Do 404 Errors hurt SEO ?
-
I recently did a crawl test and it listed over 10,000 pages, but around 282 of them generated 404 errors (bad links)
I'm wondering how much this hurts overall SEO and if its something I should focus on fixing asap ?
Thanks.

As Alan said, you have a ton of old 404 pages with no one linking to them and they're not being indexed in the SERPs, just let them 404 because that's what Google recommends to get rid of them. If you are getting links and traffic for your 404's pages, you definitely want to make it a priority to 301 redirect them. The grunt work is looking at each URL and determining its value.
Two best responses on this issue that I have found so far.
From the Google Webmaster Central Blog: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/search?q=%22404+week%22
Rand Fishkin himself: http://www.seomoz.orgwww.seomoz.org/blog/are-404-pages-always-bad-for-seo

One other point, if you had external links pointing to the missing links, you should 301 then to a relevant page

Just what I was looking for!
Thanks!

Yes and no. having a 404 that the SE finds is not going to hurt you, it will eventualy remove it from its index, but if you have a broken link pointing to a 404 then yes you are leaking PR. Seeing you did a scan, that usely follow links, i think you must have the later.

Is a 404, then a meta refresh 301 to the home page OK for SEO?
Hi Mozzers I have a client that had a lot of soft 404s that we wanted to tidy up. Basically everything was going to the homepage. I recommended they implement proper 404s with a custom 404 page, and 301 any that really should be redirected to another page. What they have actually done is implemented a 404 (without the custom 404 page) and then after a short delay 301 redirected to the homepage. I understand why they want to do this as they don't want to lose the traffic, but is this a problem with SEO and the index? Or will Google treat as a hard 404 anyway? Many thanks

Is hidden content bad for SEO?
I am using this plugin to enable Facebook comments on my blog:

Wordpress Blogs and SEO
So far we have been creating separate blogs on wordpress.com for our sites, and writing there. Today I was told that there was better SEO hosting the blog on the actual domain. i.e. www.widgets.com/blog instead of widget.wordpress.com Is this true? Oddly I have had my WP beat my own URL on one account. So I am not sure if this is valid. Can someone tell me pros and cons of both? Thanks!

Pagination & SEO
I have the WP-Pagination plugin and I am wondering how to handle duplicate content issues and what's best for SEO. My developer initially downloaded the plugin to speed up loading for the home page. Now my home page has 21 pages of paginated content. But the pagination continues with each of my categories as well. Should I be placing a canonical reference to my home page, or category main page? My site name is gracessweetlife (dot) com

301 or 404?
My client has a classified ads website with hundreds of thousands of classified ads. These ads expire quite fast. When the ad expires it gets removed. At the moment this results in a 404 page and thus hundreds of thousands of 404 erros in Webmasters Tools. From what I know this damages SERP results due to slow indexing of important sites and 404 being just plain bad SEO. I suggested doing a 301 from the expired ads to a upper category but this feels like cheating. The content hasn't actually moved, it has been removed. What would you suggest?
