RE: Old URLs Appearing in SERPs
Oh gosh - it's my pleasure! Thanks for being part of the Moz community I'm honored to help out.
As for the URLs - looks like everything's fine. Google often maintains old URLs in a searchable index form long after they've been 301'd, but for every query I tried, they're clearly pulling up the correct/new version of the page, so those redirects seem to be working just great. You're simply seeing the vestigal remnants of them still in Google (which isn't unusual - we had URLs from seomoz.org findable via site: queries for many months after moving to Moz, but the right, new pages were all ranking for normal queries and traffic wasn't being hurt).
Some examples:
- https://www.google.com/search?q=Eichler+History+flashbacks
- https://www.google.com/search?q=eichler+resources+on+the+web+books
Unless you're also seeing a loss in search traffic/rankings, I wouldn't sweat it much. They'll disappear eventually from the site: query, too. It just takes a while.

RE: Why should your title and H1 tag be different?
Just want to point out that personally, I disagree with that assessment and haven't seen anything data-wise to suggest it's an issue. It's hard to believe that Google/Bing would want to penalize so many millions of sites that do this by default (news sites, Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, etc. all have it in default settings either in base or plugins).
That said, Todd usually has good reasons for his recommendations, so would be interesting to probe more deeply.

RE: Has the keyword planner search volume metric gone crazy?
The numbers you received in your second screenshot are the same ones I'm getting, and they're pretty similar to what I see in Moz's Keyword Explorer (which bolsters AdWords data with clickstream serach data). I don't know that AdWords is going crazy though - the first screenshot you showed had keywords in the 4-600 range that now show ~1,000 searches? That's not a massive swing, and we know Google uses buckets, even though they show numbers (as Russ Jones pointed out here: https://moz.com/blog/google-keyword-planner-dirty-secrets).
It wouldn't surprise me if these keywords are just on the edge of the buckets Google's defined, and thus swing between one volume number and another.

RE: Bye Bye Keyword Difficulty Tool :(
Yes! We've had this ability since day one Just click "create or upload a new list" and you can create a list of hundreds or even thousands of keywords for analysis and comparison all at once.

RE: Bye Bye Keyword Difficulty Tool :(
Thanks Greg - I hear you on the comparison graphic side. I'll see what we can do about upgrading the UI/UX of that longer term.

RE: Rank Tracker not Working.
Well, here's the complex thing - every time we share anything about the DDoS - on Twitter for example, or in the press (including when that NYTimes article was published), the DDoS crew hits us again. This weekend was insanely hard. Our tech ops team are staying up 30 hours in a row, missing meals, missing their families. It's pretty horrifying, and it's been going on for months.
It was only the first time they wanted a few hundred, then they emailed for thousands, now they don't even email anymore - they're clearly just out for revenge because we've been helping other companies to stop them using what we've learned.
My bias was to want to share that stuff, too. Unfortunately, if we do, not only do we risk more attacks, but we risk the attackers finding new vulnerabilities based on what we say we've done. It's an all around very sucky situation, and one of those times when we simply can't be as transparent as we'd like.

RE: Do Page Views Matter? (ranking factor?)
Well said - engagement > page views. Google's smart enough to understand that on more complex sites and with more complex technology/JS/etc, those aren't always perfect corollaries for one another.

RE: Rank Tracker not Working.
FYI - Rank Tracker appears to be back up and working for me. Not sure if we have the "all clear" from engineering, but you might want to give it another spin. I was able to successfully get the right rankings back on my queries just now.

RE: "sex" in non-adult domain name
I wouldn't worry about it at all. The engines are definitely advanced enough at this point to perceive "Electronics Expo" and separate that from "Electronic Sex Po." If you love the name and think it's brandable, go for it.

RE: Keyword Explorer is Now Live; Ask Me Anything About It!
Hi Stuart - in the search bar, on the right-hand side, there's a drop down to change the search engine. Unfortunately, volume data is for US only right now, but we're looking into expanding that over time.
-
RE: Keyword Explorer is Now Live; Ask Me Anything About It!
Yes! If you've got a high-level Moz Pro account, you'll get 15,000 queries per month. Go nuts!
-
RE: Keyword Explorer is Now Live; Ask Me Anything About It!
Yeah - some important things to keep in mind about volume in KWE:
-
It uses United States volume only right now (if you search by default in AdWords, you may be getting global search volume unless you choose "US")
-
It's modifying that data with actual clickstream numbers to give greater accuracy
-
It normalizes trend volume, so if Google has a big spike or dip, they'll show that one number, whereas KWE tries to estimate the monthly average data.

RE: Did Google's Farmer Update Positively/Negatively Affect Your Search Traffic?
Teachstreet doesn't fit the profile of a lot of other sites that got hit. Were some pages affected and others not? If you could show off a dozen or so of affected vs. not, that could really help sort out the issue (and possibly give us a roadmap to help).
That sucks Dave! Teachstreet has been getting so good lately, too.

RE: Moz's official stance on Subdomain vs Subfolder - does it need updating?
Hi Nima - that seems like a big swing for a move. I might double-check that all the redirects are correct and that engines are indexing the new pages properly. Google Webmaster Tools may be helpful there, too.
As far as timeframes for seeing traffic dip and recover, yes, we have observed that - it ranges from 1-4 months. You can see more about that here: https://moz.com/blog/rebrand-or-redirect-my-site-consolidate-multiple-sites-whiteboard-friday and in the comments.
Wish you all the best!

RE: Moz's official stance on Subdomain vs Subfolder - does it need updating?
Hi Shop-Sq,
A) I think merging the domains is almost definitely the right move, so long as you do it right (get the redirects nailed, don't have any performance issues, update the links correctly, etc).
B) I don't believe there's any penalty coming for shopping sites that also happen to host forum content or blog content. The only risk is if a lot of the site becomes (or is) cruft, meaning low-engagement/low-value content Google doesn't want in its index or searchers never click on/stay on.
C) We have not seen what your developers describe. Some forums haven't done well, others have done quite well (e.g. Moz's Q+A has benefited a lot over the last few years). I don't believe any hiccups you encounter will be because the types of content are unique, but rather because of technical issues, missteps, or content that doesn't help searchers and doesn't perform in Google (and all three should be avoidable).
D) Yes. We/I still recommend subfolders over subdomains. More strongly than ever actually. We've got some new evidence that Google judges content on a subfolder level, hence subdomains may not inherit all the rankings abilities of subfolders/other subdomains on the same domain.

RE: Keyword Explorer is Now Live; Ask Me Anything About It!
Hi Charles-Olivier,
Thanks so much! We're very excited to get this first version launched. Re: French - the database won't be nearly as comprehensive for suggestions as it is in English. That's not to say it's useless, but the tool is certainly English-language-centric at this first launch. In the future, we hope to add support for other languages and regions, too.
p.s. Québec is one of my favorite cities in the world; if there's ever a great marketing conference there, tell them to invite me! Would love to visit again.
