Are Directories Still of Any Value?
I know directories are an out-dated way to gain backlinks but the more I look into competitors that rank high link porfolio - many of thier top links come from paid directories. Granted, these can be old links but they still maintain highest authority, etc.
Do you guys find directories still valuable as a linking building strategy?

What is your strategy in looking for content to write relative to your niche?
looking to keep adding to our blog in a big way. Things I use are questions we get a lot, we add them to blog and answer them - works quite nicely. Look at other blogs although in our industry its not really there, etc.
What are some of your strategies for looking for content to write about?

SEO Migration / Transition from Current Platform. Have Experience?
We're currently about to make the switch from one commerce platform to another (volusion to magento,) and wondering if anyone here, at all, has any experience with having a site for a few years and then switching platforms.
How did the engines react? What did you do? Time frame for things that happened, etc...would love some feedback and input on your story if you've migrated platforms.
Thanks

RE: Penalized for "Unnatural Links" on Webmaster Tools
Thanks Robert. Yes, I believe we have a good link profile and work hard at it. This is really a shame. I don't see any reason to really waste more time and not submit a rec request to Google in the next few hours.
I will keep everyone posted and thanks for contributing.

RE: Reconsideration Request
Have you logged in to your Google Webmaster tools and checked for any warnings from Google. Usually, you can see if there is a penalty on the site there...Otherwise, it can be a multiple of issues. What is your domain?

RE: Penalized for "Unnatural Links" on Webmaster Tools
Hi Brian,
Thanks for your input. The fact of the matter is that THAT is standard practice with all shopping cart software companies. You can look through millions of websites and at the bottom you'll see Powered by or Ecommerce by...etc.
Design firms do this, etc. I don't believe that's the issue but that's something we may need to ask in our reconsideration request.

RE: Penalized for "Unnatural Links" on Webmaster Tools
this is for www.fortune3.com
we're a shopping cart software company so our link building comes from:
-Customer Websites
-Directories (Business.com and other authoritative directories)
-Blogs (our own mostly.)
-Press Releases
I did find www.aolstalker.com linking. ....what do you think?

Penalized for "Unnatural Links" on Webmaster Tools
Has anyone ever logged in to Google Webmaster tools and seen a message about them seeing unnatural links (as a warning)
Our homepage lost all its rankings. I will submit a reconsideration request. We don't engage in link buying practices (some directories, thats all.)
Any feedback, please?
Thanks

RE: Played Out ? about BLOG COMMENTING LINKS
Thanks for responding (Richard and Ryan). Question still remains regarding if blog commenting is time worth spending as a link building strategy.
We can all argue about if adds value, bring traffic, etc. I guess what I am asking is if you've used this as a link building strategy and if you've seen it being effective for SEO purposes.

Played Out ? about BLOG COMMENTING LINKS
Want to get some thoughts if some of you still see significant (or have ever) results from blog comment links. Heard them all about why it's worth it, people see you, click, etc etc etc...
Want anyone to share experience with this type of link building and if you guys think its worth it and has seo value.

SEO Correlation Between Code and Search Engine Rankings
I posted this on my blog and wanted to get everyones opinion on this (http://palatnikfactor.com/2011/06/07/seo-correlation-between-code-and-search-engine-rankings/)
I’m always looking to see what top ranking websites may be doing to get the rankings they do. One of the tasks of any SEO I guess is to really analyze competitors, right?
I want to really stress that what I am writing here is completely opinion based and have not (due to time) validated this correlation enough but would like to get the discussion started. Nevertheless, I did enough research to see that there may be a correlation between code validation and top ranking websites, at least for certain queries where the number of real big players/brands is limited or non-existent.
So, what do I mean? http://validator.w3.org/ validates code on websites. This tool shows you errors and warnings that may be making it harder for search engines to crawl your website. Looking at top competitors for certain niches, I was surprised to find that top sites had very few errors compared to 2+ page rankings. That’s not to say that all the sites on the first page had fewer errors (cleaner code) than websites in the 2nd page plus. However, again, top ranking websites for keywords that I was looking at had cleaner code which may have a correlation in regards to organic rankings.
What’s your take? Does this have any effect in regards to SEO?

RE: Competitors and Directory Links
Good response guys, thanks
@ Dave: What research do you use to look into the directories? It seems most of these directories where you may submit one too may submit to many others. I've always stayed away from directories to make the link portfolio as organic as possible but coming across an incredible amount of backlink porfolios with directory links.
@Becampaz: Yes, I see blog comments do serve well in some of these backlink ports.

Competitors and Directory Links
Hi guys, wanted to get some input and thoughts here. I'm analyzing many competitor links for a specific client (even other clients actually as well) and come across a pretty heavy directory backlink profiles.
has anyone here had success with directory listings? Seem many of the competitors backlinks are coming from directories.
What say you?
