RE: Being Link Attacked - Should I worry?
Thanks for the response Jesse!
Ok damn, there goes my Friday morning
I didn't see any article submissions, just comments, and a lot of them were not even followed. I haven't looked into it too much though.
This is a real shame, I hope I don't keep asking loads of companies to do it, could start getting quite boring.
Thanks again for the information, I'll start digging around tomorrow.
P.S. Any tips on getting these guys to respond to me? Legal letters perhaps?

RE: Why no video thumbnail?
I am having issues trying to remove the video snippet, I think it could all be related as I just read this http://searchengineland.com/google-authorship-bug-affects-very-few-sites-actively-working-on-a-fix-167167
Also, it's not guaranteed to show anyway. But if it was showing before I'm not sure why it would just disappear.
I reckon it's something to do with Google in my opinion.

Being Link Attacked - Should I worry?
Hey,
Hope everyone is well.
Just a quick question. I hope to get an answer from Google officially (I've asked in their webmaster forums area) but any experience or opinions from the community here would be great.
I noticed recently that our site started to get thousands of links from comments in random blogs from all across the web. This is nothing to do with us as we don't "build links".
I can only assume it is a competitor trying to get our site hit by the algorithm for a particular search term, as all the anchor text (I estimate about 1,800 links with this anchor text) point to one page on our site that is ranking for that term.
I recently removed the website from webmaster tools and re added, due to an unrelated issue about the a video rich snippet not updating, and all the links have just popped up today on there.
Is this something I need to worry about? and should I start collecting all these domains and using the disavow tool to block the whole domain of these sites with the comments (some of them seem like genuine sites).
There seem to be new ones everyday and it looks to be an ongoing attack as well.
Thanks in advance!

RE: Link juice retained when using nofollows?
Yup Paddy is right.
I would read this blog post about PageRank Sculpting that Matt Cutts wrote http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/pagerank-sculpting/
And I also found this video useful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4IE4WLPLZQ&feature=share&list=PL841CB8F9F31BF5D5

RE: Link juice retained when using nofollows?
In your example the links that do not have the nofollow attribute would get 20 each.
Well actually it would be something like 19.5 each because they take a tiny bit off everytime it's passed on (otherwise the system wouldnt work mathematically).
Paddys Displays is correct, ignore what I'm saying if I'm confusing you - apologies.
-
RE: Link juice retained when using nofollows?
Link Juice or PankRank is shared between all the links on your page equally that don't have nofollow on them.
I found this video which still seems relevant http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-matt-cutts-on-nofollow
I hope that helps you.

RE: 9600 exact searches position 3 but only 125 clicks????
I thought google changes the meta discriptions depending on what the user is searching for.
Is this not true in all cases then?
-
RE: 9600 exact searches position 3 but only 125 clicks????
That's interesting. I checked out my webmasters account and it's similer for me. We're UK based as well.
Perhaps we just need to take these numbers with a pinch of salt.

RE: Directories in the linkbuilding strategy
There are a few good ones. Check out the link profile of www.housebuyfast.co.uk (my website) for an idea of the ones I have used.

RE: Tips For Promoting Content & Contacting Journalists
Bump on this!
Trying to contact journalists on Twitter. Quite hard actually, I'm going to try and call some on Tuesday (bank holiday weekend) and perhaps try some direct marketing techniques.
Got some free samples off www.popupmailers.co.uk. If it works out I'm going purchase.

RE: Tips For Promoting Content & Contacting Journalists
Yup, that's all added thanks
We're on all the social media websties, with markup and on page SEO all done.
I'm just looking for some tips to push through, we get regular visits, do some great content, it's just not pulling in the traffic and leads

Tips For Promoting Content & Contacting Journalists
Hey,
After months of working hard we have some great content on our website, and now seem to be getting into a flow of releasing content consistently.
I think it's now time to shift a bit of focus onto getting more eyes lookng at it, and importantly the right eyes.
Has anyone got any tips or advice?
Kind Regards

Recommendation For Video Intro & Outro Creatives
Hello,
I am looking for recommendations of a company or individual that can create a quick intro and outro clip for our company videos.
I'm not totaly sure on how much something like this should cost, and we don't have millions to spend (unfortunately), but your suggestions and recommendations will be much appreciated!
Thanks

RE: Robots.txt best practices & tips
Thanks for the detailed answer Paul!
Do you think there is anything I should block for a wordpress website? I blocked /admin.

Robots.txt best practices & tips
Hey,
I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on whether I should block the robots.txt file from the average user (not from googlebot, yandex, etc)?
If so, how would I go about doing this? With .htaccess I'm guessing - but not an expert.
What can people do with the information in the file? Maybe someone can give me some "best practices"? (I have a wordpress based website)
Thanks in advance!

RE: PHP Framework Question! Zend, CakePHP, Symfony, CodeIgniter. Finally I get to ask something.
Yeah very good point!
I was just wondering because I'm still in the learning stage of PHP I can see how quickly the code can get out of control!
I think SEOmoz use CakePHP when I was nosing at their jobs page. A lot of people reccommend CodeIgniter on StackExchange as well, so I might check that out.
I better start learning to use one of these then. Can I ask you to let me know which one you go for please?
-
RE: PHP Framework Question! Zend, CakePHP, Symfony, CodeIgniter. Finally I get to ask something.
Do you think it's essential to use a Framework when building a system like this?
-
RE: Old SPAM tactic still works and gets TOP 3 in SERP?
We have the same problem as well. They've been ranking for a long time with dodgy tactics.
Totally agree with EGOL though, staying clean is the key, play long term!
Lots of good signs in Webmasters with impressions and crawl stats

RE: Any special way to rank a youtube vid in google page 1 for a kw?
Hey,
I think there are a few things to look at when ranking a video on youtube. . .
- Comments
- Video Responses
- Likes & Shares
- Website Embeds
- Title & Description
- Amount Of Views/Duration They Watch The Video For
Thats what I would look at anyway, hopefully someone else will give us their input too

RE: Finding Broken Back Links
I would second the Screaming Frog tool, just used that yesterday and it's great! Might even buy a licence for it now. The free versions great though.

RE: Meta Description: How to Implement It?
Hey,
Unless there is a specific reason for not using a plugin I would install Yoasts SEO plugin. It is much easier to manage all the meta stuff with.
Here is a link: http://yoast.com/wordpress/seo/
It's also totally free

RE: Meta description & Meta keywords
This is very interesting, I'm getting conflicting opinions from the guys here at work and on the Q&A here. Like you say, some major website use the tag as well.
It would be awesome if anyone from Moz has some actual data on this, hint, hint
-
RE: Meta description & Meta keywords
You can read more about the meta discription on the offical google website here
http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=79812
They do use meta description, though bear in mind they don't have to. So you will find that in some rsearch results they will change it.
You can read (and watch a video) about the meta keywords here
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.co.uk/2009/09/google-does-not-use-keywords-meta-tag.html
That's Matt Cutts, who is head of web spam at google.
Hope that clear things up for you!

Analytics (Other Than Google) & A/B Testing Tools
Hey,
I have Google Analytics on my website, like most people, but I was looking at some other analytics and testing tools like heat maps, click maps, A/B, etc.
I was hoping that some of you could recommend a few that you use to see where pages are going wrong, track user behaviour and to how improve conversion rate.
I have had a look at a few websites like:
https://www.clicktale.com/
https://www.optimizely.com/It would also be interesting to know how acurate these tools actually are, they seem quite legit.
Cheers

RE: Interesting spam: Wikipedia trackbacks
Hi Ryan,
I hope you are well.
I had the exact same thing yesterday, by the time I got to the page it had been edited. Well, I'm sceptical it was ever there actually because I could not find it in the edit history.
Funny thing is, is that it was that exact same wiki page! I just deleted it, perhaps Takeshi Young is right then
Someone must be experimenting with that page.

RE: SEO Moz (organic) rankings keep being wrong
I had this issue as well a while ago, but it seemed to have fixed itself.
I spoke to Abe Schmidt about it, so it's worth emailing him on help@seomoz.org.

RE: Is Anyone Else Having Problems With The Ranking On Pro Tools?
I can see a universal result so I assume that's fine.
Did they say when the update was released?
I got the email today with the incorrect rankings and just checked the one that's not correct and it's the same as it was this morning
Perhaps just taking time to update on the system or something
What was the email address you contacted them on?
-
RE: Is Anyone Else Having Problems With The Ranking On Pro Tools?
I thought I was going crazy, thank god haha
I've seen a difference of 11 on one. I was jumping for joy all morning then someone checked
-
Is Anyone Else Having Problems With The Ranking On Pro Tools?
After checking them from the report I was emailed, some of them seem to be incorrect, or is it something my end?
To be fair the majority of them are correct, I'm just querying it.

RE: Wordpress or custom built website?
Thank you so much for both your quick responses, they are great
WordPress is a lot quicker to set up, and has all the functions that we need. Plus millions of plugins that will be extremely helpful, not to mention the quote for a WordPress site we got was about £2000 cheaper!
The only worry I had was that the guy who gave us a quote for the custom build was building a website for a similar company to ours and they were moving away from WordPress. But I guess every website is different and they must need functionality that WordPress can't offer.

Wordpress or custom built website?
Hello fellow mozzers,
Hope you are all well.
I am looking to get a website done and I am struggling to decide whether to get a custom build website site done or a website built on the WordPress platform.
Would you be able to share your experiences and advice/suggestions on what you would use, and why? (pros and cons, etc.)
Thanks in advance.
Kind Regards

RE: Guest Post Blogging And Exchanging Links
Wow, thanks. Beyond the call of duty that!
Yes I did know, I recently hired a trainee in-house SEO who is talking with our web design company and sorting this out at the moment.
There is a lot to do! Though I'm asking him to concentrate on a different site which he just finished building.
Thanks again.
-
RE: Guest Post Blogging And Exchanging Links
I see, well lesson learned there Thanks for sharing the valuable information!
I may do the same with allowing guest posts on our blog now, not that we post that many though.
-
RE: Guest Post Blogging And Exchanging Links
It varys to be honest, about 60/50 at the moment. 60% being websites with a dedicated page asking for guest posts.
I will have a quick look at their back link profile before I send them my content though.
Thanks for the warning though, really becoming clear you have to be so carful!
I hope you managed to sort it out?
