Was moving up in SERPS then Got Stuck on Page 2

Hi,
I was continuously acquiring quality back-links and my site was moving up in Google SERPS for 3 main keywords. Within a few weeks i was on Page 2 and 3 for these three keywords, but after reaching there I got stuck on these pages and positions despite no change in link building strategy / pattern. I have even increased the number and quality of links that I acquire per day, but I am still stuck at exact same positions.
The website is10 months old and related to a software niche. I update this website once a week.
For one keyword I am stuck at position 1 of page two (you can well imagine the frustration..!!).
My question is that what do I need to do to get out of this "SERP lock"?

Yes EGOL, It looks like I need to do the Jolt (rate of change of acceleration) rather than just acceleration or speed as I am up against entities having $10b+ market cap(s). These guys love to mop the serp floor using small competition.
Are there any other factors you guys consider relevant in off-page SEO, in addition to rate of increase of links/day and quality/relevance of links?

Hi,
This is a great question and many people find themselves right where you are. Both Ryan and Egol have provided you some great responses and I agree with them both. There is a lot that goes into whether and when your site will move up or down. Personally, I feel the closer you get to page 1 the more fine tuning and possibly effort it will take to make the leap to the top of page one.

Did you take physics in high school or college?
Your question is similar to..... "What is the difference between speed and acceleration?"
Just because you are "continuously acquiring quality back-links" doesn't mean that your competitors are sitting on their butts.
If you are gaining ten links per day but the guy above you is gaining twenty you will never ever catch him....
.... and if he is on the third page then the guys near the top of page two might be gaining hundreds per day.
Every time you move up a position in the SERPs the website directly above you will require a greater level of effort to defeat.
That means you gotta press the accelerator down harder and harder as you move up the SERPs. Will you have it floored before you reach the top of page two?
In lightly competitive SERPs you might be able to defeat everyone... but when you get into the heavyweight SERPs the increasing competition will at some point be more than most people can muster.
That's where you hit "SERP lock" as you call it.
Keep in mind that the people behind you are working hard too..... you might tramp the pedal to the floor and see people from behind passing you buy.
My personal opinion is... more people who hold any SERPs today will be lower in the rankings than will be more highly ranked by this time next year. Really. They are going to be displaced by existing heavyweights who are expanding their reach and new heavyweights who are starting to accelerate.
Pick ten SERPs in different niches that interest you and record who is in position #5. Then come back in a year and look for them. More will go down than up.

Without looking at the site and the keywords involved, we can only offer generic advice.
I would suggest examining all aspects of your onpage factors. Some specifics are:

page title: focus a single keyword

header: focus the same keyword
-
content: the first sentence of your content should also focus the same keyword
-
site internal linking: when appropriate, other pages of your site should provide links in content to other relevant pages.

url: clean, friendly, static urls which offer appropriate use of keywords is helpful
Wikipedia is a great example for many of the above steps.
There are other items to check. My point is link building and site promotion is an ongoing process which happens over months and years. On page changes have the ability to instantly and dramatically change your ranking. There is a good chance you are stuck due to onpage factors.

Hello, I have a product page and just did a little introduction ( 5 lines of text) but I have the feeling this is not enough for google. What is the solution ? Is it to increase the amount of content even though it is not going to be user friendly ? How would you handle these pages? Should they be indexed?
If a site has about 100 pages offering specific discounts for employees at various companies, for example... mysite.com/discounts/target mysite.com/discounts/kohls mysite.com/discounts/jcpenney and all these pages are nearly 100% duplicates, how would you handle them? My recommendation to my client was to use noindex, follow. These pages tend to receive backlinks from the actual companies receiving the discounts, so obviously they are valuable from a linking standpoint. But say the content is nearly identical between each page; should they be indexed? Is there any value for someone at Kohl's, for example, to be able to find this landing page in the search results? 301ing Pages & Moving Content To Many Other Domains
Recently started working with a large site that, for reasons way beyond organic search, wants to forward internal pages to a variety of external sites. Some of these external sites that would receive the content from the old site are owned, admin'd and/or hosted by the old site, most are not. All of the sites receiving content would be a better topic fit for that content than the original site. The process is not all at once, but gradual over time. No internal links on the old site to the old page or the new site/url would exist post content move and 301ing. The forwarding is mostly to help Google realize the host site of this content is not hosting duplicate content, but is the one true copy. Also, to pick up external links to the old pages for the new host site. It's a little like domain name change, but not really since the old site will continue to exist and the new sites are a variety of new/previously existing sites that may or may not share ownership/admin etc. In most cases, we won't be able to change any external link pointing to the original site and will just be 301ing the old url to the contents new home on another site. Since this is pretty unusual (like I wouldn't get up in the morning and choose to do this for the heck of it), here are my three questions: Is there any organic search risk to the old site or the sites receiving the old content/301 in this maneuver? Will the new sites pick up the link equity benefit on pages that had third party/followed links continuing to point to the old site but resolving via the 301 to this totally different domain? Keywords going to Subdomain instead of targeted page(general landing page)
Why are some of my keywords going to subdomains instead of the more general/targeted landing page. For example, on my ecommerce website, the keyword 'tempurpedic' is directing to the subdomain URL of a specific tempurpedic product page instead of the general landing page. The product has a page authority of 15 and the Tempurpedic landing pages with all the products has an authority of 31. I have also noticed that my 'furniture stores in houston' keyword directs to my "occasional tables" URL! instead of a the much more targeted homepage. Is there something I am missing here?

Embedded mobile page?
I have a client who wants a mobile version of their homepage. Normally, I use responsive design to accomplish this for the SEO benefit, but in this case the client wants very different information on the mobile home page than their regular home page. I don't want to go to a dedicated mobile version of the page because they get a fair amount of mobile traffic and so it would probably have a significant negative impact on their SEO to do so. So I was thinking I would add a hidden div to the home page which includes everything they want on the mobile home page and then use CSS to hide the regular content and show the hidden content if someone reaches the page from a smart phone. What do you think about this idea? Would I run afoul of Google's anti-cloaking "rules"? Has anyone done something like this before? Thanks!

Duplicate Page Title/Content Issues on Product Review Submission Pages
Hi Everyone, I'm very green to SEO. I have a Volusion-based storefront and recently decided to dedicate more time and effort into improving my online presence. Admittedly, I'm mostly a lurker in the Q&A forum but I couldn't find any pre-existing info regarding my situation. It could be out there. But again, I'm a noob... So, in my recent SEOmoz report I noticed that over 1,000 Duplicate Content Errors and Duplicate Page Title Errors have been found since my last crawl. I can see that every error is tied to a product in my inventory - specifically each product page has an option to write a review. It looks like the subsequent page where a visitor can fill out their review is the stem of the problem. All of my products are shown to have the same issue: Duplicate Page Title - Review:New Duplicate Page Content - the form is already partially filled out with the corresponding product My first question - It makes sense that a page containing a submission form would have the same title and content. But why is it being indexed, or crawled (or both for that matter) under every parameter in which it could be accessed (product A, B, C, etc)? My second question (an obvious one) - What can I do to begin to resolve this? As far as I know, I haven't touched this option included in Volusion other than to simply implement it. If I'm missing any key information, please point me in the right direction and I'll respond with any additional relevant information on my end. Many thanks in advance!

Hi guys I have an ecommerce in prestashop (unfortunatelly I can not change it at this moment). I made all main activities both off and on the page. And actually it is working pretty well since I am up on the SERP for all the target keywords. BUT, the page rank still be 0. The site is about 2 years old. Deep Page is Ranking for Main Keyword, But I Want the Home Page to Rank
A deep page is ranking for a competitive and essential keyword, I'd like the home page to rank. The main reasons are probably: This specific page is optimized for just that keyword. Contains keyword in URL I've optimized the home page for this keyword as much as possible without sacrificing the integrity of the home page and the other keywords I need to maintain. My main question is: If I use a 301 redirect on this deep page to the home page, am I risking my current ranking, or will my home page replace it on the SERPs? Thanks so much in advance!
