Mobile sites! Any advice or suggestions for building one?
-
Hello Mozland,
I'm looking to have a mobile site built. We have a fair amount of traffic coming from smart phones, tablets etc and want to capture this traffic better.
Do you have any advice on how to have it built properly, if/how it can be optimised, what good features to include, or anything else you think might be of help?
Many thanks
Martin

Using media selectors you do not need to have a separate mobile site on a different domain, nor do you have to use a redirect. Instead it resizes your corporate site based on the users screen resolution.
For example, here is my portfolio site (not anywhere close to being done). However, it uses HTML5 and CSS3 to resize based on the size of the browser screen. So try slowly resizing your browser when viewing it and you will see what i am talking about.
The SEO benefits of this are:
- No duplicate content since it uses the same page
- You link splitting since there are not multiple domains or subdomains of content
So instead of creating a new mobile site, you would make updates to your current corporate site.
edit: It is also important to mention that only current browsers can render CSS3 so anything before IE9 or early versions of Chrome or Firefox will simply display the website in its full version. Any newer browsers (especially smartphones) will render CSS3 hence giving the graceful degradation to the users!

Ok, so I'm not tech savy, and as I mentioned, I don't think my developers know about this either.
So, if I want a .mobi site built, this'll be completely separate to the .co.uk full site, right? How do the redirects work to a .mobi site when viewed on a smart phone or tablet, how is it that this'll be the site that's returned in searches to be viewed in those platforms as opposed to the full site?

Alan is spot on with the CSS3 reference to media selectors! Try to search around on "responsive design" there are some great articles on how to have your website respond to the user without having to create multiple site for each experience. This approach wil also benefit you since you won't have to have your mobile site on a different domain or sub-domain and you will have no worries with duplicate content.

i dont think too many people have, i made that test for when someone asks

Thanks Alan,
I will pass this on to the developers (who don't seem to have built a .mobi site before).

I have made a test site, i used CSS, where you can have one set of css for screens less that a certain width, and 1 for wider pages. you will also need the metat tag below that will set your page to the correct width for each phone.
So when a mobile comes to the page, its sets a width lets say 320px, then your css will take over (note: set to <850)
you can then set a layout for the small screen, this way you can have 2 layouts in the sdame page, and keep the rank, rather then having one page for browsers and one for mobiles
if you want to see it work, try this link, it is a simple example, and i have not tested it on a phone, (I am one of the few poeple in the world that does not have a mobile phone) http://news.thatsit.net.au/
.myclass{ for the main page }
@media only screen and (max-width: 850px)
{.myClass{ for the mobile page}
}

Duplicate Content Issue: Mobile vs. Desktop View
Setting aside my personal issue with Google's favoritism for Responsive websites, which I believe doesn't always provide the best user experience, I have a question regarding duplicate content... I created a section of a Wordpress web page (using Visual Composer) that shows differently on mobile than it does on desktop view. This section has the same content for both views, but is formatted differently to give a better user experience on mobile devices. I did this by creating two different text elements, formatted differently, but containing the same content. The problem is that both sections appear in the source code of the page. According to Google, does that mean I have duplicate content on this page?

What To Do When Improved Site Speed & Layout Result In Higher Bounce Rates & Lower Time On Site
We launched a new Bootstrap 3.0 site template 2 weeks ago. The site loads 5x faster and has a much improved layout (utilizing most common above the fold recommendations ). It's only been two weeks, but our bounce rate has increased 5-10% and our avg time on site decreased by 10-18%. Here is the page for one of our most common products so you can see the general experience: <a>http://www.jwsuretybonds.com/surety-bonds/commercial-bonds/auto_dealer_bond.htm</a> (here is the old version: <a>http://199.119.123.134/surety-bonds/commercial-bonds/auto_dealer_bond.htm</a>) We spent two months implementing the new design and working on a speedy load time. We had anticipated a drastic improvement, not mild downturn in user behavior. I'm hopeful that the Analytics metrics aren't showing the true picture on the keywords we care about (can't see anymore due to "Not Provided" listed as most keywords now. Argh!) and perhaps some of the more important/accurate user behavior metrics that we can't see are improving. We know our industry and our clients needs VERY well. We THOUGHT our new content/layout was perfect so it will be tough for us to try to make improvements at this point. We believe our best plan of action now is to add more content on each page and A/B test it along with other subtle changes. The problem is that our new content is very concise and hits on all of the primary visitor intentions, so additions of content could be redundant and making concise answers more "fluffy", which is what we tried to get away from. What do you think? Is there reason for panic? What would your plan of attack be if your "sure shot" new design didn't provide the improvements you "knew" it would? 🙂

How to correct error in customized posttype WP site
Hi folks Can anybody help me. I foolishly, dogedly followed a Lynda.com tutorial for developing an 'online portfolio in WP'. Little did I know that my initial assumption - to use the 'twenty twelve' rather than the 'twenty eleven' theme would land me in such deep water. I was attempting to learn php on my own. All went well, until, --- the index page for the customized post type. Now I have two beautiful customized posttypes, 'companies' 'coverage' and no idea how to create an index page for either. I can't do the next step! I have tried every permutation - changing the permalink settings, changing them back, desperately searching for any handle to the nebulous links within the menu section. The only thing I can do (and have done for now) is to link the menu item 'company' and the menu item 'coverage' to a single post. Then the poor visitor has to scroll through the posts individually. I tried contacting the tutor and Lynda.com, to no avail! I have searched forums and found this is a common problem, but because I am so confused and novice to php they might as well be speaking Chinese. To compound my problems, looking through 'Wordpress SEO' for Yoast, I am painfully aware I can't go to the first basic step and fix the peramilinks to 'Postname' as that just makes my flakey menu collapse like a pack of cards. Help!

Image sliders & site speed
We are having a new website designed using WordPress and the Genesis framework. We wanted to include header image sliders on a number of internal site pages, but our designer says that sliders on more than just the home page will slow down the site significantly. How much could they slow down the site, and what can be done to minimize their effect on site speed?

Site redesign and links?
I have a real estate website. On my sidebar I have about 16 links to pages on various neighborhoods. I templated my site using dream weaver so the same sidebar and links are on every page. I'm thinking of redesigning the sidebar and having one link that will take visitors to a page where all the neighborhood links will be and then from there visitors can choose whichever link to go to a specific neighborhood info page. I am doing this to clear space on my side bar for other content and links. What impact would this have on my home page? The website is bronxpad.com if anyone wants to check it out and provide feedback.

Testing your code and site
I’ve got various WordPress websites with the Share This social plugin for WordPress. I have been using Firebug and http://analyze.websiteoptimization.com/wso to do general checks on the site and the code. And used W3C validator too. Due to the way WordPress appears to work we never seem to be able to get all the firebug/ website optimization tests to pass and the W3C validator passes everything on HTML 5 apart from 7 errors with the Share This social plugin. How do you test your code/websites? Should I stop be a perfectionist and just be happy?
