I have a similar issue and found this thread - if the previous url has identical content to the new url, does the redirect solve problems that might arise with duplicate content?

I'm working on a site with a parent page and two minor pages all dealing with the primary/root keyword "log siding"  -  How do I optimize all three pages without bastardization of the primary keyword?

Parent page - keyword: half-log-siding and log-siding

Child Pages (linking from the parent)  cedar-log-siding  and Pine-log-siding.

They all feature "log-siding" and grade well for that keyword (as well as their own long-tail keywords), yet I think based on my rank tracking that Google is unhappy with the multiple pages all (seemingly focused) on log-siding.

Any ideas how I can effectively target all the long-tail keywords within their respective landing pages and not draw a penalty from Google towards my parent page and the root keyword?

I have a situation where a site that was ASP.net has been replaced with a WordPress site.  I've performed a Open Site Explorer analysis and found that most of the old pages, ie

www.i3bus.com/ProductCategorySummary.aspx?ProductCategoryId=63

are returning a HTTP Status = NO DATA ... when followed ends up at the 404 catch-all page.

Can I code the standard 301 Redirects in the .htaccess file for these ASP URLs?

If not, I'm open to suggestions.... Thanks

I'll dig in and see what I can find.

I'm getting access to the FTP and Host Server.

If they have a cPanel I'll look for that.  May need your help later, once I know more what I'm dealing with.

not sure... this site belongs to a friend.  Can I tell from just looking at the html or do I need to access the server/host?

I was setting up a new campaign and received the following error from Roger Robot.

"We have detected that the domain www.sitename.com and the domain sitename.com both respond to web requests and do not redirect. Having two "twin" domains that both resolve forces them to battle for SERP positions, making your SEO efforts less effective. We suggest redirecting one, then entering the other here."

I know about redirecting a PAGE using 301 Redirects and how to specify the www. canonical in Google webmaster tools, but is there a "DOMAIN" redirect that I'm missing.

What would you suggest doing given the error message above.

Thank you very much for the clear answer and the time it took you look at the site and write your post.

I will follow the instructions and see if things clear up.  I have this site set up on Campaign mode, so tomorrow it should get a full crawl and then we'll know if the Duplicate Page error goes away (which is the reason for this whole exercise).

No, I'm not waiting until Tuesday... didn't realize there was a weekly time-frame on the SEO Report Card Tool.

I have a site that shows duplicate page content for:

www.autoserviceexpertsonline   and   www.autoserviceexpertsonline/index.html

When looking at the files using the cms (intuit) file manager, I only see the /index.html version.

I added the Caononical tag referencing/pointing to both the domain name only and then changed to .../index.html

No matter how I code this, the seomoz On-Site SEO Grader still has a problem with it.

Is this a bug with the Grading program or am I doing something wrong?

Please help as I think this is causing me problems with Google and I'd like to get this right for future sites I will be working on.

If the old pages are NOINDEX, are the old inbound links still passed on to the new page via the 301's. and is the google juice passed?  I've wanted to do exactly what you suggest, but was afraid of severing the Linking credit from those old inbounds.
