NEED HELP ASAP: SERVER ISSUE
-
Hey guys,
Some of you may be aware of our story. We have a website about or son who was born with Down syndrome. Two days a go a post I wrote went sort of viral, and I woke up this morning to an email from my host saying they had to take my site down as an emergency because of the amount of resources it is using.
So now my site is down (noahsdad.com.) ...any ideas how to proceeded? I really need to get my site back online asap.
Thank you.

Rick, I've noticed that that page and your site in general has some images that are fairly large in file size that aren't helping matters. One fast fix is to install the Smush.it plugin for Wordpress at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-smushit/. It'll help optimize images as you load them, and will also optimize all existing images in your media library. It's a lossless compression, so the image quality won't change, just the filesize. In the longer term, you might want to consider optimize for web in photoshop for some of your pictures.
Here's a great SEOmoz post about other things you can do to optimize your site. http://www.seomoz.org/blog/optimizing-page-speed-actionable-tips-for-seos-and-web-developers. Some are easy, some will take a while longer. First thing I'd do though is put in smush.it and have it attack what it can on your existing images, since your site is still getting a lot of press.

Hi Rick,
A huge congrats on how successful your post was! I see it just keeps getting more and more press, which is awesome.
What's the status on this question? Have you worked something out with your host or changed hosts? Are you still looking for some advice, or has this been taken care of?

I've had good experience with TigerTech for hosting (they've always been quite responsive, prices are good, and they are easy to use). I've never had a spike like that, but Matt Cutts hosts his blog there and he purposely got on Digg or Slashdot and they were able to handle the spike just fine.
No matter your provider, the next time you see a spike like this happening, give them a call before the server totally melts down. Tell them you've gotten some great press and it's a legit spike but only temporary, and can they make sure that your site doesn't go down.
There is also some Wordpress plugins you can use for caching to help your site through a spike like this.

Just gave it a quickscan, reading it will be something for tonight, but love the pic you used in the post. Sooo cute!

I use site5.com and they 'unlimited' hosting also..but when you get a HUGE spike (I got around 80K views yesterday) they can't handle it on shared hosting they said because it effects all the other sites on the server...which I understand. They put the site up for now..but need to find an alternative asap so this doesn't happen again.

That really is a problem that should be fixed as soon as possible, and it looks like the goodwill of the hosting company isn't very big...
What hosting company are you using at the moment?
I know there are some great ones out there that will even provide you a service that they move your blog to their hosting platform FOR FREE, so the only thing you should do is get an account with this type of hosting company.
I'm pretty happy about the service at Certified Hosting, and they offer packages with unlimited bandwith. I know there are some downsides on the cheaper packages (such as to many sites on same IP) but I really love their fast service and if price isn't an issue you could go for a more expensive hosting package.
Hope you get your site bakc online as soon as possible!!!
-
Talk to the host. You have probably exceeded the bandwidth allowance of the hosting package that you are on. Find out if there is a package with a bigger allowance, explain to them that the increase is probably temporary then start haggling.
Be sure that they are aware of the topic of the site when you haggle. I know that, unless the increase was totally unsustainable, we'd cover the cost of a one off spike like that for an existing client. I bet others would too.

Sounds like you have been topo sucessfull.
I would move hosting, what is the use hosting with them if you are successful they take your site down.

Redirect Chain Issue
I just found I'm having a redirect chain issue for http://ifixappliancesla.com (301 Moved Permanently). According to Moz, "Your page is redirecting to a page that is redirecting to a page that is redirecting to a page... and so on" These are the pages involved: 301 Moved Permanently

http://ifixappliancesla.com
https://ifixappliancesla.com https://www.ifixappliancesla.com/ This is what Yoast support told me: "The redirect adds the https and then the www, ending at: https://www.ifixappliancesla.com/. You want all variants of your site's domain to end up at: https://www.ifixappliancesla.com/ " - which is totally true. But I would also like not to have the redirect chain issue! Could you please give me an advise on how to properly redirect my pages so I don't have that issue anymore?0 -
Indexing Issue
Hi, We have moved one of our domain https://www.mycity4kids.com/ in angular js and after that, i observed the major drop in the number of indexed pages. I crosschecked the coding and other important parameters but didn't find any major issue. What could be the reason behind the drop?

Issue with duplicate content
Hello guys, i have a question about duplicate content. Recently I noticed that MOZ's system reports a lot of duplicate content on one of my sites. I'm a little confused what i should do with that because this content is created automatically. All the duplicate content comes from subdomain of my site where we actually share cool images with people. This subdomain is actually pointing to our Tumblr blog where people re-blog our posts and images a lot. I'm really confused how all this duplicate content is created and what i should do to prevent it. Please tell me whether i need to "noindex", "nofollow" that subdomain or you can suggest something better to resolve that issue. Thank you!

Can a Novice Fix Parallelize Issues?
I was working yesterday on making my WP site quicker (sellingwarnerrobins.com) and after updating the htaccess file to solve some "Leverage Browser Caching" issues I re-ran a scan on Pingdom Tools and am now getting a zero for "Parallelize downloads across hostnames" with a list of 34 items to fix. I did some web searches and when the articles started talking about cnames, subdomains, and hostname distribution it went beyond my capabilities. Are these Parallelize "issues" something a novice like myself can easily fix? If so, how?

Drupal issue
Hi seomozzers again, One of my clients uses DRUPAL(cms) and I have an issue when editing any pages. I access the edit section of the page, try to insert meta description tags, save and view the page source and NO meta description tags appear!! Why is that? Is there a specific setting that I need to implement? Under Meta Tags, apparently DRUPAL likes to put canonical tags by default(unless i can tweek one of the settings), and I would like to remove them. The weird thing is that even there are no canonical tags set, when viewing the page source I can still locate a canonical tag. Is there a setting that allow me to remove the canonical by default? Thank you mozzers:)

How to solve issues regarding canonicalization?
Today, I was searching for article which may help me in issues regarding canonicalization and found very interesting article on SEOmoz. I am facing issues regarding de-indexing of pages and down of organic search engine visits. I have done proper R & D and apply it very carefully. But, still my indexed pages and visits are going down. I have applied canonical tag to following pages. Narrow by search: http://www.vistastores.com/outdoor-umbrellas?manufacturer=California+Umbrella Sorting: http://www.vistastores.com/outdoor-umbrellas?dir=desc&order=position Pagination: http://www.vistastores.com/outdoor-umbrellas?p=2 How can I improve my performance?

Video Sitemaps - Clarification Needed
I'm trying to make sense of video sitemaps so I can get one up and going but the set up seems unclear. We currently have 7 videos created and up on Youtube. I've got them embedded on the site to a "Video" landing page as well as having these product demo videos embedded on appropriate product detail pages. So when setting up the video sitemap it looks like I'll be using the video:player_loctag as opposed to video:content_locbecause I'm not linking to the file itself but rather a page it's hosted on. Correct? Additionally I'm adding the product detail page url here, not Youtube right? Lastly, do I need to insert an autoplay piece on the videos on the product detail page? I feel that would be an annoying user experience.</video:content_loc></video:player_loc> So part of my sitemap might look like this... <video:player_loc allow_embed="yes" autoplay="ap=[?]">http://website/ProductDetailURL</video:player_loc>
