Can Search Engines Read "incorrect" urls?
I know that ideally a url should be something of the nature domain.com/topic, but if the url contains additional characters, for example, domain.com/topic?keyword, can the search engines still understand the complete words in the domain? Even though there are additional "incorrect" characters? Or do they stop "reading" once they find odd characters?
Thanks!

Is blocking RSS Feeds with robots.txt necessary?
Is it necessary to block an rss feed with robots.txt?
It seems they are automatically not indexed (http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2007/12/taking-feeds-out-of-our-web-search.html)
And, google says here that it's important not to block RSS feeds
(http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/10/using-rssatom-feeds-to-discover-new.html)
I'm just checking!

RE: SEO tips for RSS feeds?
Thanks for the quick reply. I am wondering if the url structure of the url for an rss feed matters? such as
/rss/[content type]
vs
feeds/domain/topic
vs any other url structure for the feed. My suspicion is it probably doesn't matter, but i just want to make sure.

Metrics to determine the quality of a link?
I found this very useful post on SEOMoz http://www.seomoz.org/blog/525600-metrics-how-do-you-measure-measure-a-link, but its a bit dated.
Also, it doesn't really help in terms of applying exact metrics to measure the quality of a link. Does anyone have any other suggestions to help automate / determine the quality of a link?

etc, etc.

RE: Canonical tag used on several pages?
Thank you for the quick reply. The noindex, follow, also passes link juice as well though, correct? To the pages it links to?

RE: Canonical tag used on several pages?
Regarding "link juice" between canonical and no-index--if all 100 pages are canonicalized to 1 url, that url will received "link juice" from all 100 pages, correct? And, if the noindex, follow tag is used, then the "link juice" will be distributed to all urls on each of the individual pages?

Canonical tag used on several pages?
Is it a bad idea to use rel=canonical from several pages back to one (if you are planning on no-indexing them)? Does this concentrate the “link juice” from those several pages back to one?

Is there a tool to help you calculate the bolded statement? Thanks!

Tool to calculate the number of pages in Google's index?
When working with a very large site, are there any tools that will help you calculate the number of links in the Google index? But what if you want to see the number of pages indexed for 100 different subdirectories (i.e. www.domain.com/a, www.domain.com/b)? is there a tool to help automate the process of finding the number of pages from each subdirectory in Google's index?

Robots.txt & url removal vs. noindex, follow?
When de-indexing pages from google, what are the pros & cons of each of the below two options:
-
robots.txt & requesting url removal from google webmasters
- Use the noindex, follow meta tag on all doctor profile pages
- Keep the URLs in the Sitemap file so that Google will recrawl them and find the noindex meta tag
- make sure that they're not disallowed by the robots.txt file

RE: Moving poor content to its own domain may risk being seen as a doorway page?
My logic is that the content isn't that bad, and has potential for improvement. It currently drives 30% of organic traffic to the site and accounts for 75% of the total urls. At the moment, we just want to get out from under the Panda penalty, and work on improving the content in the future. Moving it to its own url seems like the best option until can improve it later.
-
Moving poor content to its own domain may risk being seen as a doorway page?
We have decided to move some thin content from our primary domain to an independent domain in order to lift the panda penalty. Does anyone have suggestions for how to avoid being seen as a doorway page? Thank you in advance.

RE: Does poor quality on a subdomain affect a domain (with regards to Panda)?
Also, does it depend on how the subdomain is treated? I know in some cases Google will treat the subdomain as a separate domain, depending on interlinking.

RE: Does poor quality on a subdomain affect a domain (with regards to Panda)?
Good suggestion, but unfortunately the content cannot be consolidated or changed (it is a directory of information). So, you do have personal experience with clients that shows that poor quality on a subdomain will affect the primary domain? Thank you!
-
RE: Does poor quality on a subdomain affect a domain (with regards to Panda)?
Thank you. Can you elaborate on "entirely separately"? Exactly how separate are subdomains? Would no-indexing the content be a solution?
-
RE: Does poor quality on a subdomain affect a domain (with regards to Panda)?
Thank you for your quick response. The "thin" content constitutes about 35% of the current traffic, and has potential for improvement in the future, so we prefer not to permanently eliminate it. We are searching for an immediate solution to show Google that content on the primary domain has improved. Do you have any external sources (google quotes) to show that poor content on a subdomain affects the primary domain as well? Thank you.
-
RE: When to delete low quality content
Thank you for the reply. I should add that this 75% of the content is an application (i.e. it is all the same). So the traffic is about the same on all of the pages. We need to choose between 404-ing the content or putting it on a subdomain. Do you know if having thin content on a subdomain will affect the original domain? I've been searching for a while, but can't seem to find anything concrete about this. Thanks!
-
Does poor quality on a subdomain affect a domain (with regards to Panda)?
We are considering moving some thin content from our site to a subdomain as a potential "panda" fix. But, we are unsure if Google will treat the subdomain as a completely separate domain or not. Does anyone have any data / Google info that might answer this question? Thanks in advance for your help!

RSS links vs. contextual links
Which has more value? Passes more "link juice"? Auto generated rss links or contextual links?
-
When to delete low quality content
If 75% of a site is poor quality, but still accounts for 35% of the traffic to the site, should the content be 404ed? Or, would it be better to move it to a subdomain and set up 301 re-directs? This site was greatly affected by Panda.
