local "city pages" will work or how that changes the landing page experience verse a very interactive home page...Google didn't think about all of that!
-
RE: Having Content be the First thing the bots see
well....darn...its on the footer pretty much. Check out imageworksstudio.com
(about tab, lower left)
Thing is...you don't really want to spam up your site with content on a home page, as a branding firm we prefer short clear messaging that is focused on customer pain points, value props etc. Of course these are images and not really seo relevant anyways. Grrr - double edged sword.
Thanks again. I appreciate your comments.
-
RE: Having Content be the First thing the bots see
That's what I thought too....but I'm old school SEO and have no idea if this has changed! Thanks.
-
Having Content be the First thing the bots see
If you have all of your homepage content in a tab set at the bottom of the page, but really would want that to be the first thing Google reads when it crawls your site, is there something you can implement where Google reads your content first before it reads the rest of your site? Does this cause any violations or are there any red flags that get raised from doing this? The goal here would just be to get Google to read the content first, not hide any content

SEO dead?
What does everyone think about this article?
http://www.forbes.com/sites/kenkrogue/2 … l-content/
I tend to think its off base, Link building still works and there are tons of things that have to do with SEO that have nothing to do with link building...
I think its actually quite ridiculous and written by people that actually no nothing about SEO...kind of a lame attempt by Forbes, and if anything at all, this is just forbes practicing "SEO" with a link attraction post like this. Becase SEO, is NOT dead

RE: SIte Redesign - Disaster for Organic Traffic
i dunno how it is for everyone else, but the site was really slow to me. Try using different image formats instead of png's. maybe try jpg's?
we had this as a problem, made a few changes, and our site speed went up instantaneously
other thing is make sure your CSS and javascript are in external files when can be, although its usually the images and other media that are playing the major role in site speed

RE: Anyone have any experience with freelance graphic designer sites?
99 designs is cool. Traditional graphic designers don't like it htough. Compare em to sweat shops, and say things like "you have to worry about if its copied work on sites like those"
however it depends what you are trying to do!

RE: Article Falls After Maintaining ranks for years. Page penalty?
http://www.imageworksstudio.com/blog/how-set-marketing-budget-your-smb/index.html
its up to number 7. We updated it in April of this year to bring it current and added some new changes. This post BTW has been featured in a NYT best selling business book.
-
RE: Article Falls After Maintaining ranks for years. Page penalty?
its not a rewrite by the way. It's the original article. wondering if OTHERS that have rewritten it could be one of the reasons
-
RE: Article Falls After Maintaining ranks for years. Page penalty?
marketing budget
we used to rank 3-5 on this term, got many of our visitors from it. It still ranks number one for setting a marketing budget.

Article Falls After Maintaining ranks for years. Page penalty?
Hello,
I have had an article consistently rank between 3-5 for the last two plu syears now. Recently it dropped down to 11-13. All I did was add my Google plus picture to it.
I have been hearing things along the lines of content rewrites. I am well aware of the fact that there are many duplicates of my article are out there. Is this the legitament problem though? Those articles have links to my sites.
I have even found other articles that link to my article that have been duplicated. So there's all sorts of duplicate syndication out there. Wondering if I should start asking people to take down my article.
Any info on recent Google activity on this subject?

RE: Does google detect all updated page with new links
yeah def. But what may seem like legitimate and white hat webmaster to webmaster outreach clearly also resembles paid links. Just hoping to not get penalized for something that represents something else. Which seems harder and harder with every algo update
-
Does google detect all updated page with new links
as paid links?
Example: A PR 4 page updates the page a year later with new links. Does Google discredit these links as being fishy?

RE: Which are the best directory submission sites: UBL.org, localeeze.com, web-listings.net, other?
localleze I have personal experience with. I could give you the lowdown on what websties are powered by localezae if you wanna send me an email - it's not a directory submission service, but used for building citations. And is for helping you with your localmaps.
I have never used yext before, but they look sweet, and you should check them out as you get a free citation grader
-
Please I need some optimism for this (not provided)
Does anyone see this getting any better. It is getting absolutely ridiculous and almost to the point where it looks like soon analytics will be pointless!
Can Rand pull some connects and tell Google - Hey Camon! This is ridiculous, we need to see at least a little bit more of these!
-
RE: Why is Bing Showing Insurance Ads For Link Building Searches?
i im guessing because insurance is a huge opportunity for affiliates! Just a guess though!
-
RE: When is link building an SEO priority? (vs. something else)
check out yext.com. Citations are more important for local factors than link building. Manual link building almost becomes too tough and time consuming unless you are running your own affiliate gateways or running your own website where top position in the SERPs means A LOT, and you don't have to spend a lot of time talking with clients, making business deals - you know the whole 9 yards for agency stuff
-
RE: Google Places Question
just do whatever it is the business does. Then use Yext or Whitespark & localeze to get your citation game tight. Go to yext right now and use there free citation grader tool. You will not regret it!

Where is the Real Value in SEO?
Interesting topic and would love to hear some thoughts. How do you justify SEO, measure results, etc etc

RE: Best tools for exploring links?
thanks, been using majestic SEO - pretty sweet actually as it has been finding links from 2007 that were actually broken so i could fix them
-
Best tools for exploring links?
and not just every single link, but ones you know that Google is actually indexing. I find seomoz to be super easy, but there is no way to distinguish links that are actually counting "juice", or am i missing something.
What about majesticseo - any other similar tools you use when trying to find linking sites that pass juice?
-
RE: Alexa Rank and Linking from Article sites.
Why wouldn't you submit to multiple high ranking content directories sites? If a few pick you up great....
Are you worried of a dupe content penalty? Are you using C tags to avoid this?
-
Redirect old broken link or ask for HREF change?
found some broken links from 2007 to our site pointing to a url that needs a redirect. Obviously I am going to set that up (in-case there are others out there i don't find pointing to the same URL) but should i also reach out to the webmaster and ask him to update the link, or will the redirect suffice?
I don't want it to look like a paid link when in fact it is completely natural

RE: Affiliate program in the education niche
anyone that knows a good one isn't going to give it up!
I would checkout http://www.onlinemba.com/
and http://www.medicalbillingandcoding.org/ to get started and see what kinda competition is at the top
very competitive niche

Directory VS Article Directory
Which got hit harder in penguin update. I was looking at SEER Interactive backlink profile (the SEO company that didn't rank for it's main keyword phrases) and noticed a pretty big trend on why it might not rank for its domain name.
SEER was in a majority of anchor text, many coming from directories.
i'm guessing THEY were effected because they matched the exact match domain link profile rule
I'm not an expert programmer, but if i was playing "Google Programmer" I would think the Algo update went something like.
If ((exact match domain) & (certain % anchor text==domain) & (certain % of anchor text== partial domain + services/company)) {
tank the rankings
}
So back to the question, do you think that this update had a lot to do with directories, article directories, or neither.
Is article directories still a legit way to get links. (not ezine)
-
You notice rankings go up when..
you link out to wikipedia?
I feel there are always benefits to linking out to authority sites like this
-
RE: Have I been penalised?
your going to need to give a little more info about your tactics, link building, etc.
-
RE: How do you determine the level of an SEO
people know what link building is, but have they ever done it - and has it ever actually helped them? I think there a lot of factors that go into it.
-How influential are you on your industry?
-What kind of SEO do you do?
-Do you do SEO for yourself, or for your clients?- A Gazzilion more things to consider
So many different angles at SEO, hard one to pinpoint, but people that have been there and done that. An expert would definitely be someone that is making money for themselves off of their own SEO expertise. Beginners and Intermediates fall short of that.

Facebook Timeline Apps
Hello, I was just wondering pretty much what the difference between a static HTML page for your timeline is and what the apps are. Is this something that is going to be wildly popular. What should one focus on when creating these static pages or custom apps?
It seems like outreach and insights is going to be big for Timeline as well. What are the best practices for switching over in a timely manner while staying somewhat slightly ahead of the game?

Linking Adwords to Analytics for Multiple Clients
what is the best practice for this? Right now everything is under many different passwords and logins, yet conforming them all to one comes with a bunch of loopholes and bumps along the way.
Does anyone know how to get a few clients under the same username and password (linking the AdWords and Analytics for each of them)?

Content Stacking - CSS positioning
I was curious to know what everyone thinks about CSS positioning so that the spiders will read a optimal bulk of content first - before it reads the others. Say I have some Tab's set up for navigational purposes, where the content in the last tab is actually what I want the bots to see first. What would be the best practices for accomplishing something like this?

RE: Buying Traffic?
ty Dignan99. We concur on the campaign ideas you mention...we are looking at this as supplemental.
-
RE: Buying Traffic?
Let me clarify. We are all set with growing organic visitors for likes....but like direct mail sent to a large demographic, it is hard to discount that buying 5,000 or more from any type of reputable service is a bad thing, unless the list is bogus or comes of misleading and causes brand damage.
I mean if i could buy a 50k list of SMO CEOs and execs and 80% of them left, i would still have a good target to nurture. So, i guess we are wondering if anyone else had tried the mass market approach to build their "opt in" likes/list/followers
-
Buying Traffic?
Hi Everyone,
Has anybody ever bought traffic using a site like visitorboost.com?
What are your thoughts? What other services are there?
We are trying to supplement our "like/follower" campaigns, while we wait on our organic methods to build followers. Think of a HVAC company just starting out in social....they dont have time to build and nurture a list, (although we will for the future) they need sales now...so they trun to radio, print ads, etc.
If we could buy thousands of followers in a demographic that made sense and it was affordable, is it worth a try to get the word out?
Thanks in advance guys!
