Moved to a New Server IP Address
-
Hi,
I just upgraded everything, a much faster server. I have significantly improved page load times.
I have 2 questions
1. I also upgraded my blog which is a component of the site. I could NOT redirect post-for-post so made single 301 redirect from all pages from the old blog to the root of new blog. I did not care about the old blog, the posts are irrelevant now.
Will the massive redirects be a problem?
2. I had some DNS issues and other problems that took me about 24 hours to fix during the transition. The site is up an fully operational.
Will I be penalized? If so, how long
Thank you,
-
(1) How many 301s are you talking about? As Highland said, you could lose link-juice (especially over time), since the new home-page for the blog won't seem as relevant to the redirected pages. I've heard of issues with 301'ing 1000s of pages, but those wer eusually temporary.
(2) Sometimes, post-Caffeine, Google crawls so fast that a 24-hour outage can cause some problems, but they're almost always temporary. You won't be penalized, per se - you could just see some rankings bounce while Google sorts things out.

There are no limits on how many 301s you have pointing to any page. The only thing that would happen (and you stated that you are not worried about the old posts so it shouldn't matter) is that all of the terms that the old pages ranked for that the new Blog home page is not relevant for will be lost.
As far as the large amount of 301's having a negative effect on ranking for terms that the new blog is relevant for; nothing to worry about.

I mentioned the "Old Posts are Irrelevent".
I am concerned with how google will interpret a lot of 301 to the new blog
-
In that case their PR will flow to the page they are 301ed to and not the new content location. You will have to determine if that is a good thing or bad thing (i.e. do you want people to find your old content in the new location?)
-
The URLS will not return a 404 because they have been 301
-
1. That could be a problem. A 301 tells the bots (and everyone else) that a page has moved and it passes PR along to the new page. Without a 1:1 meticulous redirect your new pages with the old content will likely been seen as new duplicate content for a while. If you're positive this is the path you want to go, be certain that your old URLs return 404 so Google drops them ASAP. You will lose any backlinks to your old pages, however.
2. 24 hours is pretty normal, actually. Most people don't have granular control over the time-to-live of their DNS (which is the best way to handle it). Go run a report on IntoDNS and make sure they give you a clean bill of health. If it's clean, you should have no negative side effects from this.

Multiple robots.txt files on server
Hi! I have previously hired a developer to put up my site and noticed afterwards that he did not know much about SEO. This lead me to starting to learn myself and applying some changes step by step. One of the things I am currently doing is inserting sitemap reference in robots.txt file (which was not there before). But just now when I wanted to upload the file via FTP to my server I found multiple ones - in different sizes - and I dont know what to do with them? Can I remove them? I have downloaded and opened them and they seem to be 2 textfiles and 2 dupplicates. Names: robots.txt (original dupplicate)

Redirecting old domain to new domain with wordpress
Hi all, I need to change domain name to a website published on wordpress. I'd think to make these steps: trasferring the website (files+db) to a new hosting space to redirect old site (www.oldsite.com) to the new one (www.newsite.com) using rewrite rules. With these steps I'd need to transfer and reinstall files and wordpress so I would like to discover if there's some less time expending procedure to consider. Thanks and ciao Bob

When to 301 a No1 ranking site to the new domain?
I have a site [company.com] that ranks number one for the products of my brand but I'm moving all the efforts to a dedicated brand domain. The old site covered a number of small brands and we had no dedicated brand sites, but we now focus on just this one brand and it doesn't belong on the old company domain name. BRAND belongs on the new brand.com Because of the age of the old company site and because it had the first copy about the brand, it's still ranking well for the brand product names, and the new site has some duplicate content issues that I'm in the throws of resolving. RANKS Company.com : number one for all product names Brand.com : nowhere for product brand names but top for the brand name (as I say, the product pages on this site have duplicate content issues which is likely keeping them ranked low - Hades low. I would rather not maintain two websites and I want to give brand.com every bit of available oomph , so should I at some point 301 the old company site to the new one? If so, is now the time? Thanks

Moving Old Site to New
Dear SEO Gurus, I have been working on #2 site for a couple of months and I think it is a good idea to redirect #1 (old site) to #2 (new site) below, yes? What is the most effective way of doing this? Do I have to 301 Redirect one page from the old site to a relevant page on the new site and do this for every page.... or can I do a 301 redirect for the whole old site to the new site? Thank you for your time in advance for helping me out! Sheryl | | 1 | Gazpachos - Restaurnte Y CantinaExplore http://www.gazpachorestaurant.com/ |

Server crashed - What should I do regarding Google SERP´s?
We have several travel websites in Uruguay since 2003. These sites have a very high PR and Trust. The server where all our sites are hosted has crashed and we have been for 2 days now trying to fix all this mess. We hope this problem will be fixed today. Please I really need to know what should I do regarding Google. I mean one of our sites has been ranking in top 1 positions for more than 150 keywords. Will we loose all that? What can we do about it? It´s the first time this has happened to our sites.

Moving Blog to Custom Domain
Hi All - I am currently attempting to move a blog (companyname.blogspot.com) that has a 2/10 GPR to a custom domain name so that I can get my targeted keywords in the domain name. The new domain will just be www.targetedkeyword.com. There are easy instructions for doing this with the A record and CNAME changes in the Blogger help, but I am worried about losing rank and links if I do this. Can you guys help me understand what the ramifications would be, and how I can accomplish this without losing the 2/10 mojo? Thanks!
