We would like to see any tips or experience with filtering out spam reviews.

We operate a website where consumers can post their reviews on / experience with certain companies. We do receive a fair share of fake reviews (the "to good be true reviews" about certain companies and also sometimes negative review about their competitors).We filter these as good as we can.

For some companies, we receive a large number of reviews which individually seem to be ok (text-wise but also when checking IP addresses and e-mail addresses), but if you read all these reviews in sequence then there is something off, i.e. they seem to lack the linguistic variance that is normally present in consumer written reviews. We feel someone is trying to manipulate here but this someone is covering his tracks.

Do you have experience in this regard or can you provide us with additional data points to look at?

I think they are very usefull on top of the page. As you would probably link to the pages in the breadcrumbs in another way if you wouldn't have the breadcrumbs, it doesn't really matter for your linking structure. Haven't seen any evidence or experience that links in breadcrumbs are less valuable because they are in the breadcrumb.

As for additional placement at the bottom: I think it depends on the page. On a content page, actually quite some people scroll down reading and at the bottom they look for alternative resources. Why not add the breadcrumb also there along with other relevant links.

Hi Sean, never heard of that or experienced it. Here is a usefull interview by Eric Enge with Matt Cutts that really goes into the effects of a 301: http://www.stonetemple.com/articles/interview-matt-cutts-012510.shtml.

I guess what they mean is the situation that if you are on page A on your site and click on the link to page B, and a  redirect takes you to page C. Basically you could have gone from A to C directly. As the 301 dilutes a little bit of the page rank, it is by definition that sites utilising 301 internally this way lose a very little bit.

How do you visualize a website structure in terms of (categories of) pages and interlinking. I use such visuals for discussing what you are actually doing now and what can be improved. I have made visuals I few times myself (basically making boxes representing categories of pages and lines representing internal links), but I found that I soon ran into a scheme of huge proportions and needed more paper and more time. Appreciate your thoughts!

It is normally best explained as something similar to Google Pagerank which most people are familiar with. The fact that they both show just a number makes it very abstract and you cannot relate it to anything. You are just looking at some random numbers. I try to summarize it (PA is the strength of your entire domain expressed in a single number; PA is the strength of single page expressed in a single number).  It is very usefull for comparing websites strength.
