Things that have worked for us is basically focusing on basics -
Write lots of topical content
Think about the core user and write content to capture their entire decision making journey
In depth, well researched content that will be used as a reference for others. Its fairly slow from link perspective but you get really high value links over time.
Interlink content really well - keep it topical and meaningful.
After few months, category pages will start to rank.
