I have my new site and tracking live online. However, I can't find in analytics where this would report to! Perhaps it's not reporting properly...

I removed the Norton seal code and now it's displaying properly!!!
Any idea why the Verisign code would break it?

When I remove Google's re-marketing script, it only displays code from Norton

RE: HELP! IE secure page display issue on new live site
Thanks for the response Khem!
I added the meta code, but it didn't make a difference.
I may have found another piece of the puzzle. When I do a view source in IE, I get the following:
<iframe name="google_conversion_frame" title="Google conversion frame" width="300" height="13" src="https://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/viewthroughconversion/1071593243/?random=1400791999038&cv=7&fst=1400791999038&num=1&fmt=1&label=oqsnCI6N-QYQm-78_gM&guid=ON&u_h=1080&u_w=1920&u_ah=1080&u_aw=1920&u_cd=24&u_his=62&u_tz=-240&u_java=true&u_nplug=0&u_nmime=0&frm=0&url=https%3A//www.jwsuretybonds.com/protools.htm" frameborder="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" vspace="0" hspace="0" allowtransparency="true" scrolling="no"><img height="1" width="1" border="0" alt="" src="https://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/viewthroughconversion/1071593243/?frame=0&random=1400791999038&cv=7&fst=1400791999038&num=1&fmt=1&label=oqsnCI6N-QYQm-78_gM&guid=ON&u_h=1080&u_w=1920&u_ah=1080&u_aw=1920&u_cd=24&u_his=62&u_tz=-240&u_java=true&u_nplug=0&u_nmime=0&frm=0&url=https%3A//www.jwsuretybonds.com/protools.htm" /></iframe>

HELP! IE secure page display issue on new live site
For some reason IE 7, 8, & 9 do not display the following page: https://www.jwsuretybonds.com/protools.htm
All they show is the Norton seal. It shows properly in all other browsers without issue (including IE 10+), but the earlier versions flash the page for a split second, then hides everything.
Can someone shed some light on this? This is a new live site we just launched minutes ago and these browsers account for 12% of our overall traffic.
UGH I hate you microsoft!!!
Thanks all

RE: Help w/ Google Event tracking w/ new Universal analytics.js
I created successfully created a new conversion goal in Adwords and created my dynamic value per https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/1722054?hl=en
I can't find any official documentation on linking the conversions in Analytics and Adwords. All I found was this 2009 article that is possibly no longer relevant. http://www.seroundtable.com/archives/019997.html
Any guidance on linking the two is very appreciated

RE: Help w/ Google Event tracking w/ new Universal analytics.js
Hah! Yep...I just figured I shouldn't post it publicly.
Is it ok that I am reporting dynamic values for the events? These aren't completed sales (or I'd use eCommerce tracking), but have the potential to turn into one.
Will these show up in adwords as well for our PPC manager?
Thanks again all

RE: Help w/ Google Event tracking w/ new Universal analytics.js
Wow! A lot of quick responses. Thank you everyone This is the last item before we launch our new design, so I'm excited to get it done.
Ok, so I modified the everything to be a bit more appropriate for my site for further clarity and listed it within the new analytics.js code. If the estimate is completed I would display the code below. Is this correct?

Help w/ Google Event tracking w/ new Universal analytics.js
I want to implement Google event tracking after my visitors complete an estimate form. The form provides them an approximate range of costs based on their widget and widget amount.
I have the php coding done, but I don't know JS and I need to send an event upon completion of the estimate form. However, all of Google's examples are button click events. How do I send the event upon completing a form if there is no separate landing page?
If I have my Google analytics code on the page as well, would simply adding the following the completed estimate code work?

RE: How to measure engagement in 2014?
No worries on the delay. It gave me time to research it all more
I believe the issue is related to slow load times on low bandwidth connections & too much processing time on older computers. This made it so people with faster machines and better ISPs liked my site while slower connection and older machine visitors hated it....that's my guess anyhow.
I'm redoing the site in bootstrap and have greatly reduced load and processing time.
I'll share the results when I have them.

RE: Lost rankings after disavowing links
Vince/Tom/Michael,
Any updates?
I just did a second round of disavowing and am seeing a substantial drop.
-
RE: How to measure engagement in 2014?
Thanks Cyrus.
What do you do when you see conflicting data on metrics?
For example...
-
Higher bounce rate, higher average time on site, increased page views
-
Lower bounce rate, higher avg time on site, decreased page views
I suppose there is no rule of thumb, but I hate not having a clear path. Any thoughts?

RE: How to measure engagement in 2014?
Thanks Egol. I've appreciated your advice going years back to the SEOChat forums!
I'm a bit disappointed that you appear to be playing in the dark as much I am. I can usually make arguments/guesses for various scenarios when looking at bounce rate and avg time on site. However, I never walk away feeling confident in whether the changes are actually an improvement.

RE: How to measure engagement in 2014?
This is interesting, as I like the idea of surveys without bother my visitors...
Do you have some advice on what the "right" questions are in your experience?
-
RE: How to measure engagement in 2014?
My guess is that Google doesn't use time on site as an important metric. Is a site that answers my search query in 15 secs less valuable than one that takes 2 mins? If user satisfaction is key, I think searchers are happier with getting the answer quickly. Google has data that we don't...specifically, whether or not your site answered the search query, whether they clicked on another site after yours, or if they did a new related search. I believe that this is more important to user satisfaction for Google and our rankings.
I know our data is limited, but I'm just not sure how to make heads or tails of my engagement on a lot of my pages.
Using your example, what if bounce rate increases, but time on site does as well?
...what if bounce rate drops, but time on site does as well?
-
How to measure engagement in 2014?
Cyris's article on Google making user satisfaction #1 is great! See: http://moz.com/blog/seo-satisfaction
However, what is the best practice to measure user satisfaction? We have no data as to when the user goes back to the SERPS to click a competitor or do another search! Are the metrics of bounce rate and avg time on site actually helpful or just confusing the situation? Did my visitor find what they need quickly or leave because my site sucks?
I'd like to hear how others are measuring user satisfaction in 2014...

RE: Q&A DB Script For Client Questions
Perfect! That's precisely what I was looking for. I wasn't aware that Disqus worked outside of the WP plugin.
I'll give it a shot. Thanks!
-
RE: Q&A DB Script For Client Questions
I agree, it should be simple. That's why I was hoping for a simple php (or whatever language) to plug-in and be done with it.
My marketing budget is just about exhausted for the year and this isn't high enough of a priority to hire a programmer for.
Thanks for the input though!
-
RE: Q&A DB Script For Client Questions
I've used vBulletin in the past, but I think that is way overkill for what I am looking to do. I just want people to be able to post a question, more similar to WordPress comments.
-
Q&A DB Script For Client Questions
Our clients usually have a lot of questions about our industry. We implemented Facebook comments (see bottom of: http://www.jwsuretybonds.com/info/faq.htm) on many pages throughout the site to allow our clients to ask whatever they'd like and build additional content using copy on how our clients speak, not industry expert vocab...
I have some problems with FB comments:
- Our answers only show to people logged into FB. For others it looks as if we don't reply.
- The data pulls from FB, so we don't own it and it is slower than our server.
- You need a Facebook, Yahoo, or Hotmail account...I want anyone to be able to ask a question.
Can anyone recommend a script that accomplishes our Q&A functionality using our own database? Also, I'd like to allow anyone to post without a requirement of an account.
If I had a WordPress site, I suppose this would be easier, as I'm sure there are various comment solutions, but I have a HTML\PHP based custom built site.

RE: Frequency of Manual Link Building Monitoring
Thanks for the response. Do you feel checking new links discovered weekly is a bit overkill?
-
Frequency of Manual Link Building Monitoring
Hey Moz!
We're in the middle of performing a link remediation campaign, and had a question regarding new links. We do not acquire any links through methods that break Google's guidelines, but we recently discovered a suspicious link to our website that happened organically.
What is the recommended frequency for manually checking all newly discovered links to our website in order to catch/remove toxic links? Monthly? Bi-monthly? Yearly?
Thanks in advance!

RE: Any recommended stock photo websites?
Thanks for the responses everyone. I'm going to look into all of your suggestions.

Any recommended stock photo websites?
Hello there,
I'm looking for a stock photo website for our company blog posts. We used iStockphoto in the past, but they raised their prices and it just isn't worth the price.
Does anyone have suggestions for a good stock photo site that is less expensive?

RE: 301 redirect w/ dynamic pages to static
Thank you Devanur. I will make use of this if a 301 redirect solution can not be found.

301 redirect w/ dynamic pages to static
I am trying to redirect old dynamically created pages to a new static one (single page). However, when I implement the redirects, it still uses part of the old dynamic url. For instance...
dynamic.php?var=example1
dynamic.php?var=example2
dynamic.php?var=example3
should all redirect to: static.html. However, they are redirecting to:
static.html?var=example1
static.html?var=example2
static.html?var=example3
The page is resolving fine, but I don't want google to misinterpret the new static page as numerous page with dup content.
I tried this in PHP on the dynamic.php page as follows, but it the problem above persisted:
header('HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently');
header('Location: http://www.mysite.com/static.html');I tried doing it in my .htaccess file as follows, but the problem persisted:
redirect 301 /info/tool_stimulus.php?var=example1 http://www.mysite.com/static.html
redirect 301 /dynamic.php?var=example2 http://www.mysite.com/static.htmlCan anyone solve this in PHP or w/ htaccess?
Help!!!

RE: Internal Link Analysis Tool
Wow this is great! I didn't know about it. Thank you so much!!!
-
Internal Link Analysis Tool
I want to get a better handle on what internal link text (and co-occurance if possible) my site currently has. We have a lot of old blog articles that provide link juice back to the main site, but with thousands of pages, we never kept track of when we internally link to a page.
Are there any tools that will provide an analysis of this? OpenSiteExplorer seems like a very tedious way to do it and it didn't appear to be 100% accurate.
Also, are there any tools that will provide analysis and recommendations based on keywords targeted?

RE: Having Content be the First thing the bots see
It is done using CSS, but it needs to be clarified if the content is down far due to other content on the page or if it is down low due to HTML tags (perhaps from a navigation). The former might make a difference, but I think G can detect that trick anyway. The latter is irrelevant in my opinion, as the tags will be discounted.
-
RE: Having Content be the First thing the bots see
This can be done via CSS, but I'm not sure doing so has value any more. It used to be a practice a couple of years back, but I don't think it is necessary anymore.

RE: Storing & Analyzing Site Search Phrases
Precisely what I was hoping for! I did some searching myself and didn't realize GA would tie in with the site search. Fantastic! Thanks so much.
-
Storing & Analyzing Site Search Phrases
We are adding a JQuery smart search to our site that provides product suggestions as our visitors type.
I can create a simple script to store precisely what the visitors are searching for and how they type it. However...
- I am not sure how to best analyze the data for use. Simply storing the data does not tell me how many times a particular phrase was used.
- I believe a smart suggestion search tool will skew my results, as it will suggest what I list my product names as in my database rather than what they call it.
I don't want to reinvent the wheel. I found a great JQuery script for the suggestion search, but is there anything out there for storing and analyzing the user search input?

Embed Same Video On Multiple Pages or 301 Redirect Into 1?
I have 3 pages that rank VERY well for related terms such as:
-How to get widgets
-How to become a widget
-Getting widgets
-etc.
I am incorporating a video on the topic and rewriting much of the content on the site. I am wondering if it is wise to 301 redirect all 3 pages to 1 page that has the new/better video content or if I should leave the old content that is ranking well and embed the video on the top of each.
The anal retentive side of me wants a nice new site structure and 1 powerful page.
However, if the 3 pages are currently ranking (sometimes 2 pages in the same top 10 results), should I mess with what is working?
Ultimately my goal is to increase the avg time on site as these 3 pages are top traffic pages for the site. However, they do not convert at all, as they are for a product we don't offer.
Thoughts?

RE: Wistia Transcript AND Our Own?
Thanks Ben! I just started with Wistia, but I am blown away...and that is after I had high expectations from SEOMoz and the likes.
What happens if I edit the transcript? Will it still highlight properly if I do a word for word swap?
-
Wistia Transcript AND Our Own?
Wistia has a feature that allows you to have them create a transcript for your video that highlights the words as the video progress, kind of like Karaoke.
I am just playing with implementing this feature, but am not sure whether Google can index the transcript within the Wistia player (see code in link below). Currently I have the Wistia transcript for auto-highlighting functionality AND my manually typed static transcript at the bottom of the page.
Should I incorporate both or will Google see the Wistia transcript?

RE: Video Creation Ideas On A Budget
Thanks for the in depth response. We just had a marketing meeting last Friday where we used your slide presentation on this topic as a reference.
I think the best thing my friends can do is just put themselves out there and film the videos themselves. They have the technical know-how, they just need to get over being camera shy.
-
Video Creation Ideas On A Budget
I am trying to help a friend add quality content to their site. It's been determined that video is a great medium for much of it. However, their budget and time is limited. Here are some ideas I've had so far and comments on each.
Outsource to a budget production company
Pros: $500/min or less (I hope), time saving
Cons: Quality, possibly boring
Sock Puppets
Pros: Doable in-house, creative and engaging, multiple characters possible for a conversation rather than 1 actor
Cons: Does not fit the corporate theme/feel of the site
GoAnimate Cartoon Animations
Pros: Doable in-house or hired creator at $500/min or less, creative and engaging, multiple characters possible for a conversation rather than 1 actor
Cons: Off-limits, as this is being utilized by a subsidiary partner site that we need to differentiate from
Slideshow Video
Pros: Doable in-house, no actors required
Cons: Possibly boring, only suitable for certain topics
Does anyone have any additional ideas to throw out there or comments on how to implement the above in a suitable way for this corporate site?

RE: Why is an error page showing when searching our website using Google "site:" search function?
I'm still seeing an error page at the top of the list with the url of http://www.jwsuretybonds.com:443/
Are there any negative effects of this?
-
RE: Why isn't SEOMoz using Wistia's social sharing feautes?
Thank you both for clarifying!
-
RE: Why isn't SEOMoz using Wistia's social sharing feautes?
If you only share the video, not the page, then where does the FB like point back to? My site or Wistia's?
It might be splitting hairs, but I would imagine having them share the page is more beneficial, as you control everything around the video, including calls-to-action, other recommended videos, etc.
Perhaps I'm misinterpreting this?
-
Why isn't SEOMoz using Wistia's social sharing feautes?
I noticed that SEOMoz does not make use of Wistia's social sharing buttons such as a Facebook Like button.
Is there any disadvantage to using the like button via Wistia rather than copy/pasting it in static HTML?
-
Usability For Video Library
I want to use Wistia for my video CDN for it's obvious SEO/analytics benefits. However, I want to be able to display my videos in the best fashion for usability.
I believe the NY Times did an excellent job in doing this: http://video.nytimes.com/ They have a section for recommended videos, a list of most viewed, etc.
I see that Wistia allows you to create categories, which they call "Projects", but I don't see anything in regards to displaying lists of most viewed or related videos.
I don't want to recreate the wheel and am assuming someone must have coded this already. Is there an open source or perhaps paid license I can obtain to display Wistia videos with the layout I described above?
-
Why is an error page showing when searching our website using Google "site:" search function?
When I search our company website using the Google site search function "site:jwsuretybonds.com", a 400 Bad Request page is at the top of the listed pages.
I had someone else at our company do the same site search and the 400 Bad Request did not appear.
Is there a reason this is happening, and are there any ramifications to it?
