I will try that technique.  We use something similar for the title but in the Angular app.js file, however have struggled to do the same for the description, canonical tags etc.

Actually right now we add the tags we need in Javascript, using the DOM and prerender and google seems to like it.  We can;t run a crawl any longer in the std Moz package for some reason we can only do one per week now.  Moz doesn't seem to cope too well with the Javascript though.  When we tried other tools it seemed to c heck out fine.

I'm not sure if it is Moz crawlers that are causing us the issue here, anyway!

We're also still using Angular 1.6 so we really need to upgrade to v4 or at least 2.

We're also launching a new MEAN SPA, We've gotten our site looking quite good for SEO now, other than the meta description and canonical tags.

However I believe the MOZ crawler still doesn't understand javascript, we use AngularJS or JQEURY to change and add the meat tags for each page, which I am confident is OK with Google but MOZ and SEMRush don't like it.

That could be something to do with the lower score on Moz?

Do you mind me asking how do you set your page meta descriptions and canonical tags?

Hi Guys, OK so we resolved this and it's a Microsoft issue!!  and a schoolboy mistake from me!

We use "Web User Controls" on the website that allow us to write re-usable modules for things like headers, burger menus and footers in an ASP.NET web solution.  We then drag and drop the onto any page and if we need to change them then we just change the core web user control HTML.

The rogue links were coming from these web user controls, when they were on pages in the rogue directories.

Now the reason we had this fault on this website on not on any other was because we made the mistake of using standard HTML

Well if the page is in the root directory then no problem.  If you want to go to the home.aspx page then the link is fine (HOME

However if you put this footer on  page in a sub folder then you need to change the link to ../home.aspx, but you can;t do that or all the pages in the root folder go squeewy.  So this is why you use an ASP:Hyperlink control instead, this allows you to define a page from root with the ~/home.aspx link.

This is where all of these rogue pages were coming form.

TY for the help, however the website is a raw and simple IIS one.  I have root access to the server and we manually upload and update all the sites we run, nothing fancy.  There's no CMS, just good old .aspx pages, images and a few folders.  The website is pretty static.

So here's some info from 1 entry in the CSV file of the report: (Replaced domain just to keep it private)

Redirect URL: /Error404.aspx?aspxerrorpath=/casestudies/home.aspx

I have double checked there are no accidental pages at these locations.

I have been setting up some rewrite/redirect rules, but these are allthe noemal trainling slah, www to root, removal of .aspx and some specific page redirects fro the old site but thats it.

I guess I need to know where the heck these could be coming from?

Another obvious question to some I hope.

I ran my first report using the Moz crawler and I have a bunch of pages with temporary redirects as a medium level issue showing up. Trouble is the pages don't exist so they are being redirected to my custom 404 page.

So for example I have a URL in the report being called up from lord only knows where!:

www.domain.com/pdf/home.aspx

This doesn't exist, I have only 1 home.aspx page and it's in the root directory! but it is giving a temp redirect to my 404 page as I would expect but that then leads to a MOZ error as outlined.  So basically you could randomize any url up and it would give this error so I am trying to work out how I deal with it before Google starts to notice or before a competitor starts to throw all kinds at my site generating these errors.

Any steering on this would be much appreciated!

The trouble is that we have a lot of mission critical services running on this server, add to that we have limited PHP, mySQL etc skills as we're Microsoft bods here.  Installing all of this onto our server is not really an option, more a recipe for complete disaster!

One idea we had was creating some kind of folder in IIS on the main server www.domain.com that then redirected/re-wrote to blog.domain.com.  THe principle is that same as people visiting friendly URLs that actually map to .aspx pages but on a domain level, not page level.  My head's exploded a bit so i'm not sure if that would work at all with correct link juice being passed.

This must be a common scenario but there's very little help on it.  Right now I have:

www.domain.com hosted on a Windows dedicated server.

I have blog.domain.com hosted on a separate hosted Wordpress server and I use an A Record at the DNS level to make sure the sub domain works.  Easy peasy!

However we want to move our blog so its at www.domain.com/blog as we're definitely seeing an issue with the sub domain hosting of the blog in terms of SEO.

My problem is that I cannot install WP onto the windows server, its' just not feasible as too much is going on with it, so i can;t simply redirect my blog.subdomain.com to www.domain.com/blog as it won't exist.

How do I do this and maintain the SEO/link juice?

OK, so I get that.  Maybe a case of reading in to this more than I need to, just get on and pick the keywords and see how it goes with some in reserve to tweak, swap and test with.

So lots of pages all designed to land 1 or 2 keywords on is now bad.

But am I right in saying that the converse is now true so that if you have 2 pages with different content on it but it turns out they are optomised for the same meaning keywords (although different ones specifically) then you could in fact be doing the wrong thing?  What I mean by that is that you could be seen as having 2 pages that are effectively delivering the same content as perceived by the search engines.

I guess for people who have always been used to making good content, this is actually better as you can just focus on the content rather than having to split that out for each page/KW combination.

It has been a little while since I was involved with KW's in earnest.  1.5 years ago and beyond I did really well with SEO.  I'm not in a hugely competitive market but we found our keywords, we wrote great web pages for 1,2,3 keywords and when we found more great keywords that we built a new page to rank for.  For example:

One big hitting keyword was "Rugged PDA", we created a category page for Rugged PDA's.  Another was "Rugged Handheld" so we had a new page for that.  We then long tailed "semi rugged PDA", "waterproof rugged PDA" etc etc and built sub category pages.  We were legit, did lots of content marketing, ran a blog tweeted etc and we did really well to be honest.

However these days it's not working, One of Rand's whiteboard sessions stated that you need to build bigger topic based pages that delivered on more keywords (The one about shoes!).

This is great as we love that idea as we can have 1 big category page that offers great value to the visitor, however I am struggling to work out how we target a bigger list of keywords to the one page or to fewer pages.  To underline this the MOZ page rankers also still seem to work in the same way where they expect 1 or 2 KW's per page to get A ranks to them, so I'm confused!!

For example Rugged PDA is an old term, Google trends is showing that it's glory days are over and we know that the term "Rugged Smartphone" is the one to use as we all use smartphones not PDAs these days.  However we also see a lot about Rugged + Phone, Mobile, Cell, Handheld, tablet, device, phablet... all relevant to one big category page.

So I run these KW's through google search to see if the same pages come up as a test to see if Google thinks they all mean the same, I get a few, but not much overlap.  How do we therefore have 1 page that talks about all kinds of great stuff about the "Rugged smartphone" but one that also targets rugged handheld, rugged android device etc etc?

I've spent 2 days catching up, i'm none the wiser on this specific element but i'm sure I am just missing one key element of common sense here and any help is very much appreciated.

I just re-read the above and thought I could actually summarise this far better, with the help of a response from another question I have open!

Does anchor text on internally linking pages matter at all or is it OK and an issue that only matters with external links now?

TY Chris so I would say we have way way more internal links than external and I absolutely appreciate the DA comment.  We know we have to get more links from high DA sites but also in a natural way.  We aren't afraid of content at all and give a lot out, we just did it all in 1 place on a sub domain!

So Are you saying that the anchor text from blog.domain.com pointing to www.domain.com is not really at the top of the list but probably worth dealing with. Or are you saying that it's probably not worth combing through the blog to correct?

We have a mature website and a mature blog with over 500 genuine blogs written on it over 4 years.  In terms of actual "people" value it has to be high. We used to get 1000 visitors per day, we now get 300. We still have 850 subscribers so its of a certain size.

However we have been hit by the Penguin/Panda updates and our DA has dropped to what everyone is telling us is too low for a site like this and we still have a google backlink problem, unyet we only have 190 external links that we think are all OK now.

The problem we have is that we seem to have too many links from the blog to the main website with the same anchor text.  This has occurred with a blogroll style link to the home page which appears on every post/page of the blog, also I think we have too many anchor same anchor text links to product pages (Motorola ES400) and category pages (Tablet PC).

We're going through changing these now so that we have the right mix but the specific questions I wanted to ask were:

1. Will loads of links with the same anchor text affect us if the blog is counted as internal links.  Its on the same "blog" sub-domain as the main website.

2. Will this affect the DA of both sites?

3. Is Wordpress capable of damaging us with all the extra pages it creates automatically.

We've done nothing but genuine content posting here and i'm sure we can get it back but it kind of really demotivates you when 2/3rds of your traffic goes overnight. Many thanks for any help.

I really need some help here, the problem I have must be one that many have.  I have a simple e-commerce style website so 1 product page can in fact get 40-50 internal links to it.  These links come from a mixture of:

1. The parent category pages that the product sits on (Rugged PDA) and in turn the 10 filter pages of this category page (Rugged PDA, ordered by battery size).

2. Alternative product list on other product pages,  So many products link to each other as alternatives. From Google analytics we can see that visitors like to browse product to product seeing 5 alternatives on each page with titles like "Smaller", "more rugged" etc.

3. Manufactuer pages, so we have a link to each product from each manufacturer home page where we talk lots about each manufacture we resell.

We also have links from images used in the website.

So its a nice usable website but we're finding that Google is still telling us in Webmaster tools that it thinks some links are dubious and we're trying to find out why.  We only now have 190 external links to the website, most are internal and from the website or our blog on a subdomain.

The problem we think is that we generate the category and products pages all dynamically so the anchor text is looking the same.  Will this potentially create issues for us?
