If a page isn't linked to or directly sumitted to a search engine can it get indexed?
-
Hey Guys,
I'm curious if there are ways a page can get indexed even if the page isn't linked to or hasn't been submitted to a search engine.
To my knowledge the following page on our website is not linked to and we definitely didn't submit it to Google - but it's currently indexed:
<cite>takelessons.com/admin.php/adminJobPosition/corp</cite>
Anyone have any ideas as to why or how this could have happened? Hopefully I'm missing something obvious
Thanks,
Jon

You're welcome Jon.
That's a good question. I don't know the official answer on that one, though suspect that Google does check to see if the page exists, mainly because often it will be a valid URL that somebody types in the search box instead of the address bar. If Google don't have that page in their index, they'd at least like to consider adding it.
http://www.google.com/addurl.html is the URL adding page for Google as you'll already know. As well as Google relying on people to use this form, they will also, I suspect, crawl URLs that are entered into a search box. Makes sense to me that Google would at least visit these pages searched on, though can't be sure.

Simon

Thanks for the responses guys!
Are either of you aware of whether or not Google would ever index a page if someone searched for it? For example, say someone did a Google search for the URL I specified above. Would Google ever get curious and then try and crawl it?
Thanks again for taking the time to help out

Hey there Jon.
It seems that it was last indexed almost a month ago on Oct. 21, 2011. I would suggest that you follow Simon's advice on the NoFollow tag.
Additionally, check your GWT to ensure that it is not indexed...If it is, then try to resubmit it to get indexed (I know, I know, it doesn't make sense), but it will send out a message to crawl it. NoFollow, NoIndex tells the spider NOT HERE....Anywho, good luck with that and let us know how it turned out!
Cheers!
P.S. At least it's not indexed in Bing

Hi Jon
This is a strange one, I too haven't found a link to your admin page. There could have been one at some point in the past. Google's bot is rather clever at finding pages on the so-called 'invisible web', so best to request non-indexing of pages that you don't want indexed (covered below).
You're right in thinking that search bots follow links to find and index pages, whether it be an external or internal site link or a sitemap link. They also find pages through actual submissions.
- I'd suggest modifying the Robots tag on your admin page, include a 'NoIndex' just before the NoFollow'.
- Also include a Disallow command in your Robots.txt file for this admin page, and perhaps all pages within the admin section.
- Then, request the URL be removed from Google's index via Google Webmaster Tools ("Site configuration", "Crawler access", "Remove URL").
Hope that helps,
Regards
Simon

My 'complete guide' is cannibalising my main product page and hurting rankings
Hi everyone, I have a main page for my blepharoplasty surgical product that I want to rank. It's a pretty in-depth summary for patients to read all about the treatment and look at before and after pictures and there's calls to action in there. It works great and is getting lots of conversions. But I also have a 'complete guide' PDF which is for patients who are really interested in discovering all the technicalities of their eye-lift procedure including medical research, clinical stuff and risks. Now my main page is at position 4 and the complete guide is right below it in 5. So I tried to consolidate by adding the complete guide as a download on the main page. I've looked into rel canonical but don't think it's appropriate here as they are not technically 'duplicates' because they serve different purposes. Then I thought of adding a meta noindex but was not sure whether this was the right thing to do either. My report doesn't get any clicks from the serps, people visit it from the main page. I saw in Wordpress that there's options for the link, one says 'link to media file', 'custom URL' and 'attachment'. I've got the custom URL selected at the moment. There's also a box for 'link rel' which i figure is where I'd put the noindex. If that's the right thing to do, what should go in that box? Thanks.

Need Help On Proper Steps to Take To De-Index Our Search Results Pages
So, I have finally decided to remove our Search Results pages from Google. This is a big dealio, but our traffic has consistently been declining since 2012 and it's the only thing I can think of. So, the reason they got indexed is back in 2012, we put linked tags on our product pages, but they linked to our search results pages. So, over time we had hundreds of thousands of search results pages indexed. By tag pages I mean: Keywords: Kittens, Doggies, Monkeys, Dog-Monkeys, Kitten-Doggies Each of these would be linked to our search results pages, i.e. http://oursite.com/Search.html?text=Kitten-Doggies So, I really think these pages being indexed are causing much of our traffic problems as there are many more Search Pages indexed than actual product pages. So, my question is... Should I go ahead and remove the links/tags on the product pages first? OR... If I remove those, will Google then not be able to re-crawl all of the search results pages that it has indexed? Or, if those links are gone will it notice that they are gone, and therefore remove the search results pages they were previously pointing to? So, Should I remove the links/tags from the product page (or at least decrease them down to the top 8 or so) as well as add the no-follow no-index to all the Search Results pages at the same time? OR, should I first no-index, no-follow ALL the search results pages and leave those tags on the product pages there to give Google a chance to go back and follow those tags to all of the Search Results pages so that it can get to all of those Search Results pages in order to noindex,. no follow them? Otherwise will Google not be able find these pages? Can someone comment on what might be the best, safest, or fastest route? Thanks so much for any help you might offer me!! Craig So, I wanted to see if you have a suggestion on the best way to handle it? Should I remove the links/tags from the product page (or at least decrease them down to the top 8 or so) as well as add the no-follow no-index to all the Search Results pages at the same time? OR, should I first no-index, no-follow ALL the search results pages and leave those tags on the product pages there to give Google a chance to go back and follow those tags to all of the Search Results pages so that it can get to all of those Search Results pages in order to noindex,. no follow them? Does this content get indexed?
A lot of content on this site is displayed in pop up pages. Eg. Visit the Title page http://www.landgate.wa.gov.au/corporate.nsf/web/Certificate+of+Title To access the sample report or fee details, the info is shown in a pop up page with a strange url. Example: http://www.landgate.wa.gov.au/corporate.nsf/web/Certificate+of+Title+-+Fee+Details I can't see any of these pages being indexed in Google or other search engines when I do a site search: http://www.landgate.wa.gov.au/corporate.nsf/web/Certificate+of+Title+-+Fee+Details Is there a way to get this content indexed besides telling the client to restructure this content?

Do pages that are in Googles supplemental index pass link juice?
I was just wondering if a page has been booted into the supplemental index for being a duplicate for example (or for any other reason), does this page pass link juice or not?

My urls changed with new CMS now search engines see pages as 302s what do I do?
We recently changed our CMS from php to .NET. The old CMS did not allow for folder structure in urls so every url was www.mydomain/name-of-page. In the new CMS we either have to have .aspx at the end of the url or a /. We opted for the /, but now my page rank is dead and Google webmaster tools says my existing links are now going through an intermediary page. Everything resolves to the right place, but looks like spiders see our new pages as being 302 redirected. Example of what's happening. Old page: www.mydomain/name-of-page New page: www.mydomain/name-of-page/ What should I do? Should I go in and 301 redirect the old pages? Will this get cleared up by itself in time?
