It should be OK if you have a single product on your homepage. You just need to follow these guidelines:

The following guidelines apply to review snippets:

• When using review markup, the main topic of the page needs to be about a specific product or service. For example, using review markup on a page containing multiple products is not supported.
• Review of adult-related products or services are not supported.
• If the markup contains a single review, the reviewer’s name needs to be a valid name (Person or Organization). For example, “50% off until Saturday” is not a valid name for a reviewer.

I'm not confident Google will display the stars, but I think for the cost it is well worth having a go.

Our solution for this is to use http authentication. So our dev sites require a simple password to access.

250 redirects is a modest number. I have sites with 1000's that have no problems.

To answer your question, if you use appropriate 301 redirects this should not affect your PA.

However you should not need to do this to facilitate your analytics. Why won't it work with an extension?

This is bad for user experience and SEO. I would avoid the canonical tag solution and opt for cononicalisation via 301 redirects / rewrite rules.

It looks like Google is not sending Google New universal results through a redirect tracking script, so you can tell them apart.

For a Universal search result the referrer will begin with:

google.com/search

For an Organic result it will be:

google.com/url

And for Google news it will be:

news.google.com

Set up filters to apply a custom variable to each and you can segment easily. (Don't forget to cater for all the alternative Google domains)
